<title>Fear in Israel as Hamas Rocket Attacks Increase</title>
        <link>http://news.linktv.org/videos/fear-in-israel-as-hamas-rocket-attacks-increase?start=0</link>
<description>Video footage shows the reaction in Israel to the latest rocket attacks by Palestinian militant group Hamas. One woman is visibly upset as an Israeli anti-missile system is activated, suggesting further rockets have been launched from Gaza. Three people were killed when this four storey residential building was hit in a town 25 kilometres north of Gaza. They were the first Israeli casualties of the latest conflict. Witnesses say Hamas fired several rockets over the border overnight. Israel's Iron Dome interceptor has shot down more than 30 missiles and the Israeli military says it has destroyed much of Gaza's long-range rocket stockpile during its own strikes. &lt;br /&gt;</description>

<description>A second day of air strikes on Syrian towns near the Turkish border is continuing to cause chaos. Some refugees can be seen squeezing under barbed wire fences to enter Turkey. Medical workers and refugees in Ceylanpinar say bombs have fallen on residential areas of Ras al-Ain, an Arab and Kurdish town that fell to rebels last week during an advance into Syria's northeast. &lt;br /&gt;</description>

<media:text>A second day of air strikes on Syrian towns near the Turkish border is continuing to cause chaos. Opposition activists say at least a dozen people were killed on Monday, the latest of an estimated 38,000 victims of the 19 month civil war. Turkey is reluctant to be drawn into a regional conflict but the proximity of the air raids to the border is testing its pledge to defend itself from any violation of its territory or any spillover of violence from Syria. </media:text>

<media:text>The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan says he's ordered new restrictions on air strikes targeting Taliban militants hiding in residential homes. The directive from General John Allen prompted the Afghan government to claim the U.S.-led NATO occupation force has agreed to stop bombing residential areas and homes altogether. But U.S. officials say the attacks will continue but now under stricter guidelines for air strikes, not ground operations. The new policy was unveiled amidst widespread anger over the latest NATO attack that killed 18 civilians, including nine children, last week. On Friday, Allen met directly with some of the victims' families and apologized to the Afghan people.
Gen. John Allen: &quot;This was a joint Afghan and U.S. force. They were taken under fire. A hand grenade was thrown. Three of our people were wounded. We called for the people who were shooting to come out. And then the situation became more grave, and the innocent people were killed. On those occasions when our forces accidentally kill or harm Afghan people, we are very sad. And I have come here today to offer you my condolences and my regrets, but importantly, to apologize to each of you for this tragedy.&quot;
General Allen's new directive to limit air strikes comes nearly two years after his predecessor, General David Petraeus, also issued new rules that were billed as a major step toward reducing civilian casualties.

<media:text>Kofi Annan, the UN-Arab League envoy to Syria, has said it is not too late to implement a UN-brokered peace plan, despite reports of continued violence across the embattled country. Activists on Tuesday reported heavy shelling by government troops in the city of Homs and the northern village of Marea in Aleppo. Walid Muallem, the Syrian foreign minister, said in Moscow that Damascus had started pulling some troops out of different provinces. But Annan said he had information that while the Syrian military was withdrawing from some areas, it was also moving to others not previously targeted.</media:text>

<media:text>In the Syrian capital Damascus, there have been reports of heavy fighting between Free Syria Army rebels and forces loyal to President Bashar al Assad. The fierce gun battles are said to have taken place in the western district of al-Mezze. The area is one of the most heavily guarded in the capital and is home to several security installations. It follows a weekend of deadly violence elsewhere in the capital. At least 27 people are said to have been killed and around 140 others hurt in suicide bomb attacks on intelligence and security buildings near al-Tahrir Square. Residential buildings within 1,000 meters of the blast suffered extensive damage. On Sunday, there was an explosion too in Syria's second city of Aleppo. A car bomb ripped through a residential area killing two people and wounding 30 others. </media:text>

<media:text>The Syrian army's crackdown on opposition to President Bashar al-Assad's rule appears to be intensifying. Al Jazeera journalists have witnessed Syrian forces using heavy weapons to bombard civilian areas in the city of Idlib in the northwest of the country. Tight reporting restrictions have limited the international media's access to Syria. However, Anita McNaught and her team managed to get into Idlib, and were there when the military assault began.</media:text>

<media:text>Relief workers have not yet been able to start the search for bodies at a blast site around a destroyed munitions dump in the Republic of Congo. Unexploded rockets litter the ground, meaning the area is still too dangerous, even for the Red Cross. The powerful blast destroyed homes in the surrounding area and even blew out windows miles away in Kinshasa, capital of the neighboring DRC. Victims whose houses were flattened are now asking why an arms dump containing bombs up to 250kg (550lbs) in size was located so close to a residential area. <media:text>As residents of the besieged Homs district of Baba Amr lined up outside with buckets in a desperate attempt to reap drinking water from the slight snowfall, the government continued to attack the opposition stronghold to only worsen its humanitarian conditions. Witnesses say Baba Amr is surrounded by government forces as they continued to shell residential areas using heavy tanks and rockets for the 27th day in a row. Some activists say opposition fighters have been withdrawing from the district as a &quot;tactical retreat.&quot; They said they were running out of weapons and humanitarian conditions were catastrophic. Meanwhile, the Syrian Red Crescent has been denied passage into Baba Amr to help deliver much needed aid to residents. Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee reports.</media:text>

Our al-Jazeera correspondent in Yemen reported that a child was killed and over ten people were wounded in the city of Taiz when Saleh's loyalist forces shelled Freedom Square and ar-Raoda residential neighborhood with artilleries and tanks.

