Former Pakistan President Musharraf Under House Arrest: 'Army Will Not Shield Him'

An analyst says while the powerful Pakistani military could protect&nbsp;former president&nbsp;Pervez&nbsp;Musharraf from facing justice they are allowing the democratic process of the high court to prevail.  In the background of this a Pakistani court has put Musharraf under house arrest for two days pending allegations of a string of charge, which may include treason and murder plots. Musharraf had left Pakistan to reside in Britain and anticipated now would be the right time for him to return to Pakistan on the eve of new elections to run for the presidential position once again. Expecting a welcoming return Musharraf was picked up by police upon his arrival into the country.  Press TV has interviewed Syed Tariq Pirzada, political analyst from Islamabad about this issue.&nbsp;

A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale has struck the town of Kaki near the southern Iranian city of Bushehr, killing at least 32 people and leaving more than 850 injured. But Iran's Press TV reports that the Bushehr nuclear facility was not affected. According to the Iranian Seismological Center, the quake has hit the town of Kaki, some 90 kilometers southeast of Bushehr, at 4:22 pm local time (1152 GMT) on Tuesday at a depth of 12 kilometers. The quake was followed by at least four aftershocks which jolted Kaki and the nearby city of Khour-Mowj. The Persian Gulf Arab states of Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have also felt the shocks from the quake. The Russian company that has constructed the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant said the quake has not affected the operations in the facility. The plant is located 18 km south of Bushehr and about 160 kilometers away from the quake-stricken region. "The earthquake in no way affected the normal situation at the [Bushehr nuclear] reactor. Personnel continue to work in the normal regime and radiation levels are fully within the norm," RIA Novosti quoted an official at Atomstroyexport as saying.&nbsp;

'Blatant Assault on Free Speech': Iranian TV Channels Gagged in Europe

European satellite provider Eutelsat is reportedly pressurizing a Slovenia-based satellite communications company to stop carrying Iran's Arabic-language Al-Alam news network. Press TV, Al-Alam's English-language equivalent, which has been the victim of similar moves in Europe and North America, describes the attempted takedown as "a blatant assault on the freedom of speech." Eutelsat has threatened the Slovenia-based satellite communications company Satellite Telecommunications Network (STN) with punitive measures if it doesn't remove Al-Alam from its platform within the next 48 hours. On February 20, the Arab satellite provider Gulfsat banned Iranian channels iFilm and Al-Kawthar, also under direct pressure from the Eutelsat, which says it is complying with EU-approved sanctions against Iran. Press TV has conducted an interview with Beirut-based political analyst Kamel Wazni to further discuss the issue. <br />

Press TV reports that an explosion in the Syrian capital Damascus destroyed several Press TV and Al-Alam vehicles. Meanwhile, three US senators have introduced a proposal as an amendment to previous unilateral sanctions against Iran. As part of the new proposal, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting and its head will be blacklisted. This comes as European sanctions against Iran have forced Press TV and other Iranian satellite channels off the air in many parts of Europe and the US, and after a Press TV reporter in Damascus was killed by sniper fire in September.

        <media:text>Media covering the Syrian unrest continue to be the targets of terrorist attacks. An explosion has destroyed several Press TV vehicles in the Syrian capital Damascus. Videos caught on camera show a man attaching something to a car near Press TV's office in Damascus. He then ran away, and minutes afterward, a bomb exploded, destroying several cars, including a satellite news gathering truck belonging to Press TV and Al-Alam offices. The blast did not cause any casualties. Meanwhile, Syrian security forces say they've dismantled another explosive device planted outside the same offices.

This is not the first time that Press TV has been targeted. On September 26, Press TV correspondent Maya Nasser was killed by sniper fire in an insurgent attack in the capital Damascus that also injured Press TV's Damascus bureau chief Hussein Mortada. In October, European satellite provider Eutelsat SA stopped the broadcast of Press TV and other Iranian satellite channels, citing an order by the European Commission that the Commission later denied. Ofcom, Britain's office of communications, also took Press TV off the air in the UK in October 2011.

