<title>'Blatant Assault on Free Speech': Iranian TV Channels Gagged in Europe</title>

<description>European satellite provider Eutelsat is reportedly pressurizing a Slovenia-based satellite communications company to stop carrying Iran's Arabic-language Al-Alam news network. Press TV, Al-Alam's English-language equivalent, which has been the victim of similar moves in Europe and North America, describes the attempted takedown as &quot;a blatant assault on the freedom of speech.&quot; Eutelsat has threatened the Slovenia-based satellite communications company Satellite Telecommunications Network (STN) with punitive measures if it doesn't remove Al-Alam from its platform within the next 48 hours. On February 20, the Arab satellite provider Gulfsat banned Iranian channels iFilm and Al-Kawthar, also under direct pressure from the Eutelsat, which says it is complying with EU-approved sanctions against Iran. Press TV has conducted an interview with Beirut-based political analyst Kamel Wazni to further discuss the issue. &lt;br /&gt;</description>

        <link>http://news.linktv.org/videos/car-bomb-hits-press-tv-in-syria-as-us-tightens-chokehold-on-iranian-media?start=0</link>
<description>Press TV reports that an explosion in the Syrian capital Damascus destroyed several Press TV and Al-Alam vehicles. Meanwhile, three US senators have introduced a proposal as an amendment to previous unilateral sanctions against Iran. As part of the new proposal, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting and its head will be blacklisted. This comes as European sanctions against Iran have forced Press TV and other Iranian satellite channels off the air in many parts of Europe and the US, and after a Press TV reporter in Damascus was killed by sniper fire in September.</description>

<media:text>Media covering the Syrian unrest continue to be the targets of terrorist attacks. An explosion has destroyed several Press TV vehicles in the Syrian capital Damascus. Videos caught on camera show a man attaching something to a car near Press TV's office in Damascus. He then ran away, and minutes afterward, a bomb exploded, destroying several cars, including a satellite news gathering truck belonging to Press TV and Al-Alam offices. The blast did not cause any casualties. Meanwhile, Syrian security forces say they've dismantled another explosive device planted outside the same offices.

This is not the first time that Press TV has been targeted. On September 26, Press TV correspondent Maya Nasser was killed by sniper fire in an insurgent attack in the capital Damascus that also injured Press TV's Damascus bureau chief Hussein Mortada. In October, European satellite provider Eutelsat SA stopped the broadcast of Press TV and other Iranian satellite channels, citing an order by the European Commission that the Commission later denied. Ofcom, Britain's office of communications, also took Press TV off the air in the UK in October 2011.

Meanwhile, three US senators, Mark Kirk of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey, and Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, have introduced a proposal as an amendment to previous unilateral sanctions against Iran. The senators are claiming that the new move against Tehran is over its nuclear energy program. As part of the new proposal, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting and its head will be blacklisted. Washington would also block all IRIB assets and prevent other companies from doing business with it. If approved, the new proposal would become part of the annual defense policy bill, which must pass through the Senate and House of Representatives before it can become law.</media:text>

<title>Free Speech Fail: Asian Satellite Provider Axes Iranian TV Channels</title>
        <link>http://news.linktv.org/videos/free-speech-fail-asian-satellite-provider-axes-iranian-tv-channels?start=0</link>
<description>Press TV reports that an Asian satellite provider has stopped providing services to Iranian channels, including Press TV. Nearly 37 percent of AsiaSat's shares are owned by the American company General Electric. The network called AsiaSat about the development, but its corporate affairs manager, Winnie Pang, declined to comment. This move comes after two European satellite providers, Intelsat and Eutelsat SA, took 19 Iranian channels off the air in October under pressure from the European Union.&lt;br /&gt;</description>

<media:text>Another satellite provider, this time in East Asia, pulls the plug on Press TV. AsiaSat said it has stopped providing services to all Iranian channels. The Hong Kong-based company says the decision is in line with the US law recently signed by President Barack Obama. According to the new sanctions, American companies are banned from doing business with Iran. In the case of AsiaSat, nearly 37 percent of its shares are owned by the American company General Electric. This is not the first time that satellite have removed Iranian TV channels from the air. Back in April, the Munich regulatory body ordered SCS-Astra to take Press TV off its platform. In October, two European satellite providers, Intelsat and Eutelsat SA, also took 19 Iranian channels off the air, claiming that the move had been under pressure from the EU. But the bloc denied the charges and later ordered the companies to refrain from commenting on the issue.

