Yul Kwon:
And last week, a prominent Chinese TV host, Yang Rui, stirred up debate over the issue in China's social media. Yang posted a scathing comment on his Sina Weibo account.
It was translated by many foreign media outlets as the following:
"People who can't find jobs in the US and Europe come to China to grab our money. Foreign spies seek out Chinese girls to mask their espionage. We kicked out that foreign bitch and closed Al Jazeera's Beijing bureau."
The foreigner he was referring to was Al Jazeera's Melissa Chan.
He concluded:
"We should shut up those who demonize China and send them packing."
Later on, Yang backed off somewhat and claimed that he had been mistranslated. He said he meant to refer to Chan as a "foreign shrew", not a "foreign bitch". Still, Yang's rant was a shock to many Chinese netizens.
This Sina Weibo user commented:
"How come such a famous state-television, English-speaking host sounds just like a shrew?"
And in response to the xenophobic comments, this woman addressed Yang by saying:
"It's ok that you're brain damaged, but don't agitate for an isolationist policy."
But others embraced Yang's tweet, bemoaning China's perceived tendency to worship all things western. This Sina Weibo user wrote:
"It's time for a clean-up. Some foreign losers randomly find an English-teaching job making more than 10,000 yuan a month. China is not a garbage dump for this type of white trash!"
However, some Chinese netizens think Beijing authorities should direct their clean-up efforts against other Chinese. This post asks:
"When can you clean up the [domestic] trash that hides the truth, fails to supervise, transfers assets, sends their families to live abroad, and rots in corruption? It seems this kind of trash does more harm than the foreign one!"
