Bahrain: Protests, Violence, Death Greets Second Anniversary of Uprising

Security forces in Bahrain shot dead a teenage boy on Thursday as protesters marked the second anniversary of the failed Arab Spring uprising. The shooting happened in a small village near the capital Manama after a radical underground group called for a general strike and a day of civil disobedience. Earlier in the week, riot police were deployed to disperse demonstrators and clashes broke out when tea gas was fired. The main opposition continues to demand the freeing of dozens of political prisoners, who were detained two years ago. Seven of them were interviewed by Amnesty International at Bahrain's Jaw prison last month. All of them say they've been jailed on false charges or under laws that repress basic rights. The human rights group also released a video from Maryam Abu Deeb, the daughter of one prisoner, Mahdi Abe Deeb, who is the president of the Bahrain Teachers Association. "My dad has been prisoned now for two years, sentenced to five years for exercising his right to freedom of expression," she recounted. Dozens of people were killed during February and March 2011 when the original uprising took hold. Human rights groups claim security forces used excessive force as they attempted to quash the protests. Many prisoners were allegedly tortured in the first weeks of their arrests. <br />

Protesters in Egypt's Tahrir Square have been hit with a volley of tear gas, as anger continues to rise against President Mohamed Morsi and his decree granting himself sweeping powers. This has become one of the biggest demonstrations since Hosni Mubarak's overthrow. The president has defended the decree as a temporary effort to speed up reforms and complete a democratic transformation. But his pleas, and those from the Muslim Brotherhood party, have failed to stop the protests from spreading to other cities including Alexandria, Suez, and Minya.

<media:text>Early morning protesters in Egypt's Tahrir Square have been hit with a volley of tear gas as anger continues to rise against President Mohamed Morsi and his decree granting himself sweeping powers. This has become one of the biggest demonstrations since Hosni Mubarak's overthrow. One demonstrator accused riot police of using heavy-handed tactics to break-up the rally: "Unemployment is increasing and people are tired; the people who they're calling 'old regime remnants' in the square, all these people are civilized, university students, doctors, and they're all exceptional people. What the government is doing is unacceptable. The police are firing at us without any of us throwing a single stone; I am a witness. I swear to God, right now they fired without any of us throwing a stone," said Abdel Hamid Ramadan. The president has defended the decree as a temporary effort to speed up reforms and complete a democratic transformation. But his pleas, and those from the Muslim Brotherhood party have failed to stop the protests from spreading to other cities including Alexandria, Suez, and Minya.</media:text>

Violent Clashes in Athens as Latest General Strike Paralyzes Greece

The latest demonstrations against austerity measures in Greece have led to some clashes between protesters and police. Four thousand officers have been deployed to protect parliament and government ministries. Thousands of people have been gathering in central Athens amid a general strike, the second major walkout in three weeks. A 65-year-old activist at the demonstration died of an apparent heart attack. He was not thought to have been close to the main clashes with police. Many protesters want to send a clear message to EU leaders saying "no" to further austerity. Ships have stayed in port, public transport in the capital has been disrupted, hospitals have been operating on emergency-only, while public offices and many shops have remained closed. Several marches have been planned to coincide with the 24-hour stoppage, called by the two largest unions. Greece is planning 11.5 billion euros of cuts to secure its next batch of bailout aid. With the country due to run out of money next month, the government feels it has little choice but to implement the cuts which include a drastic reduction in welfare and health spending. <br />

Israeli police stormed a holy site in Jerusalem's Old City on Friday, dispersing dozens of Palestinians who police say lobbed rocks at officers. The clash occurred at a compound containing the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of Islam's holiest sites. Jews call the compound the Temple Mount because of the biblical Jewish temples they believe once stood there. An Israeli police spokesman said Palestinian protestors threw rocks at police stationed at the compound entrance. <media:text>Extreme police tactics are not a new phenomenon in the United States. But in the age of social media, police violence, such as the shooting of unarmed people, the use of pepper spray and taser guns are being documented for the world to see. The Occupy protesters throughout the country felt the full force of police tactics - many were subject to violent arrest. Perhaps the most controversial example was at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) where peaceful protesters were pepper sprayed last November. Inside Story Americas leads a debate on whether American police brutality has become an institutionalized problem.</media:text>

<media:text>Canada's "student uprising" continues unabated, with 160 protests in just two months. And, with new clashes on Thursday night, the standoff over tuition fee hikes is turning increasingly violent. Centering on the country's second largest city of Montreal, clashes resumed after talks collapsed between student leaders and authorities. Riot officers charged, maced, and detained dozens of protesters, while the police chief publicly complained that his forces were worn out. The students are incensed over a tuition fees rise which the government says is necessary. But journalist Bernard Desgagne, says heavy-handed policing will only provoke the students further. </media:text>

<media:text>National Park Service police began slowly dismantling the Occupy DC encampment at McPherson Square on K Street early Saturday morning. Over the course of several hours, cops asked protesters to leave while authorities in hazmat suits combed the park and removed tents. Despite protesters insisting that the temporary structures were in compliance with the latest regulations imposed on the demonstrators, the cops continued to clear out the park throughout the course of the day. With only a small section of McPherson still spared by late afternoon, authorities eventually moved in and used force to clear the rest of the park. Protesters, passersby and journalists alike were assaulted as cops clad in riot gear stormed into the crowd and attacked anyone on the scene. Here cops are showing forcing a group of people out of the park with plastic shields and batons, only for them to fall into the mud and be crammed into a fence that prevented them from easily vacating the premises. Several arrests were reported, including one photojournalist, and many others were injured in the raid, including one RT cameraman.</media:text>

