<strong>WARNING: Graphic Content. </strong>A distraught man carrying a wounded child through rubble and shouting "innocent children, innocent children" is the opening image on one of several amateur videos posted on a social website. They have been unverified and show Syrian government air strikes reportedly targeting the province of Hama. The number of dead and wounded is not clear. Syrian warplanes and troops mounted a countrywide offensive on Thursday, activists and state media said. Further images captured alleged attacks in Damascus. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said more than one hundred people including women and children were killed in one of Thursday's attacks on a district on the edge of Homs. Aleppo was also a target. Pictures of devastation caused when a rocket slammed into a building in the city were provided by the government-controlled Syrian television. It said there were several casualties and that the explosion was caused by a rocket fired by a "terrorist group" a term the government uses frequently to describe rebels involved in the 22-month-old uprising. <br />

According to a statement by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Syrian warplane carried out a raid today on the neighborhood of Jobar, east of Damascus, indicating it was the first raid by a warplane on the capital. This comes as state media disclosed the assassination of a Syrian Air Force major general. Meanwhile, the Arab League and UN envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, is visiting Beijing in his quest to find a solution to what he described as a crisis that is going from bad to worse.

Reporter, Female #1
Despite the intensified diplomatic moves by the international envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, prospects for a solution to the Syrian crisis remain dim. In his quest to find a solution to a crisis he described as going from bad to worse, Brahimi arrived in the Chinese capital, Beijing, after having visited Moscow. Brahimi had expressed regret over the failure of the Eid al-Adha truce in Syria. However, he confirmed his determination to continue efforts to establish peace. In response to Moscow's call on Syria's neighboring countries to hold a dialogue with the Assad regime, Turkey's foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, said his country will never hold a dialogue with the Syrian regime.

Guest, Male #2 (Ahmet Davutoglu, Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs)
First of all, the Syrian regime must demonstrate its readiness to make peace with its people. If it fails to do so, then it's impossible for the Syrian regime to have any results with other parties.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged the conflicting sides in Syria to stop the violence, confirming that no one is immune from being prosecuted for international crimes. On the ground, and in a new escalation, a Syrian warplane carried out a raid on the Damascus neighborhood of Jobar. It was the first of its kind on the capital, dropping four bombs on a neighborhood adjacent to the town of Zamalka.

Reporter, Female #1
Meanwhile, an official Syrian source announced the killing of a Syrian Air Force major general by the Free Syrian Army. From southern Syria to its north, some neighborhoods of the city of Aleppo witnessed clashes as air raids were renewed on Idlib Province, primarily on the city of Maarat al-Numaan, which is under the control of the Free Syrian Army.

Reporter, Female #1
The raids were accompanied by violent clashes in the vicinity of Wadi al-Daif military camp, located near al-Maara, which opposition fighters have besieged since capturing the city. Syrian activists said that warplanes shelled opposition sites on the outskirts of the city of Homs in an attempt to break the siege imposed by the Free Syrian Army on an army base.

In a related front, Syria's media outlets broadcast images of the two explosions that occurred yesterday in the Syrian capital, Damascus. The two explosions were the result of car bombs. The first exploded in the Jaramana area in the Damascus countryside, killing 11 people and injuring dozens. The second car exploded in the Damascus neighborhood of al-Hajar al-Aswad.</media:text>

The Arab League welcomed the recommendation of the joint envoy to the Syrian crisis, Lakhdar Brahimi, for initiating a truce between Syrian regime forces and the armed opposition in light of the ongoing clashes in several parts of Syria.

Reporter, Female #2
The Arab League's Deputy Secretary-General, Ambassador Ahmad Bin Hilly, welcomed the recommendation of the joint envoy to the Syrian crisis, Lakhdar Brahimi, for initiating a truce between Syrian regime forces and the armed opposition to stop the violence that has been ongoing for 20 months. The deputy secretary-general added that the League's Secretary-General Nabil al-Arabi will meet with Brahimi in Cairo on Wednesday. They will discuss the outcome of his tour to the region, and the negotiations he held with international parties and the recommendations presented to solve the Syrian crisis.

Reporter, Female #2
Brahimi had held talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr, during which they discussed the developments of the Syrian crisis and Brahimi's mission. Egypt said it asked Syria to clarify the circumstances around the killings of three Egyptians, including a leader of an opposition combat group. According to Damascus, they died in battles in Aleppo and Damascus. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry confirmed it sent an urgent memorandum to Damascus demanding clarifications about the killings.