To find out why AsiaSat pulled the plug, Press TV contacted the satellite communication company. Its corporate affairs manager, Winnie Pang, promised to e-mail a statement to Press TV's newsroom director Hamid-Reza Emadi, but he did not receive any e-mails. They called the company to pursue the matter, where the manager said that the company had no comment on the issues of whether the US had ordered the company to take Iranian channels off the air.</media:text>

<media:text>US legislators are working on another set of new and unprecedented sanctions against Iran that could prevent it from doing business with most of the world until it agrees to international constraints on its nuclear program. The severe bipartisan financial and trade restrictions could, however, put the Obama administration in a difficult position with US allies who continue to do business with Iran, but are much needed by Washington to help secure a peaceful solution to the nuclear standoff. In the first foreign policy announcement since the president's reelection, the White House targeted four Iranian officials and five organizations with punitive measures for jamming satellite broadcasts and blocking Internet access to Iranian citizens. Additional measures under consideration would range from taking aim at Iranian overseas assets to all foreign goods imported into Iran. Earlier measures have already cut Iran's petroleum exports in half and severely impacted its economy.</media:text>

Reuters news agency sources revealed that Royal Dutch Shell Company aims to circumvent international sanctions imposed on Iran by concluding a swap deal through which it would pay its debt to the Iranian national oil company.

Reporter, Female #2
In an attempt to tighten the noose on Iran so it gives up its nuclear program, early this year the European Union added its voice to that of the United States by imposing sanctions on the government of Tehran that include prohibiting the import of Iranian oil. European countries granted their oil companies a 6-month grace period to adhere to the sanctions. During the grace period, these companies worked on gradually decreasing their dependence on Iranian oil. As large companies stopped buying Tehran's oil, sources revealed to Reuters agency that the Royal Dutch Shell company, Tehran's second largest customer that imports 100,000 barrels of Iranian oil per day continued to purchase oil until the sanctions went into effect on July 1st. As the scope of the sanctions was expanded to prohibiting financial transactions with Iranian banks and companies, Shell was unable to pay its dues, amounting to 1.4 billion dollars, to the Iranian national oil company, especially after the British government refused to give the company permission to pay off this debt through bank transfers. These sanctions forced Royal Dutch Shell to look for other means to settle its debt. According to Reuters, the company is currently trying to arrange a grain barter deal through the American agribusiness Cargill. Through this deal, Shell would deliver grains to Iran worth 1.4 billion dollars, or what amounts to nearly 80 percent of Iran's yearly import of grains. Shell hopes the deal receives the approval of the American, British and Dutch authorities since the export of grains, food products and essential supplies to Iran is permitted on humanitarian grounds despite the sanctions.</media:text>

The leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, confirmed that the attempts of the West to subjugate the Iranian population will fail. During a meeting with a number of officials in northeast Iran's province of Khorasan, Ayatollah Khamenei said the Iranian people are stronger than all the games the West is playing, adding that Western claims that Iran abandoned the negotiations is a lie. He said Tehran did not abandon the negotiations, including those regarding its nuclear program. Ayatollah Khamenei warned of getting pulled into the disinformation that is being waged by Zionist institutions that control the Western media.

Iran considered the European sanctions imposed on it as illegal and inhuman, because they target the Iranian people. China also rejected the new embargo, saying it does not help solve the issues, but further complicates them. The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton said she is hoping that intensifying the pressure on Iran will persuade the country to make concessions, and resume negotiations soon.

Reporter, Male #2
The European Union's decision to impose new sanctions on Iran, hitting the banking, maritime shipping, and industrial sectors, under the pretext of its peaceful nuclear program, was confronted by the reactions of Iranian officials. Iran, which has been facing collective forms of sanctions since the victory of its Islamic revolution and before possessing a nuclear program, is still facing unilateral sanctions under the pretext of this program. This renders these sanctions illegal and inhuman, since they target the Iranian population.

Guest, Male #3 (Ramin Mehmanparast, Iranian Deputy Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
Iran presented a package of proposals to the P5+1 group at the Moscow meeting. European nations have regarded it as comprehensive and constructive. We have requested a response to the proposals, but they have yet to provide an answer. Sadly, instead of pursuing negotiations, they reverted to repeating their past mistakes. They think that by applying pressure and using threats, they will accomplish gains during the negotiations. But we invite them to stop these practices and to return to positive negotiations. The opportunity is available to settle the issues in a manner that guarantees our legitimate rights, and removes the doubts of Western nations.