<media:text>Algerian security forces dispersed a riot on Tuesday by throwing water cannons and tear gas at protesters in Cheraga, a suburb of the capital Algiers. The angry residents hurled stones and Molotov cocktails at the paramilitary police demanding increased efforts in the investigation of a local man who they alleged was fatally stabbed by a gang. The father of the victim, Nouredine Ait Ouareth, says the priority is for justice to be served and for the government to give importance to the case, as some locals believed the release of a few of the apprehended suspects was due to their prominent status in society. Redouane, a neighbor of the victim, said they will continue to protest until those responsible are arrested and pay for their crime, and to call for the expulsion of the prosecutor dealing with the case. Riots have become common in Algeria and shares the problems of its neighbors in terms of unemployment and suspicion of governmental corruption. While the recent unrest has been contained and sporadic, such friction between residents and authorities could manifest into a national movement akin to the countries involved in last year's Arab Spring. <media:text>Police have arrested more than 400 Occupy Oakland protesters, as well as a number of journalists, in one of the largest mass arrests since the nationwide Occupy protests began last year. When protesters attempted to convert a vacant building into a community center on Saturday, witnesses say police used tear gas, bean bag projectiles and flash grenades. Several hours later, police said some of the protesters broke into City Hall. However, demonstrators claim they found the door to City Hall already ajar. We play a video report from Oakland filed by John Hamilton of KPFA. We get a response from Occupy Oakland member, Maria Lewis, to Oakland City Councilmember Ignacio De La Fuente's accusation that the Occupy Movement is engaging in "domestic terrorism." "They are more interested in protecting abandoned private property than they are the people. The idea that opening up a social center is terrorism, is very telling of the narrative of the police state," Lewis says. </media:text>

<media:text>About 2,000 Brazilian police officers in riot gear have forcefully evicted 7,000 residents of a community in Sao Jose dos Campos, about 100km from the city of Sao Paulo. The site, known as 'Pinheirinho,' had been occupied since 2004, and settlers had built homes there. The police were executing a court order to remove the residents. Police deployed about 2,000 men, 40 dogs and 100 police on horseback as well as helicopters and armored vehicles in Sunday's raid. Officers used tear gas and rubber bullets, according to a preliminary report on the incident. Hundreds of residents spent the night in emergency accommodation. The occupied site belonged to a firm that went bankrupt and whose assets are to serve to pay creditors. Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo went to Sao Jose dos Campos to visit some of those left homeless.</media:text>

Several people were injured after hundreds of riot police attacked demonstrators. Many others, including a 13-year-old boy, have been arrested. Rights groups have slammed the government for clamping down on demonstrators since they began taking to the streets early last year. More than 105,000 stateless people in Kuwait known as bidoon have been denied citizenship for decades. The central government has refused to give them essential documents such as birth, marriage, and death certificates. It says that only 34,000 of them qualify for citizenship. </media:text>

<media:text>WARNING: Graphic Content: Egyptians have been shocked by a video showing military police beating a prone female protester in recent clashes. The ongoing violence centered around Cairo's Tahrir Square has left at least 10 people dead and hundreds injured. The video, uploaded to YouTube Sunday, shows army soldiers in full riot gear attacking a seemingly unconscious female protester. These images are startling to Egyptian eyes due not only to the obvious violence against a defenceless female, but also because the soldiers violate the woman's modesty by pulling her clothing - a black abaya - over her head, exposing her bra and midriff.</media:text>

Tens of thousands marched from Foley Square to Zuccotti Park, renamed "Liberty Plaza," the site of the protest encampment where hundreds have been sleeping since Sept. 17. The march was peaceful ,but police later beat a handful of protesters with batons after they toppled a police barricade in an attempt to march down Wall Street. A videotape obtained by al-Alam TV reveals that the poisonous tear-gas bombs used by Bahraini security institutions are imported from the United States. Meanwhile, the issue of detainees in increasingly poor health conditions, especially children, remains unsolved.

The Bahraini street will continue its peaceful popular movement as long as the ruling authority continues its policy of marginalization. Government forces are escalating their repressive operations against civilians, using all kinds of bombs against the peaceful demonstrators. In addition to the security operations on the ground, regime forces are on the move in the air. The scene is turning into a complicated military air operation, but against whom? In this context, the issue of detained doctors in Bahraini prisons remains unsolved. A hunger strike began in Bahrain in solidarity with the doctors who have been on a hunger strike for several days. Manama authorities accused the doctors of working against the regime and of threatening its security by helping wounded protestors. These doctors include Ghassam, Basim Taif, Nazir Diwani, Abdul Khaliq al-Aribi, Ali Azghar, and many others.

It has been indicated more than once that we are being killed, our youth are being killed, and our women are being killed by the most advanced US bullets, pistols, and tear-gas imported from France, Britain, and the US.

This announcement was greatly supported inside and outside Bahrain. A group of children joined the movement, followed by an increasing number of people of various ages. On the ground, a videotape revealed that the poisonous tear-gas bombs used by Bahraini security institutions are imported from the United States. The deadly gas contained in these bombs martyred a number of Bahrainis, most recently a young man named Ali Jawad who died after being wounded by a tear-gas bomb on Sitra Island on the first day of Eid ul-Fitr. Media sources reported that the chief of staff of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Persian Gulf will convene a meeting in the Emirati capital Abu Dhabi to discuss the new propositions regarding the strategic military plans for the Council's member countries in the upcoming phase in order to strengthen their defense capabilities in the face of any internal or external challenges. Political observers said that the meeting may suggest that the Saudi and Emirati occupation forces continue to mass in Bahrain in light of what they referred to as the threats to undermine Bahrain's stability and security.