The Syrian Air Force launched its most violent raids on the surroundings of Maarat al-Numaan since opposition gunmen took control of the city last week. Clashes took place near military centers close to the city. The most notable clashes occurred in Wadi al-Daif, the largest camp for regime forces in the area, which gunmen had lately attempted to storm. The Hamidiya camp, south of the city, was shelled by locally-manufactured rockets. Violence reached several parts of Syria. In Aleppo, clashed took place in the two neighborhoods of al-Hamdaniya and al-Maydan. In Homs, regime forces are trying to storm the Khalidiya district and a number of nearby districts that are controlled by the armed opposition, especially in the center of the city.</media:text>

The growing crisis in Syria witnessed another tragic chapter yesterday as reports that over 80 people were killed in Azaz in the countryside of Aleppo in an air raid carried out by Syrian regime forces. These victims were added to the tally reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights that said the death toll in Syria has exceeded 23 thousand since the beginning of the revolution. Nay Ghabra has the details.

Reporter, Male #1
These are not training missions by the Syrian Air Force; rather, this is an air raid that unleashed all its rage here on Azaz in the countryside of Aleppo. The stated targets were members of the Free Syrian Army, or terrorists, as described by the authorities in Damascus. But the majority of the victims were women and children, who rushed out of their homes only to end up buried under the rubble.

Reporter, Male #1
The neighborhood near the Azaz city prison was also razed to the ground, and the mission to find survivors is as difficult as rescuing the injured. There is no way to threat them except through the border crossings with Turkey. Those fortunate enough to have made it there recount horrifying stories of what they witnessed.

Guest, Male #2
We saw MiG 23 fighter jets, or maybe MiG 27, and bombs that weigh 900 kilos that destroyed entire neighborhoods. They didn't destroy a home or two; they didn't kill one person, or targeted members of the Free Army. No, it was a deliberate attack on civilians.

Reporter, Male #1
News of the shelling, as with the victims, are not limited to Azaz. The regime forces hit several neighborhoods, including Salaheddine, as clashes continued between regime forces and the brigades of the opposition. The latest clashes between the two sides were halted after a military convoy was unable to reach the Bab al-Hawa crossing, as rebel fighters were able to destroy the convoy and seize a tank and capture an army captain.

Reporter, Male #1
These fierce confrontations continued in most Syrian cities, from Homs to Idlib in the north, reaching Damascus and its countryside to the south. They are accompanied by reports showing images of a deteriorating humanitarian situation. People rush to come here to get a loaf of bread in a time of war.

Presenter, Female #1
But bread isn't the only thing Syrians need; they also need urgent humanitarian aid. This, according to Valerie Amos, the coordinator for humanitarian affairs at the United Nations, who stressed the need for aid as her visit to Damascus concluded. Amos confirmed that over 2.5 million Syrians are in dire need of aid.

Guest, Female #2 (Valerie Amos, UN Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs)
Violence has become more intense, and all sides must do everything in their power to protect civilians as the humanitarian situation is worsening. When I was here last March, one million people were in need of humanitarian aid, according to our estimates at the time.

Guest, Female #2
But now, with the deterioration of the conflict and its affects on the economy and the standards of living, there are 2.5 million Syrians in need of such assistance, and we are working to update our plans and our request for funds. But the government and opposition must end the conflict and allow humanitarian workers to freely move around the country.</media:text>

        <media:text>Presenter, Female #1
We start with today's most notable development on the Syrian scene, as Jordan granted political asylum to the defected Syrian pilot Hassan Mari, after his MiG-21 fighter jet landed in Mafraq Airport this morning. Syrian TV had announced contact was lost with the warplane during a training mission in Daraa. Activists said this is the first defection of an air force pilot with his plane since the uprising started. For its part, Syrian state news agency SANA said the pilot landed in Jordan by mistake.

Presenter, Female #1
On the ground in Syria, the opposition Syrian Revolution's General Commission said 80 civilians were killed today as a result of the continuous shelling of a number of Syrian cities and towns; most of them died in Daraa and Homs. This comes as the spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross said the committee is cooperating with the Syrian Red Crescent in an attempt to evacuate and help people trapped in a number of neighborhoods in Homs due to the ongoing battles. However, human rights activists expressed fear that the injured could be mistreated if they were to be transferred to areas under the control of the Syrian government.