Reporter, Male #2
Iranian officials confirmed that EU sanctions will affect European nations first, saying the policies of the West will not affect the solid Iranian economy. Rather, they will propel Iran to focus on self-sufficiency in all fields, and to push for scientific advancement to fill the shortage in the country.

Guest, Male #4 (Dr. Haidar Borshahrdani, Iranian Parliament National Security Committee Member)
The Iranian economy is very solid, and will not be affected by Western sanctions. We will turn these sanctions into an opportunity to fulfill self-sufficiency in different fields. European citizens and companies will be harmed by these sanctions, especially as the winter is approaching, and they will be deprived from a large portion of Iranian gas.

Reporter, Male #2
China rejected the European sanctions on Iran.

Guest, Male #5 (Hong Lei, China's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson)
We oppose unilateral sanctions against Iran. We think that using sanctions to place pressure cannot solve the Iranian nuclear issue in an essential manner. They could further complicate the issue, and escalate the confrontation. We hope all concerned parties will show flexibility, increase communication, and aim for a new round of negotiations as soon as possible.

In Iran, the rial continues its sharp decline against hard currencies, after the exchange rate recorded the rial's largest loss to the dollar this past week, a loss that accounts for 40 percent of the rial's value. International economists expect a further decline, which Iranian economic experts attribute to the mismanagement of the crisis by their country's authorities. This places a heavy burden on ordinary citizens, who are among the hardest-hit classes. From Tehran, Abdulaziz Yusuf reports.

Reporter, Male #2
Compared to foreign currency, the value of Iran's local currency dropped at a record level the country has never witnessed before. A single dollar now equals 34 thousand rials. Western sanctions on oil and the Iranian Central Bank, as well as the government's mismanagement in dealing with those sanctions, are, in the view of some, the major reasons for this historic decline.

Guest, Male #3 (Mohamed Khosh Chehreh, Economics Professor at Tehran University)
The government didn't deal with the sanctions in a scientific and practical manner. Perhaps this was due to economic ignorance and inattention. Or perhaps it was on purpose, to increase earnings from exports, which are profits that come back to them. And the government apparently doesn't realize that the devaluation of the local currency causes an increase in inflation and unemployment in a big way.

Reporter, Male #2
The rising cost of many foodstuffs and other items was an expected outcome of the drop in the rial's value. The ones primarily affected, and who carry the greater burden, are the ordinary citizens.

Guest, Male #4
We employees and ordinary workers are the most strongly affected by this crisis. The rise in the dollar causes a rise in the price of many goods. I think the government is trying to resolve the current situation, but other authorities aren't assisting the government with that.

Reporter, Male #2
Citizens remain confused, in the absence of a clear plan of action that will bring back confidence in the local currency.

Guest, Female #1
People are starting to fear the situation, and for that reason they're trying to buy anything and everything. I don't know what will happen. I don't know if the government is capable of solving this matter.

Reporter, Male #2
This big challenge is added to the other challenges that face the Iranian government. So the question remains: Will Iran come out of its currency crisis, and return to its citizens their peace of mind, which the past days have erased? A record deterioration in the value of Iran's local currency could increase the scope of unemployment and inflation.

Reporter, Male #2
Everyone is waiting for a government plan to solve the crisis. The arrest of protestors in the exchange market has been the only indicator of a plan on the local level. The details of a government plan on the international level remain restricted and concealed. Abdulaziz Yousef, Dubai TV, Tehran.</media:text>

<media:text>Iran has presented what it calls a &quot;nine-step plan&quot; to diffuse its nuclear crisis with the West. According to the plan, Iran would gradually suspend its production of uranium that could most easily convert into nuclear weapons. Washington quickly dismissed the proposal as &quot;unworkable,&quot; saying that it requires too many early concessions by the West. The suffocating financial crisis that Iran is facing has boiled over into the internal situation there, as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad attempts to dispel accusations of shortcomings by his government, while admitting that international sanctions have affected the Iranian economy.

Reporter, Female #2
The suffocating financial crisis that Iran is facing began to show signs in Iran's internal situation. The pace of objections against the government of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have risen, as a result of its silence on the sharp fluctuation in the currency markets after the Iranian rial hit its lowest level in history against the dollar on the open market. The government's silence in responding to this crisis led many circles to contest the government's performance in confronting the crisis.

