Pyongyang completed funeral rights by holding a mass memorial ceremony Thursday. It proclaimed that the era of Kim Jong-il has come to an end, so begins the Kim Jong-un era.

Wearing a black overcoat and looking a little flushed, Kim Jong-un appeared in Kim Il Sung Square. He was accompanied by members of the ruling elite, including vice party chairman Sun Choong Tech and military chief Re Yuung Ho. Tens of thousands of civilians were gathered in the square, and the memorial services begun by Secretary Choi Tae Buck. The president of North Korea's Supreme People's Assembly, Kim Yong-nam, praised Kim Jong-un as the "Supreme Leader."

Kim Jong-un is a supreme leader of our party, our military and civilians who inherit the great comrade Kim Jong-il's ideology, leadership, character, courage and audacity.

The Secretary of the Workers' Party, Kim Kee Num, speaking as a representative of the party, emphasized the new leader, Kim Jong-un, will follow Kim Jong-il's ideology and dignity. Many others, including representatives of the military and youth, spoke. All vowed steadfast loyalty, creating an almost coronation-like atmosphere.
North Korean state television broadcast the funeral and mass memorial ceremony live. The ceremony marked the end of Kim Jong-il's era. Pyongyang will likely announce new policy directions for the Kim Jong-un era in its New Year's message.