Reporter, Male #1
The shelling of the city of Homs continues, hindering the evacuation of residents and the injured stranded in the city's neighborhoods. The International Committee of Red Cross announced it has received the approval of the government and the armed opposition to facilitate its mission of evacuating residents and delivering medical supplies.

Reporter, Male #1
However, some information points to the difficulties that may delay the evacuation, such as the number of vehicles that will be allowed to enter, and the sites to which the injured will be transferred. Human rights activists are concerned that the injured could be mistreated if they are transferred to Syrian hospitals.

Guest, Female #2 (Donatella Rovera, Amnesty International Adviser in London)
People who were injured by the security forces, or people injured by firearms of the regime army, either during protests or clashes, when they are transferred to hospitals, they may face the risk of being arrested, and tortured if they are arrested. This happens routinely. I was in Aleppo recently. There were peaceful demonstrations, and the security forces and shabeha opened fire at these protests every day. The injured could not be transferred to hospitals because it would be dangerous for them. So they were treated in field hospitals.

Reporter, Male #1
The situation in Syria is seeing a dangerous escalation. The cities and towns of Homs Province are enduring artillery shelling and ongoing fierce clashes between the opposition and government forces. The opposition said the countryside around Damascus, especially the city of Duma, was subjected to attacks and artillery shelling from government forces.

Reporter, Male #1
In Daraa, opposition activists warned that what they referred to as "massacres" are being committed by the army and security forces in the city of Inkhil, and they also spoke of arrests and executions. Clashes and shelling were also reported in the regions of Hama, Aleppo, and Idlib. The Syrian government did not comment on these reports; however, its media outlets said two people they described as terrorists and four civilians were killed in a bombing carried out with a booby-trapped motorcycle in Aleppo. It also said gunmen targeted a cotton yarn factory in Hama. Wael Hajjar, BBC.</media:text>

The Syrian Revolution's General Commission said security and military forces killed 45 people in Syria, including 30 in Tal Rifaat in the countryside of Aleppo.

Reporter, Male #2
Syria's northern area near the Turkish border was the main platform for military operations and clashes since Monday morning. Tal Rifaat, where dozens of people were killed, witnessed the most violent clashes between the Free Syrian Army and the regime's army. According to activists, it was then shelled and stormed by tanks. The opposition uploaded online images of the town, in which clouds of smoke could be seen rising from the town's neighborhoods. Clashes also erupted along the Syrian-Turkish border crossing in the village of Salama. Six Syrian customs workers and security members were killed at the border crossing that is besieged by fighters from the Free Syrian Army. Eight of the fighters were injured and transferred to Turkey, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The opposition uploaded a video online, saying it shows the Kilis refugee camp in Turkey after getting shelled by Syrian forces, which led to casualties.

Reporter, Male #2
The town of Maree in the countryside of Aleppo was also shelled. A police officer and a policeman were killed in an attack by a group of Free Army members on the Sukkari police station in the city of Aleppo. The Jisr al-Shughur area near the Turkish border witnessed clashes as well. As for Rastan, attempts by the regime's forces to take control of the city continue to fail. The Free Syrian Army in the city is hitting military targets, filming their operations, and uploading the videos online. In the same context, injured Syrians who managed to flee the Idlib region and are receiving treatment in Turkish hospitals asserted they were subjected to shelling by the Syrian Air Force, which has begun assisting the storming and shelling operation in the areas witnessing clashes.

The Syrian Revolution's Local Coordination Committees said regime tanks started massing at about one kilometer from the building of the Syrian cabinet in the capital. It seems that today, one day before the deadline set by the Kofi Annan plan, is witnessing a substantial military escalation, while all sides are holding each other responsible for this escalation. In Syria, over 100 people were reportedly killed across different parts of the country, including 20 killed in the violent artillery shelling of Halfaya in the countryside of Hama. In addition, close to 100 people were injured. In the city of Homs, Assad's brigades showered the Baba Amr neighborhood with a barrage of missiles and rockets.