Reporter, Female #2
What is prominent in this campaign is the caliber of people contesting the government's performance. Among them is Hussein Shariatmadari, president and editor-in-chief of the Iranian Kayhan newspaper. He criticized the government and the silence of economic authorities in the country, saying that &quot;they put the currency market in the hands of a known mafia,&quot; without clarifying what that mafia is.

Reporter, Female #2
The semi-official Iranian Fars News Agency, which speaks for the Revolutionary Guard, stated that the government remained silent with regard to the currency crisis the country is facing. It questioned whether the silence in this case is a sign of satisfaction with their actions, or whether those responsible for decision-making in the economic arena have been struck with depression and obscurity.

On the other hand, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused the West of waging an economic war on Iran. He denied the presence of a shortage of hard currencies in the Iranian market, and clarified that the Iranian rial was devalued because of international sanctions on Iran.

Reporter, Female #2
In a press conference, Ahmadinejad said that he sees a psychological war accompanying this external international pressure, which led to the devaluation of the currency. He noted that the Central Bank is trying to provide for all the demand for hard currencies, and called for combating violators in the his country's currency market. And as trading began, the exchange rate for Iranian rials to American dollars fell by 2.6 percent. This comes one day after the rate's dramatic decline of 17 percent. The American dollar is currently being sold in Tehran markets for 37,000 rials.</media:text>

Clashes erupted between protestors and police agents in central Tehran, the first indicator of popular unrest against the backdrop of the Iranian currency crisis. Hundreds of riot police officers stormed the neighborhood of al-Fardous, where currency exchange centers are located, arresting a number of unlicensed currency dealers.

Reporter, Female #1
The streets are seething as a result of the economic burden of the rial crisis on Iran. These images are coming out of the capital Tehran, specifically al-Fardousi Street, where the central and main banks are located. Are they a result of the success of Western sanctions on Iran, or merely a passing crisis that the Islamic Republic will succeed in overcoming? This was the question posed by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Reporter, Female #1
Clashes took place between riot police, protestors, and currency dealers, following a campaign in pursuit of unlicensed currency dealers whom the government accuses of creating confusion in the currency market.

Guest, Male #2 (Amir Moussa, Political Analyst and Head of Strategic Studies in Tehran)
There were security procedures that took place this morning, at the request of the Iranian president in a press conference yesterday. He asked the security agencies to put an end to the chaotic economic practice of operating unlicensed centers, which are assuming the role of currency exchange in Iranian markets. They had collected the hard currency over the past three months in an unusual way.

Reporter, Female #1
But the merchants saw this campaign as an abuse of their rights, and held sit-ins in front of their closed stores. Others headed to Fardousi Street, and pelted the main office of the Central Bank of Iran with stones. Police agents responded by firing tear gas to disperse them, and arrested a number of them. Tensions increased after reports of merchants from other cities joining the protests. These developments were reflected in the exchange rate of the rial, which settled at 34 thousand rials to the dollar. This comes with the closure of Tehran's financial market due to the anxiety surrounding the currency.

Reporter, Female #1
There is discussion within political circles of supporting those who oppose Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in these movements. But Ahmadinejad has explained that a psychological war is happening, that everyone must assist the government, and that the West lies when they say that sanctions are putting pressure on the government. The US Congress unanimously approved a draft bill that would tighten the economic and commercial sanctions on Iran. The sanctions aim to punish banks, insurance, and maritime shipping companies that help Iran sell its oil. It is expected for American President Barack Obama to sign the draft bill after Congress voted on it.

An endless series of decisions continue to be taken as part of the American campaign against Iran. Different pretexts are used; the most notable is the attempt to stop Iran's nuclear program.

Reporter, Male #1
The US Congress recently voted on a draft bill that tightens the economic and commercial sanctions on Iran, punishing banks, and insurance and maritime shipping companies that help Iran sell its oil. The new decision comes only two days after the White House announced penalties on foreign banks that have trade ties with Iran.

Reporter, Male #1
American President Barack Obama did not conceal his goal for the sanctions on the Iranian financial, energy, and petrochemical sectors, viewing them as additional pressure on Tehran for what he described as Iran's failure to meet international obligations on its nuclear program. He claimed that Washington is still committed to reaching a diplomatic solution to the confrontation with Tehran, but that it will continue alongside its allies to impose sanctions on Iran due to its nuclear program.

