Yemeni youths have gathered outside the US embassy in Sana'a to protest against what they call the US intervention in the country's internal affairs. The protestors demand the expulsion of the US ambassador from their country. They're angry at the US and Saudi Arabia for trying to keep officials linked to former dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh in power.

Yemeni protestors burning the flag of the United States and an effigy of US ambassador Gerald Michael Feierstein; scenes like this are becoming all too familiar in a country hit by months of pro-democracy protests. The demonstrators accuse Washington of interference in Yemen's internal affairs, and want the US ambassador out of their country. They are angry at the United States and its ally Saudi Arabia for trying to preserve the status quo in the absence of longtime dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh. Washington and Riyadh pushed for a transition deal that ousted Saleh after almost a year of uprising against his dictatorial rule. But the power was transferred to Saleh's deputy, the UK-trained army field marshal Abd Rabbu Mansur Hadi in a single-candidate election.

Many observers have slammed the vote as a political theater, which keeps the existing regime almost intact. While al-Hadi takes the helm as the head of state, many key officials remain to be Saleh's family members. His half-brother, Major-General Mohammed Saleh, holds the position of the commander of the Air Force. Saleh's son Ahmed is the chief commander of the Republican Guard, while the former ruler's cousin and nephews also hold top posts in the military. This has raised criticisms that the slight change in the ruling administration hardly addresses the aspirations of Yemenis for justice and a fundamental change in the political life of their country, following more than three decades of Saleh's iron-fisted rule. Yemenis want Saleh and his allies to stand trial for involvement in the killing of nearly 2,000 people in the brutal crackdown on demonstrations, something the US-backed deal has made impossible by granting immunity from prosecution to Saleh and his closest aides.

The Houthis refuted a statement issued by the US ambassador to Sanaa, Gerald Feierstein, who confirmed meeting with Houthi representatives and receiving assurances that they will participate in the early presidential elections. Feierstein was interviewed Thursday night by the Yemeni state television. The Houthis announced they have reached a truce with armed fighters loyal to the Reform Party and Wahabi groups in Hajjah Province. Meanwhile, massive demonstrations broke out in Saada in rejection of presidential elections.

Appearing on Yemeni state television, the US ambassador to Sanaa issued provocative statements in a bid to prevent Yemen's revolutionaries from achieving their objectives, which the US and its Saudi ally are seeking to undermine by implementing the Riyadh Agreement that grants immunity to President Saleh. The US ambassador's remarks, which stirred public outrage, come as part of US intervention in the country. Feierstein said that Washington is exerting tremendous efforts to restructure the Yemeni army and reorganize its ranks, especially in light of recent waves of defections among its divisions. In an attempt to grant false legitimacy to the presidential elections, the US ambassador said he met with Houthi representatives and received a positive response regarding the upcoming elections. It seems the ambassador is trying to embarrass the Houthis or distort their image by claiming they are in contact with Americans. In response, the Houthis quickly dismissed the US ambassador's allegations. In a statement issued by the Houthis' Media Office, the group's leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi denied holding a meeting or reaching an agreement with the US ambassador, adding that such behavior undermines the country's sovereignty and independence. Al-Houthi further said that such claims are part of political propaganda and a fabricated act of deception aimed at implementing the US plan. The statement also stressed the importance of boycotting the elections, which it described as "illegitimate and predetermined." In response to the US ambassador's claims about Iranian intervention in Yemeni affairs, the Houthis described it as "strange and shocking."

This is another message the Houthis sent the US ambassador in a bid to affirm their national position, as well as to reject foreign intervention in the country's affairs. Tens of thousands of Yemenis demonstrated in the country's northern province of Saada. The protesters rejected early elections, in which Abed Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who is the sole candidate, is running for president. The Houthis remain an integral part of the country's political equation, and that is causing concern for the Saudi regime that is seeking to weaken them by distracting them with fighting the Reform party and Wahabi groups. However, the latest developments confirm that both sides have indeed reached a truce in the country's northern province of Hajjah, following fierce battles. The deal calls on both sides to commit to a ceasefire, reopen all roads, refrain from using weapons or accuse others of apostasy, recognize one another, and work to end the stalemate in the region. The deal also calls on armed groups to return to their regions. The Houthis said earlier they have expelled all Saudi-backed armed groups and seized their Saudi-originated weapons from the area of Aham in the Hajjah Province.</media:text>

Washington called on the Yemeni authorities to practice self-restraint in confronting the Yemeni protestors. Meanwhile, US authorities said they are considering the request submitted by outgoing Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to enter the United States.

Reporter, Female #2
There are conflicting reports about outgoing Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh's request for a visa to enter the United States after the implementation of the Gulf initiative to end the crisis in Yemen. The United States denied reports indicating Saleh has been granted a visa for medical treatment. A spokesman for the White House said the officials are still considering Saleh's request to enter the US for medical treatment only, but that no final decision has been made on the subject. The official denial of the matter comes after the New York Times quoted an anonymous official in the US administration saying Saleh would be granted a visa to enter the US after an extended discussion on Saleh's request within the administration. Amid these reports, Yemeni state TV aired a meeting between President Saleh, a ministerial committee, and members of a popular committee to accelerate the implementation of the Gulf Cooperation Council's initiative for a power transition. Saleh headed the meeting during which he repeatedly discussed the current situation in the country. On the ground, gunmen wearing civilian clothes opened fire on a sit-in organized by officers and soldiers of the Yemeni Armed Forces' Moral Guidance Department. The protestors demanded the ouster of the chief of the Moral Guidance Department over allegations of what they referred to as "financial and administrative corruption." In turn, Saleh's supporters organized a demonstration against what they considered the opposition parties' attempts to outmaneuver the Gulf initiative. However, sources from the Yemeni opposition described this demonstration as a move towards escalation to hinder the implementation of the initiative. In addition, Sanaa, Taiz, Ibb, al-Dalea and other Yemeni cities witnessed angry protests condemning statements by the American ambassador to Yemen. The ambassador described the March of Life, which was organized by the opposition and demanded the trial of Saleh, as a non-peaceful demonstration. </media:text>
