Meeting Food Needs - Solutions from Africa
April 12, 2011 from Earth Focus

Danielle Nierenberg, co-director of the Worldwatch Institute's Nourishing the Planet project, traveled to 25 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa to find out what really works in helping meet the food needs of the world's poor. Her insights are part of the Institute's 2011 State of the World Report. She explores farming initiatives in urban slums and looks at simple solutions to prevent waste and spoilage of food. Sithembile Ndeme of FANRPAN (Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network) shows how theater is empowering women farmers and helping get their voices heard in policymaking and business. Edward Mukiibi of Project DISC in Uganda shows how his project to promote school gardens is taking off, changing young people's attitudes toward agriculture and helping nurture a new generation of African farmers.