Reporter, Male #1
In the same context, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the Western sanctions will have an impact on Iran, but have not yet had a tangible result on the decision-making in Tehran.

Reporter, Male #1
Panetta pointed that Iran is keen to reach a political solution through negotiations with the P5+1. On the other hand, Tehran confirmed though its leaders that the sanctions will not have any negative impacts on its development. Rather, they will push different sectors in the country to be self-sufficient, notably the oil industry.

The leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, confirmed that Iran is continuing on the path of progress, and sees no closed pathways. He added that the resistance economy is a reality that must be achieved. He stressed that the people are determined to reach the goals despite the political, economic, and media pressures that object to the scientific movement in the country.

In addition, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called for his country to stop exporting crude oil. In a ceremony inaugurating a new oil refinery, he stressed the need to build additional refineries to sell expensive oil products instead of crude oil. Observers say the US is trying to experiment with new pressures in its dealing with Tehran after its recurring failures in previous stages.</media:text>

The semi-official Iranian Student News Agency reported that protestors gathered in the largest square in the city of Nishapur, in northern Iran, to protest the rising price of chicken. Protestors held President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's administration responsible for the increased price of basic commodities in general. Such protests are rare, so they indicate that the impact of Western sanctions on the country is getting worse.

Crowds at a store in Iran are hoping to buy chicken after its price was recently increased to four dollars per kilogram. The increase in the price of chicken that citizens enjoy here has turned into a controversial crisis.

Reporter, Female #1
It reached its peak in the city of Nishapur in the northern part of the country, where many gathered in the city's main square to hold a rare demonstration against the government. And according to the semi-official Iranian Student News Agency, protestors chanted slogans condemning the government. They say the government allowed doubling the price of chicken in the past two months.

Reporter, Female #1
The price of chicken, like that of other basic food supplies, recently witnessed a noticeable hike following the devaluation of the Iranian currency that was caused by international sanctions, which were imposed on Iran because of its nuclear program. Until today, Iranian chicken production has relied on feed supplies from abroad. Observers do not anticipate widespread demonstrations due to the chicken crisis, even though President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is under growing criticism over his economic policy, which has led to an increased rate of inflation. On social networking sites, Iranians are joking about the emergence of a new social gap. The deputy commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards said the military maneuvers conducted by his forces have successfully test-fired missiles by completely destroying mock military bases similar to foreign bases in the region. In another development, a member of the Iranian National Security Committee said his committee has prepared a draft resolution to be voted on soon, entailing the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to oil export tankers bound to EU countries and the US.

Reporter, Male #1
Suddenly and collectively, Iran decided to unleash its missile system, amid the sanctions, oil embargo, and the threats, saying it will never concede its nuclear ambitions. The Revolutionary Guards preemptively responded and successfully identified sources of threats. In the desert, they established mock military bases similar to US bases in the region, and launched a barrage of missiles in an experiment dubbed the &quot;raining of missiles.&quot;

Guest, Male #2 (Hussein Salam, Deputy Commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards)
Militarily, our goal is to test our capability to destroy mock targets similar to military bases in the region by having missiles rain down on them from various distances. Tactically, we want to test-fire our missile system.

Reporter, Male #1
The National Security Committee has openly announced it completed drafting parliamentary legislation to close the Strait of Hormuz in a bid to prevent EU and US-bound oil tankers from crossing. This comes as the Iranian military stepped up its mobilization, which included the testing of the Persian Gulf's anti-ship missile. And it's no coincidence here, where it's no longer forbidden to demand a halt to the talks with the West and to mobilize militarily in the Strait of Hormuz.

Guest, Male #3 (Imad Ihshinash, Editor-in-Chief, Iran's Daily)
Iran is facing many threats, with the latest being the European oil embargo, which was a declaration of war. Unfortunately, some of the Gulf countries support the embargo and seek to replace Iranian oil. A real war is being waged on Iran. It started with the economy but it could later escalate.

Reporter, Male #1
Iran says the Western embargo on its oil is akin to a declaration of war, and the West says the closure of the Strait of Hormuz is an open declaration of war. And in between, no one wants to be responsible for igniting the first spark.

