Former Pakistan President Musharraf Under House Arrest: 'Army Will Not Shield Him'

An analyst says while the powerful Pakistani military could protect former president Pervez Musharraf from facing justice they are allowing the democratic process of the high court to prevail. In the background of this a Pakistani court has put Musharraf under house arrest for two days pending allegations of a string of charge, which may include treason and murder plots. Musharraf had left Pakistan to reside in Britain and anticipated now would be the right time for him to return to Pakistan on the eve of new elections to run for the presidential position once again. Expecting a welcoming return Musharraf was picked up by police upon his arrival into the country. Press TV has interviewed Syed Tariq Pirzada, political analyst from Islamabad about this issue.

Strong Earthquake Hits Iran, Bushehr Nuclear Plant 'Unaffected'

A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale has struck the town of Kaki near the southern Iranian city of Bushehr, killing at least 32 people and leaving more than 850 injured. But Iran's Press TV reports that the Bushehr nuclear facility was not affected. According to the Iranian Seismological Center, the quake has hit the town of Kaki, some 90 kilometers southeast of Bushehr, at 4:22 pm local time (1152 GMT) on Tuesday at a depth of 12 kilometers. The quake was followed by at least four aftershocks which jolted Kaki and the nearby city of Khour-Mowj. The Persian Gulf Arab states of Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have also felt the shocks from the quake. The Russian company that has constructed the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant said the quake has not affected the operations in the facility. The plant is located 18 km south of Bushehr and about 160 kilometers away from the quake-stricken region. "The earthquake in no way affected the normal situation at the [Bushehr nuclear] reactor. Personnel continue to work in the normal regime and radiation levels are fully within the norm," RIA Novosti quoted an official at Atomstroyexport as saying.

Eutelsat has threatened the Slovenia-based satellite communications company Satellite Telecommunications Network (STN) with punitive measures if it doesn't remove Al-Alam from its platform within the next 48 hours. On February 20, the Arab satellite provider Gulfsat banned Iranian channels iFilm and Al-Kawthar, also under direct pressure from the Eutelsat, which says it is complying with EU-approved sanctions against Iran.
