As part of his tour in search for a solution to the Syrian crisis, the UN mediator to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, expressed hope that China can play an active role in ending the violence in Syria. This comes following his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minster Yang Jiechi, who said that a political solution is the only way to emerge out of the Syrian crisis stressing that the Syrian people can determine their own country's future. Jiechi added that Syria's sovereignty, stability and the unity of its territory must be respected and protected by all. During his meeting with Syrian Oil Minister Sa'id Hindi in Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi stressed the importance of resolving the Syrian crisis politically. He added that any negative change in Syria will have a negative impact on the entire region, and especially on neighboring countries. After meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Germany, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the international community to assume its role in resolving the Syrian crisis. For her part, Merkel said the current situation in Syria is a true burden on Ankara. According to The Cable of the US Foreign Policy Magazine, leaders of the various Syrian opposition groups will meet next week in Qatar to form a new leadership body in lieu of the Syrian National Council, which many view as 'ineffective' due to internal disputes among its ranks. In another development, the Syrian official TV channel aired statements of one of the officers who deserted his post at the Ministry of Interior but later rejoined the ranks of the regime.

All the Turkish support comes through the Istanbul Council. The Erdogan's government issued instructions to facilitate the process for all Syrians. You can travel without a passport. They wouldn't even ask you for your personal identification card.

The Syrian TV also aired footage of the damage caused to the Armenian-Orthodox Saint Kevork Church and the Bethlehem School in al-Maydan neighborhood in the city of Aleppo. On the ground, a blast rocked the Sayyida Zainab neighborhood in the suburb of Damascus, injuring 13 people. The incident took place when a bomb planted in a trash bin exploded targeting passers-by on a busy street. In another development, warplanes launched airstrikes on various Syrian regions. In the countryside of Damascus, the warplanes conducted air raids targeting fields in the town of Thaqba and Duma in the eastern Ghouta region. In addition, shells fell on the town of Harasta and farms adjacent to the town of Rankus, which is a stronghold of the armed opposition in the countryside of Damascus. In Idlib Province, the city of Maarat al-Numan remains the target of warplanes.</media:text>

In Geneva, UN-Arab League Envoy to Syria Kofi Annan announced he will head to Damascus in the coming days. Annan said there has been a decrease in military activities, but that the level of violence is still unacceptable.

Everyone must understand that we need to guarantee that all aspects of the six-point plan are implemented in order to create an environment that will enable us to launch a political dialogue. It will be very difficult to make progress in the talks if the current situation continues. I told council members that the UN observer mission is possibly the only remaining chance to stabilize the country.

Guest, Male #2
I am not telling you any secrets when I tell you that there are profound concerns that the country could otherwise descend into full civil war, and its implications are quite frightening. And we cannot allow that to happen. I hope that both the government and all the components of the opposition understand this, and seize this fragile but real opportunity to bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, the UN observer team continues to tour Syrian cities and regions. The team said it is planning to send a group of observers to the suburbs of the Syrian capital.

It is essentially going to be a logistical movement. They will start here by going on short tours across areas in the countryside of Damascus, and then they will continue to Homs and other regions.

Meanwhile, opposition members continue their visit to China. The head of the opposition Syrian National Council, Burhan Ghalioun, met with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi. Jiechi told the Syrian delegation that his country adopts a firm position on Syria, and it will support any resolution that serves the fundamental interests of the Syrian people and is accepted by all concerned parties. The Chinese foreign minister urged all Syrian sides to fully implement the ceasefire and cooperate with the UN observers to create an appropriate environment that will help end the violence and start a political dialogue.

On the ground, several cities, notably Homs, witnessed demonstrations called for by the opposition, as fighting continues to rage in some regions. Activists said security forces have killed at least ten people. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the number of people killed in Syria by the violence has reached 12,000, and the number of detainees has reached 25,000. The international committee of the Red Cross and the Arab League warned the conflict in Syria may turn into a civil war.</media:text>

NATO warplanes launched over 20 air strikes today on targets in the Libyan capital Tripoli in one of the most violent strikes that NATO has launched during the daytime. Buildings in the city shook as fighter jets hovered at low altitude and bombed the Libyan government's headquarters and military organizations subordinate to the Republican Guard. On the other hand, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's special envoy to Benghazi Mikhail Margelov held talks with leaders of the Transitional National Council. Upon his arrival to Benghazi, he announced that Russia was ready to mediate between the revolutionaries and Gaddafi in order to find a political solution to their ongoing conflict.

Reporter, Male #1
For the first time since NATO's military intervention began in Libya, the international forces launched over ten air strikes during the daytime on areas close to Bab al-Aziziya complex, the headquarters of Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi. Fierce battles continue on the frontlines between the armed opposition and Gaddafi's battalions. Opposition forces say they are advancing west toward the capital Tripoli and they have achieved military gains on the ground. This development on the ground was reflected diplomatically. China, which abstained from voting on the international resolution authorizing military intervention in Libya, sent a delegation to Benghazi for the first time since the crisis began in Libya. It also announced the Libyan foreign minister's visit to Beijing on behalf of Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi's regime.

Guest, Male #1
Libyan Foreign Minister Abdul Ati al-Obidi will visit China from June 7 to June 9 as a special envoy from his government. During his visit, the Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi will meet with him. The two sides will exchange opinions on the current situation in Libya to find a political solution to the crisis.

Reporter, Male #1
However, so far China has insisted on its official neutral position on the current conflicts in Libya. China's move coincided with Russia sending a special envoy from Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to Benghazi to mediate and find a political solution to the ongoing conflicts in Libya. Even though the two countries are still holding on to their neutral stances regarding the conflicts in Libya, Beijing and Moscow's diplomatic moves may indicate their realization that Gaddafi's departure is closer to becoming a reality. They may be preparing for the era after the Libyan leader, which may be decided by NATO's air strikes and the ongoing battles on the frontlines. Abdul Qadir Balhaj, BBC.