Iran is fighting on three fronts: the nuclear talks which seem to be taking a long time, improving the country's economy amid increasing sanctions, and the countering of military threats with similar threats. It has already stopped sales to France, Britain, and Greece, in response to EU sanctions on its oil industry. Tehran has also banned imports from over 100 European firms. Iran's decision to stop oil sales to European countries has shot up global oil prices, as well as fuel prices in the US and Britain, to record highs.</media:text>

Joining us now from our Tel Aviv studio to discuss regional development is Middle East expert Dr. Ra'anan Gissin. Good evening, Dr. Gissin.

Guest, Male #3 (Dr. Ra'anan Gissin, Middle East Analyst)
Good evening, Erin. It's good to be back.

Presenter, Female #1
Nice to have you with us. Now, Ra'anan, as you know, the Prime Minister Netanyahu set off on his North American diplomatic mission this morning. What needs to be accomplished for this trip to be considered a success?

Guest, Male #3
I think the most important thing right now, it seems, on the face of it, would be a joint, very clear and unequivocal statement that if and when sanctions fail, the other options which are on the table will be exercised. Better, I would say, and hopefully that will be reflected in the statement, not by Israel alone, but with Israel, the United States leading, and perhaps the whole coalition of countries which are facing the Iranian threat. Because, mind you, you know, the real problem originally, when the Iranian issue arose, that Israel is not alone here, and I think one of the things that we have to come out of this meeting, or that would be the desired outcome of the meeting for the Netanyahu delegation, is to come out with a clear understanding, where the president unequivocally says to the world, and says to the Iranians, you have to see, if you don't comply with the sanctions, then we will exercise the other options, and the United States will be with Israel. Israel is not alone in this game. This game is Iran versus the world, not just Iran versus Israel.

Presenter, Female #1
We know that the leaders are going to try to repair a united front for the TV cameras. But if there is trouble developing behind the scenes, how would we know that?

Guest, Male #3
Well, there's not doubt that, I would say, first of all, there is more understandings than there are problems. Because over the years, I would say maybe the past five years, the United States teams and Israeli teams have been working together on all, I would say, covering the whole gamut of contingency plans if and when there will be a need for some sort of joint action. And I'm saying there is much more cooperation than there is misunderstanding or divisions. The divisions and the differences lie when two main sound bites, the deadline and the Red Line, beyond which you know it is clear that this is the point of no return, that Iran is going to go nuclear, and there is the need to exercise other options. And what is the deadline? When should that be exercised? I think these are the two issues that the teams are trying to work out, and I think it will be reflected in the statement that will be issued whether there is an understanding of that. One thing is clear: the message to Iran coming out of this joint meeting and the joint statement should be unequivocally clear, that there are sanctions, but behind those sanctions, there's also a loaded gun. If the sanctions don't work, the gun will be operated.</media:text>

White House spokesman Jim Carney said the Obama administration remains determined to keep Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, but Carney stressed the need for Israel to allow more time for sanctions before launching a military strike.

Guest, Male #2 (Jay Carney, White House Press Secretary)
What we feel, as I've said, and others have said, importantly the President has said, that there is time and space for diplomacy to work for the effect of sanctions to result in a change in Iranian behavior and an agreement by Iran to live up to its obligations to engage in negotiations and resolve this matter peacefully. We do not, of course, as we've said many times, take any option off the table.

Presenter, Female #1
And over at the State Department, officials downplayed any tensions between the US and Israel over what is the best course of action towards Tehran.

Guest, Female #2 (Victoria Nuland, State Department Spokeswoman)
Israel and the United States both believe that Iran has got to live up to its international obligations, and we're focused on the pressure we can bring to bear to make sure that happens.

Guest, Female #3
Well considering that the head for the DNI, James Clapper, is on his way to Israel this week, and there are reports now that Defense Minister Ehud Barak may be in Washington several days ahead of his expected appearance in the APEC conference the week after next, it seems to suggest that there seems to be more talking and more persuading that needs to be done with the Netanyahu government.

Guest, Female #2
You know, we've always had a very intense set of engagements with Israel, so this is just part and parcel of the conversation that we're having in all channels and in all levels, not only about Iran, of course, but about bilateral issues, about Syria, about the neighborhood. So it makes sense that various members of the US government are meeting various members of the Israeli government in this season.