For 24 days, the city of Homs has been violently shelled, leading to additional deaths and injuries among women, men, and even children. The regime of Bashar al-Assad's killing and destruction machine is still using all warfare means, including missiles, rocket launchers, and artilleries. Activists say the brigades cold-bloodedly carried out a massacre against the residents of the neighborhood of Baba Amr as they were fleeing with their families to nearby villages. 64 men and youths were executed after being stopped by Assad forces at the Nuqaira checkpoint. At the same time, the Baba Fadmor neighborhood is witnessing violent shelling and heavy gunfire; in addition, security forces and the shabeha stormed the area. Commercial and residential areas near the Fad'ouz Roundabout were occupied, as large empty trucks entered the town of al-Giza, coinciding with the deployment of Assad's gangs alongside the main road in al-Mujanzarat.

In the city of al-Rastan, indiscriminate artillery shelling was renewed as Syrian security forces attempted to storm the city from three directions, and the Free Syrian Army exerted efforts to resist them with the various means accessible to the members. Meanwhile, activists uploaded videos of al-Jouri Mosque in Homs being subjected to artillery fire from Assad's brigades. In a notable development, social networking sites circulated a video of an airplane belonging to the Syrian Air Force shelling two villages in Homs. In the countryside of Hama, Assad's brigades stormed the town of al-Khattab under heavy gunfire. The artillery shelling was renewed in the city of Halfaya for the fourth consecutive day.

This comes as the International Committee of the Red Cross announced it entered Hama for the first time in over a month and distributed aid to around 12,000 people. It also delivered food and relief supplies to Homs and Idlib, indicating the Syrian Red Crescent needs better security conditions to distribute supplies. Ma'arat al-Na'aman and Sirmin in Idlib were not spared from the atrocities of the Syrian regime and its shabeha. They endured violent shelling, leading to wide-scale destruction of residential buildings.

Meanwhile, Assad's brigades carried out raid and arrest campaigns in the countryside of Damascus and Dara'a, where violent clashes were reported between the brigades and the Free Syrian Army in the town of Da'el. Alongside these bloody developments on the ground, angry supporters of the Syrian opposition took to the streets of Syrian cities and towns to mark a new mobilization called "the Monday of loyalty for the children of Dara'a". Large protests were held in the capital Damascus, especially in Kfar Sousa; protesters chanted anti-regime slogans and demanded its downfall. A student demonstration was launched from a school in Souq el-Salheya, and was subjected to a violent attack by security forces and the shabeha; a number of students were arrested and injured.</media:text>

A plane crash close to a Yemeni air base that killed both Yemeni and Syrian military personnel has revealed previously unknown cooperation between Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, as both presidents face massive popular uprisings threatening to overthrow their regimes, reports BBC Arabic.

In Yemen, thousands of Yemenis in the cities of Sanaa, Ibb, Taiz, al-Dhalee, and others demanded the UN Security Council refer the case of President Saleh and his high-ranking aides to the International Criminal Court over what they called the ongoing organized killings of peaceful protestors, in addition to what they described as the continuous collective punishment of the Yemeni people. They said the collective punishment is being carried out by cutting off electricity and essential services. The Organizing Committee of the Yemeni Popular Revolution announced its complete rejection to granting President Saleh and his regime's figureheads' immunity from legal prosecution.

These images, broadcast by the government-run television channel, show al-Anad airbase in southern Yemen days after the eruption of the popular uprising at the beginning of the year. The aim was to prove its members' loyalty to President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Near the base, a number of Syrian soldiers were killed alongside their Yemeni counterparts in a military airplane crash, as conflicting reports over the circumstances emerged. Regardless of the various functions of the killed Syrian soldiers, whether they are pilots or technicians, the incident revealed a close cooperation between Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. And undoubtedly, the incident is significant in terms of its type and timing. Initially, it was unknown that the Syrian and Yemeni armies were cooperating since the regimes in Damascus and Sanaa did not share policies or political positions that would warrant such cooperation. As for the incident's timing, it was possible for it to go unnoticed had the Yemeni and Syrian presidents not been facing massive popular uprisings threatening to overthrow their regimes. This is not the first time the Yemeni president has used foreign expertise in his attempt to solve an internal crisis. He previously used the Saudi Air Force to shell sites of his Houthi opponents in northern Yemen at a time when the Yemeni army was still unified and before the current uprising had begun. This makes his call for the expertise of the Syrian Air Force, or any other forces, complex. The uprising facing President Saleh is still at its peak while his trust in several army personnel has been shaken. General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, other leaders, and their core supporters have abandoned him. It is also not the first time the Syrian president has been accused of sending his soldiers to aid an Arab ruler. There were reports about the participation of Syrian pilots, alongside Gaddafi's battalions, in the shelling of the Libyan revolutionaries' sites before NATO's intervention. As for cooperation with Gaddafi, there was no strong evidence to support the allegations but the evidence is clear in the second case.

