China v. Vatican: Who Should Appoint Chinese Bishops?

Upon his ordination by the Vatican, Chinese bishop Thaddeus Ma Daqin publicly quit the state-sanctioned Catholic Church. The situation has escalated the long-running dispute over the status of China's state-backed church, which rejects papal control. The Vatican also does not recognize the Catholic Patriotic Association, which oversees the church in China. Reports have surfaced that the bishop is now being detained by his seminary.