<media:text>The West says Iran is making a nuclear bomb. Tehran says it's treating cancer. This compelling investigation gets right to the heart of the maelstrom, interrogating facts, falsehoods and shocking allegations. &quot; We have one million patients struggling with cancer and they need regular isotopes&quot;, argues Iran's ambassador for the IAEA, Dr Ali Soltanieh. Experts are quick to dismiss this reasoning, saying Iran's reactor at Natanz is, &quot;too big, too far from hospitals and too secretive&quot;. Yet in this report the former director of the IAEA, Robert Kelley, admits that the famously leaked 2009 IAEA document, supposedly offering proof of Iran's nuclear ambitions, is likely to be a forgery. Whatever the truth, Israel is growing increasingly twitchy. &quot;Israel must reserve the right to defend itself&quot;, Netanyahu has publicly announced. But is his rhetoric leading towards military confrontation? &quot;Once you make those kind of threats, you come to the point where you've got to show you're serious&quot;. Yet Ronen Bergen, an expert on the Israeli secret service, insists that if it had been up to Israel, Iran would have had an atom bomb years ago. He describes how during the 1970s Israel actively encouraged Iran to move towards nuclear armament. &quot;Israel was knowingly helping Iran to build the vehicle for a nuclear bomb&quot;. Despite current international pressure, Iran isn't shying away from fighting talk. The suggestion of heavy interference in their nuclear plans is met with a chilling riposte: &quot; We will teach them a lesson they will never forget in history&quot;. </media:text>

<media:text>In other news today, US President Barack Obama has convinced Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to allow time for sanctions to bear pressure on Iran. This according to The New York Times, which reports that Obama believes that Jerusalem is still considering its options, but like Washington, Jerusalem remains convinced that Iran must be forced to stand down on its nuclear weapons program. The Obama administration is also reportedly upset with defense minister Ehud Barak's recent comments about whether the Islamic republic's nuclear facilities are on the verge of being made impregnable to attack. Barak recently said that the so-called &quot;zone of immunity&quot; will come into place, and after that time Israel will no longer be willing or able to cripple Tehran's efforts to produce nuclear weapons.</media:text>

Iran said it needs nuclear energy to generate electricity, not to produce an atomic bomb. It also expressed willingness to resume talks on its nuclear program. Meanwhile, Washington and its Western allies decided to increase their pressure on Tehran. According to media sources in Tehran, Iran's parliament said it is ready to halt oil exports to certain European countries.

Iran has rejected the new US sanctions that target the Islamic Republic's Central Bank and grant American banks new powers to freeze Iranian government assets. The US move, which was announced in an executive order signed by President Obama, is the latest of a series of measures targeting the Central Bank of Iran in order to fix the loopholes in the existing sanctions.

Guest, Male #3, (Ramin Mehmanparast, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
This campaign is in the sphere of a psychological war. Many of these sanctions will not have an effect on the progress of our cooperation with various countries.

Tension between Iran and the West escalated last month after Washington and the European Union took measures that target the exports OPEC's second largest oil producer, in a bid to force Iran to abandon the military aspect of its controversial nuclear program. Tehran said it will counter the sanctions with similar sanctions. However, Iran postponed a parliamentary debate on the issue scheduled for January 30. It seems as though Obama's announcement has provoked Iranian parliamentarians, who said they are ready to adopt a resolution to ban oil exports to certain European countries, as confirmed by local media circles. The Iranian move aims to mount pressure on the European Union to change its position before the ban of Iranian oil imports goes into effect next July. In a letter addressed to Congress, Obama said Iranian banks were hiding transactions in order to undercut the financial sanctions imposed by the United States and other powers in response to Iran's ambiguous nuclear program, which the West insists has a military component. The last round of negotiations in early 2010 failed due to Tehran's refusal to halt uranium enrichment, as demanded by the UN Security Council and the world's leading powers. Washington and Israel have not ruled out the military option if diplomacy fails to restrain Iranian nuclear ambitions. For its part, Tehran is warning of a strong response if it comes under any attack.</media:text>

<media:text>Joining us in the studio to discuss recent statements coming from Washington is Calev Ben David, senior Israel correspondent from Bloomberg News. President Obama said Israel had not yet decided what to do about Iran. He stressed that Washington and Jerusalem are on the same page. Just a few days ago though Obama's defense chief said he thought Israel might attach Iran in the spring. Are they on the same page? David: Maybe about a strike, I mean I think there is a little too much talk about whether or not a strike is imminent. I don't think at this time that it is. But I think on the question of sanctions, the timing of sanctions, I think they are not on the same page.

