Fighter jets have been used by forces loyal to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad for the first time, as rebel forces struggle to hold on to the gains they made last week in Syria's second city, Aleppo.
As a recent video of a rebel gutting a dead soldier is widely condemned, both sides are accused of extreme brutality.