Presenter, Female #1
Our correspondent in Yemen added that the shelling is still ongoing in the two areas. The shelling came after a massive demonstration march to Freedom Square demanding the arrest and trial of President Saleh.

The following images show the child who was killed and a number of wounded in the shelling by President Saleh's forces on neighborhoods in the city of Taiz.

This is Freedom Square in Taiz on a Friday. Protestors flocked here after they marched through streets of the city. But security concerns dominate the atmosphere after President Saleh's forces stormed the square and tore down the camp there in late May. Armed supporters of the revolution managed to rebuild the camp several days later.

Guest, Male #3
The revolutionaries cannot continue protesting the same as before because the peacefulness of the squares was tainted by the repeated attacks on them.

Reporter, Male #2
A tour inside the square reveals the scale of the damages inflicted on it and the surrounding buildings by President Saleh's forces after they continuously shelled it, most intensely at night. Journalists, including a team from al-Jazeera, were staying in this hotel before it turned into evidence of the scale of violence facing the revolution. The square is filled with activities. Here, for instance, artists are painting the wishes of those they refer to as martyrs of the revolution. There are also children in Freedom Square doing what they like. Other children vigorously walk through the square on their way home. It seems they may learn a lot from the square. Many have abandoned their sites in the square to organize daily protests outside. But these young people refused to leave the square, even if staying costs them their lives. They stay in this camp and share the misery of life together.

Guest, Male #4
We are camping out here for our martyrs, for the young and children martyrs, and for the beaten women. We will be steadfast here until the final day when Ali Abdullah Saleh steps down.

Reporter, Male #2
In the city's suburbs and countryside, the youth of the revolution built squares with the same name, so the whole region of Taiz appears to be praising the revolution. The youth of the revolution here say that President Saleh's regime is seeing its final days because of the revolution's escalation outside the squares. To them, Freedom Square is a symbolic place people frequent in order to affirm the importance of unity in the face of the continued attempt to dismantle the organized leadership of the movement. Hamdi al-Bukari, al-Jazeera, Freedom Square, Taiz.

Our al-Jazeera correspondent in Sirte reported that a revolutionary was killed and at least 30 others were wounded in the continuous street fighting with Gaddafi's battalions in the city.

Our correspondent quoted a revolutionary field commander saying they took control of several of the city's neighborhoods and confirming they are facing violent resistance from a group of trained snipers.

Presenter, Female #1
Our correspondent, Osama Said Ahmed, reports on the latest military developments in Sirte.

Reporter, Male #2
Street fighting is ongoing between the revolutionaries and Gaddafi's battalions in the city of Sirte. Its intensity increases every day and the sound of artillery and gunfire overwhelms everything else. Heavy clashes are taking place on the edges of what is known as the &quot;Mauritanian neighborhood&quot; inside the city. A number of snipers from Gaddafi's battalions are massing here, opening heavy fire on the revolutionaries. The revolutionaries are deeply engaged in ferocious clashes with what they refer to as the remnants of Gaddafi's battalions.

Guest, Male #3 (Hathim bin Ali, Field Commander)
We are fighting a real, intense war for the victory of our revolutionary brothers and the defeat of Gaddafi's forces. As you can see, the battle is very heated. And as you can see and hear, the fighting is very intense, and we're praying that God help us defeat them, eliminate Gaddafi and his aids, and bring peace.

Reporter, Male #2
Clouds of smoke are rising in central Sirte from the concentrated mortar shelling by the revolutionaries, who confirmed their control over a large part of one of the biggest neighborhoods in the city, neighborhood No. 3, in addition to 600 residential units near the coast. They are engaged in fierce battles and continuing to advance towards central Sirte.

Guest, Male #5 (Makhlouf al-Farjani, Spokesman for the Military Council in Sirte)
Our revolutionaries pushed into the residential neighborhood No. 3 and now they're combing the sea coast. And of course, the well-known 600-unit residential complex in Sirte was taken over by the revolutionaries two days ago. Now we're advancing towards the coast. In this coming hour we will head to central Sirte to liberate it from the corrupt gang.

Reporter, Male #1
The reality inside the city paints a picture of violent confrontations which may not end soon. The clashes, referred to as 'the street war' between the revolutionaries and Gaddafi's battalions inside the city of Sirte, are still at their height. Meanwhile, the revolutionaries assert once again that the battle will be resolved soon and the city will be in their full control.
