A national memorial service is being held at Kim Il Sung Square in Pyongyang to mourn the DPRK late leader Kim Jong-il. The Chinese ambassador to the DPRK attended the ceremonies.

At midday, a three minute nation-wide silence was observed in memory of Kim Jong-il. Earlier, tens of thousands gathered in Pyongyang's Mai Kim Yoon-sung Square for the service. Kim Jong-un, Kim Jong-il's youngest son and successor to the leadership, attended the ceremony alongside senior party officials, during which he was announced at the "Supreme Leader" of the party and people. Chinese authorities expressed profound condolences to the DPRK. Meanwhile, in the Chinese city of Dandong, which borders the DPRK, traffic, bodes and trade all stopped on Thursday in a mark of respect. And DPRK women working in Dandong visited the country's consulate to express their sorrow.