Meanwhile, three US senators, Mark Kirk of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey, and Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, have introduced a proposal as an amendment to previous unilateral sanctions against Iran. The senators are claiming that the new move against Tehran is over its nuclear energy program. As part of the new proposal, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting and its head will be blacklisted. Washington would also block all IRIB assets and prevent other companies from doing business with it. If approved, the new proposal would become part of the annual defense policy bill, which must pass through the Senate and House of Representatives before it can become law.</media:text>

Adnan Farhan Abdul Latif was found dead in September at the military prison. The death was reported as a suicide from an overdose of psychiatric medication. However, US and Yemeni officials are questioning how he got his hands on the excess medication. Atif's lawyer, David Remes, has voiced skepticism about his client being able to hoard his daily dosages without detection.

Latif, was seriously injured in an auto accident in his native Yemen and was in Afghanistan, seeking free or charity medical treatment when he was taken captive by US-led occupation forces. He had been cleared for transfer back to his homeland before by both the Bush and Obama administrations; however, he wasn't sent home.</media:text>

        <media:text>France ends its combat mission in Afghanistan, two years before US-led foreign troops are scheduled to leave the country. The French military says troops have withdrawn from Kapisa, the strategic province northeast of the capital Kabul, as part of a quickened departure from the country. Paris decided to accelerate its withdrawal after a string of so-called "insider attacks" in 2011 and 2012, including a January assault in which an Afghan soldier shot dead five French troops at their base. France has lost 88 soldiers in Afghanistan. Some 1,500 soldiers will stay in the country into 2013 to take responsibility for repairing equipment.</media:text>

Free Speech Fail: Asian Satellite Provider Axes Iranian TV Channels

Press TV reports that an Asian satellite provider has stopped providing services to Iranian channels, including Press TV. Nearly 37 percent of AsiaSat's shares are owned by the American company General Electric. The network called AsiaSat about the development, but its corporate affairs manager, Winnie Pang, declined to comment. This move comes after two European satellite providers, Intelsat and Eutelsat SA, took 19 Iranian channels off the air in October under pressure from the European Union.<br />

        <media:text>Another satellite provider, this time in East Asia, pulls the plug on Press TV. AsiaSat said it has stopped providing services to all Iranian channels. The Hong Kong-based company says the decision is in line with the US law recently signed by President Barack Obama. According to the new sanctions, American companies are banned from doing business with Iran. In the case of AsiaSat, nearly 37 percent of its shares are owned by the American company General Electric. This is not the first time that satellite have removed Iranian TV channels from the air. Back in April, the Munich regulatory body ordered SCS-Astra to take Press TV off its platform. In October, two European satellite providers, Intelsat and Eutelsat SA, also took 19 Iranian channels off the air, claiming that the move had been under pressure from the EU. But the bloc denied the charges and later ordered the companies to refrain from commenting on the issue.

To find out why AsiaSat pulled the plug, Press TV contacted the satellite communication company. Its corporate affairs manager, Winnie Pang, promised to e-mail a statement to Press TV's newsroom director Hamid-Reza Emadi, but he did not receive any e-mails. They called the company to pursue the matter, where the manager said that the company had no comment on the issues of whether the US had ordered the company to take Iranian channels off the air.</media:text>

        <media:text>Press TV reports that the Palestinian prime minister in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, has called for unity, resistance, and steadfastness of Palestinians against the latest Israeli aggressions. Haniyeh paid tribute to the late military commander Ahmed al-Jaabari, who was killed in an Israeli air strike on Wednesday, saying that al-Jaabari's assassination will be avenged, and that the Hamas movement is entering a new era. He also hailed Egypt for its support in the decision to withdraw its ambassador from Tel Aviv.

The leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah movement, Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah, said the fresh Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip has once again shown the "true face" of the US and its allies. He said that since the US and other countries supported Israel's right to self-defense, the people of Gaza became the attackers, despite the dire humanitarian situation in the Strip.</media:text>

US-Taliban Talks Resume Amid Surge in Attacks on NATO Troops

Press TV reports that talks between the US and Taliban are continuing in the Qatari capital Doha, where the group has a political office, but many in the war-torn country say the US has resorted to these talks because it has failed in its campaign there. Britain, a key US ally, has also put its sway behind the negotiations. Afghan MP Farkhonda Naderi says that she isn't opposed to talks between the Taliban and the US, but says they should be led by Afghans, not Americans. The talks were suspended by Taliban leader Mullah Omar after US forces burned copies of the Quran in Bagram Air Base earlier this year. In Afghanistan, fighting continues as the Taliban step up their attacks on foreign troops.