<media:text>Here at home, in capping a day of strident warnings from Israeli officials about the dangers posed by Iran, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said that the world is increasingly prepared to consider a military strike against the Islamic republic if the economic sanctions fail to halt Iran's suspected nuclear program. Barak made his comments at the 12th Herzliya Conference, which serves as a center stage for the articulation of national policy by many prominent leaders. Vice President Premier Moshe Ya-Alon, who heads the Strategic Affairs Ministry, described all Iranian nuclear installations as vulnerable to military strikes. This assessment from the former IDF chief of staff comes in contradiction to those of other Israeli defense officials and experts, who have estimated that such a strike would be extraordinarily difficult due to the location of Iranian nuclear targets dozens of meters below the ground. Ya-Alon also went on to tell the audience that Tehran is also attempting to develop missiles with a 10,000 kilometer range, with the capability to strike the United States, and has already enriched uranium sufficient to construct four rudimentary nuclear bombs.</media:text>

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi welcomed the International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors to his country. He asserted that there is nothing about Iran's nuclear activities that calls for suspicion. On the sidelines of the African Union's summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Salehi said nuclear fuel rods with 20 percent enriched uranium would be used in the Tehran research reactor within a month. He reiterated that his country enriched uranium according to its rights after relevant countries abandoned their obligations to provide nuclear fuel for the reactor. The Iranian Defense Ministry unveiled the manufacturing of 155mm smart munitions named &quot;Basir&quot; on the anniversary of the Islamic revolution's victory in Iran. Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier-General Ahmad Vahidi said these munitions are laser-guided with high accuracy in targeting tanks, command centers, and moving objects. The munitions can be used in armed confrontations in mountainous areas. He added that the laser system can very accurately determine targets. In addition, Vahidi revealed a special naval aircraft and new cruise missiles produced by Iranian experts. Iranian Oil Minister Rostam Qasimi said his country will cut off its oil exports from certain countries, stressing that there are other markets than Europe. Iranian parliamentarians expected the European Union to retract its decision to impose an embargo on Iranian oil exports. Meanwhile, India said it has not made a decision about its Iranian oil imports.

Iran continues to react to Western pressure, most recently the European Union's embargo on Iranian oil. Iran does not see this embargo as a matter of significance, asserting that it has alternative markets. To strengthen its position, Iran announced it will cut off oil exports to Europe after the Iranian parliament issued a draft resolution on the matter. Iranian Oil Minister Rostam Qasimi said Tehran will cutoff its oil exports to certain countries soon, stressing the existence of alternative markets to Europe. He indicated that Iran's oil exports to Europe accounted for less than 20 percent of its gross exports and that ending them would not cause any setbacks for the country. His deputy Ahmad Qalebani reiterated the same statement, stating that Tehran has received oil requests from new customers. Qalebani considered Europe an untrustworthy partner to Iran, warning that Europe's decision will have a negative impact on its nations. During the parliamentary session that completed a draft resolution about ending oil exports to Europe, representatives affirmed that Europe's oil embargo was nothing but a psychological and media war.

Guest, Male #1 (Hussein Naqwi, Iranian Member of Parliament)
The purpose of creating this issue is to generate the atmosphere of a psychological war on our country's economy. By issuing the draft resolution halting oil exports to Europe, the representatives wanted to reiterate that our economy will not be affected, even if the European Union does indeed stop buying Iranian oil.

Reporter, Female #2
The members of parliament expected Europe to retract its decision, considering Europe to be the most affected in this war.

Guest, Male #2 (Sheikh Hussein Ibrahimi, Member of the National Security Committee in Iranian Parliament)
The Europeans themselves were hesitant about their decision. They made this decision under US pressure. European companies themselves said the embargo will inflict damages on them. It is not easy to find an alternative oil supplier.

Reporter, Female #2
Indeed, Europe will be the biggest loser in this war, especially its countries with deteriorating economies such as Greece and Italy, in light of the difficulty in finding another supplier that will compensate for Iranian oil without demanding additional financial guarantees. On the other hand, Iran received confirmation that its major customers will continue buying Iranian oil. The most recent confirmation was from India. Indian Minister of Finance Pranab Mukherjee said India cannot reduce its oil imports from Iran, a major regional power whose economy has an impact on the economy of the whole Third World. Indeed, Iran is a power that has managed to overcome the sanctions imposed on it for over 30 years and become a power with significant weight in the region. </media:text>