Of course, it was strange that the Syrian regime was not satisfied with only killing their people so they sent a group of pilots to kill the Yemeni people. I don't know if that's what the Syrian regime is about, killing and more killing. The regime went as far as participating in killings outside Syrian territories in Yemen.

Nonetheless, the defected forces alleged that a Yemeni pilot deliberately brought down the plane to prevent the Syrian soldiers' participation in the country's ongoing struggle. So the question not only relates to the ethics of this participation and timing, but also to whether this cooperation existed before, as well as its scope, and limitations, or if it was Sanaa and Damascus' troubles that united them. Syrian activists confirmed that 47 people have been killed over the past three days by the security forces' gunfire in various cities. Most victims were killed in the city of al-Rastan in Homs Province, which witnessed a series of airstrikes by the Syrian Air Force. In a statement, the al-Harmouch Brigade, which is affiliated with the Syrian Free Army, announced the launch of military operations against members of the security forces and shabeha in Jabal al-Zawiyah. In a notable development, the regime's supporters pelted the US ambassador with stones and tomatoes as he left the office of an opposition leader in Damascus. Following the attack, Syrian authorities accused the US of inciting violence against their security forces. As the protests continue against President Bashar Assad's regime, the Syrian army intensified its security operations across various regions of Homs Province, especially in al-Rastan where clashes are raging with army defectors. The Syrian Revolution General Commission said two explosions rocked the Bayada neighborhood amid heavy gunfire. The commission added that massive explosions were reported on al-Zair Street, also amid heavy gunfire. Other explosions were also reported near al-Abasiyah checkpoint, Deir Ba'alba, and Bab Amr neighborhood. The commission said that security forces and the shabeha fired heavily from the Bab Tadmor checkpoint toward Bab Siba'a and Mouraijah streets, inflicting causalities among residents. The Syrian Revolution Coordination Union said the Syrian army deployed military planes to shell the city of al-Rastan, which has been under attack for days. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that Wednesday's death toll included 14 victims in Homs, two in Daraa, and one in Baniyas. In another development, the Syrian Revolution Coordination Union said that army defectors ambushed a group of shabeha en-route to Jabal al-Zawiyah in Idlib Province, killing dozens.

In response to the heinous attacks on the city of al-Rastan and the crackdowns in Jabal al-Zawiyah, the al-Harmouch Brigade targeted a shabeha bus at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, September 28, 2011. The Jabal al-Zawiyah-bound bus was en-route from the al-Mastuma base near the Jericho Bridge.

In addition, a number of student protests were staged across various Syrian regions, demanding the downfall of the regime and the execution of President Bashar Assad. According to a Syrian news website, the US ambassador to Damascus, Robert Ford, was pelted with tomatoes this morning by dozens of President Assad's supporters in the capital. Syrian Akhbar News online said that a group of youths attacked US Ambassador Ford while en-route to the office of the chair of the National Coordination Committee, attorney Hassan Abdel Azim, in protest of his country's position on the events in Syria.
Following the attack, a Syrian official source accused the US of blatantly inciting the use of violence against the Syrian army by armed groups. According to the official Syrian SANA news agency, the Syrian Foreign Ministry slammed comments by US State Department Deputy Spokesman Mark Toner, who described the quote "terrorist acts" in Syria as "natural.” The source added that such “irresponsible” remarks will encourage acts of terrorism and chaos in order to serve foreign agendas against the interests of the Syrian people. It added that Syria strongly condemns the US statements and affirms its determination to preserve its security and stability, to defend its citizens, and to oppose all attempts to interfere in its internal affairs. Despite the use of violence to quell the protests, Syrians staged nighttime rallies across various regions. In the Damascus' neighborhood of Hamuriya, a protest was held in solidarity with al-Rastan and to demand the downfall of the regime. In Idlib, massive protests were held after evening prayers in support of al-Rastan and to demand international protection for civilians. A nighttime rally was also held in Homs, calling for the unity of the opposition and for the execution of President Assad and his pillars.
