Russia Expresses Concern over Military Activity 'Near' North Korea

Soldiers have joined a mass rally in the North Korean capital Pyongyang, after leader Kim Jong-un stepped up threats against the US. He has signed off an order, putting missile units on standby to attack American bases in neighboring South Korea and the Pacific. Russia says it is worried about increased military activity near North Korea, an apparent reference to joint drills being run by Washington and Seoul. "We are concerned that, along with this adequate reaction of the Security Council, along with the collective reaction of the world community, unilateral actions are being taken around North Korea, which are manifested in the build-up of military activity," said Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister, at a news conference in Moscow. "The situation may slip out of control and fall into a vicious circle." North Korea made its latest threats after the US flew two nuclear-capable stealth bombers over the Korean peninsula. A propaganda video animation, posted on the internet, is said to show a North Korean missile destroying one of those planes. Few believe that Pyongyang will risk starting an all-out war. <br />

<media:text>Soldiers have joined a mass rally in the North Korean capital Pyongyang, after leader Kim Jong-un stepped up threats against the US. </media:text>

<media:text>Syria has lodged a formal complaint with the UN over an airstrike inside the country blamed on Israel. There is confusion over what was actually hit, with Syrian state television reporting two people killed and five injured in the strike against a research center in Jamraya near Syria's border with Lebanon. American officials say what was struck was a convoy carrying weapons to Lebanon for militant group Hezbollah. The bombing has drawn criticism from Russia, with the Kremlin calling it "unacceptable" if it was carried out by the Israeli Defense Force. "So we made a very careful conclusion that, if the information is confirmed, then this is of course a serious breach of the basic norms of international law," said Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich. Repeating Ankara's earliest assessment that the Syria crisis would lead to wider problems for the whole of the Middle East, spokesman from Turkey's Foreign Ministry Selcuk Unal said: "We have been watching the developments in the media. This incident shows how complicated the situation in Syria has become and how it threatens international peace in the region." There has been no word from Israel confirming or denying whether IDF jets carried out the bombing or reports from Lebanon that Israeli planes were in Lebanese airspace during the time of the attack. </media:text>

A Russian court has thrown out an attempt by Maria Alekhina to have her prison sentence deferred. The member of Pussy Riot, the feminist punk band had asked the court to let her serve the rest of her two-year sentence when her five-year-old son is a teenager. Alekhina argued that separation from her son now would do irreparable psychological damage. She wanted her prison term to be deferred until the child was 14. The court said it had already taken her son into consideration when sentencing her. Three members of the Pussy Riot band were sentenced for an unauthorized protest in the Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow last February against the rule of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Two of the women were given two-year terms while the third received a suspended sentence. <br />

Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Moscow to protest the new ban on US citizens adopting Russian children. The law followed one by Washington blacklisting certain Russian officials. But the tit-for-tat move has triggered a public outcry against making children political pawns. Marchers held aloft photos of officials' faces branded with the word "shame."

Russia: New Research Reveals Alarming Spike in HIV Cases

New research has revealed an alarming spike in the number of HIV infections in Russia, with 200 people being diagnosed with the condition every day. Vadim Pokrovsky, the head of Russia's AIDS research center, has said that, instead of recognizing a crisis, the government is indifferent to the problem. "If we had 200 cases of diarrhea at a children's pioneer camp, the country's head sanitation doctor would fly out immediately to save them," Pokrovsky said. "It would be frightening. Governors would run, helicopters would fly, the police would search for the source of infection, prosecutors would get to work. But here we are seeing that there is complete indifference to this situation." Al Jazeera's Robin Forestier-Walker reports from Moscow.
