Is Fracking the 'Nail in the Coffin' for Rural Poland?

<p>US domestic gas production is on the rise because of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, a controversial method of extracting natural gas from shale rock by pumping millions of gallons of water mixed with sand and chemicals underground at high pressure. Environmentalists say this gas boon threatens water supplies and pollutes air. Now, as fracking expands around the world, so does growing resistance. Earth Focus looks at three countries on the new fracking frontline: South Africa, Poland, and the UK. Reported from South Africa by Jeff Barbee and Andrew Wasley (The Ecologist) from Poland and the UK.</p>

<media:text>The "dash for gas" has gone east and the fracking multinationals have moved in to secure the sizable shale deposits lying deep in Poland's underbelly. Advocates say this will bring prosperity and jobs, but opponents cite the US experience -- where fracking has been marred by environmental and social concerns -- and fear it could be the final nail in the coffin for Poland's traditional rural communities.</media:text>

A praying Hitler statue installed in the former Warsaw Ghetto is sparking a storm of criticism. Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan isn't saying what Hitler is supposed to be praying for, but the statue is intended to provoke people to reflect on the nature of evil. "To put statute like this in the Warsaw Ghetto is so tasteless," said the director of a Jewish advocacy group.

Across Europe, Christmas Blows Hot and Cold

Christmas is looking very different across Europe and further east this year. Russia, which will actually celebrate Christmas day on January 7, has been gripped by an unseasonable chill for the last 10 days now. Eastern Siberia plunged as low as -50&deg;C (-58&ordm;F), while in Moscow it was a more modest -20&deg;C (-4&ordm;F). Poland has been thawing out for the most part, but eastern provinces close to Ukraine and Belarus continue to see heavy snow. Germany and France have been seeing other extremes however, the southern parts of both countries experiencing temperatures in excess of 20&deg;C (68&ordm;F).

<media:text>Mitt Romney, the presumed Republican candidate for the US presidency, has made his first overseas trip of the 2012 election season. It should have been an easy opportunity to burnish his foreign policy credentials, but Romney's trip has been anything but error-free. The former Massachusetts governor's first stop was in the UK, where he managed to earn the ire of the iconic city's mayor after Romney said it may not be prepared to host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Then in Israel, another long-time US ally, Romney said that Tel Aviv's economy was stronger than neighboring Palestine's because of Israel's "culture." His failure to refer to the Israeli occupation of Palestine followed the candidate all the way to Poland, where at least one journalist asked him about his earlier comments in the Middle East -- and a Romney aide responded in less than polite terms.</media:text>

<media:text>Moscow-based broadcaster Russia Today analyzes yesterday's violence between Russian and Polish football fans at Euro 2012. Poland's press, politicians, and officials have condemned the behavior of hooligans in Warsaw who apparently attacked Russian fans before the two countries' soccer showdown. Violence continued after the match, too, with Poland's ambassador to Russia saying Polish hooligans are to blame for the turmoil that resulted in multiple injuries. But was it press hype in Poland focussing on the sometimes bloody history between the two nations that helped whip up violent anti-Russian sentiment?</media:text>

Police believe extremists in the anti-Zionist ultra-Orthodox community are responsible. The graffiti, written in both formal Hebrew characters as well as in handwritten script, displayed messages such as "Hitler, thank you for the wonderful Holocaust," "If Hitler didn't exist, the Zionists wouldn't have had to invent him," "Jews, wake up: the evil Zionist regime is not protecting us, it's only putting us in harm's way," and, "To the respectable government of Poland: stop allowing the Zionists to conduct manipulative commemorations in Auschwitz." Some of the graffiti was signed, "From the World Zionist Mafia," while others were signed "World Haredi Judaism."</media:text>

<media:text>Members of the European Union are this hour convening in Poland for a special session regarding the Palestinian bid for statehood recognition slated to be held at the United Nations General Assembly later this month. Twenty-seven foreign ministers are to hold a debate on the issue including on whether to vote as a unified block. Further efforts to counter the Palestinian initiative at this appoint appear to be fruitless as many representatives of the European body have already declared their support of a sovereign Palestinian state. During a visit to the region earlier this week, European Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton nevertheless assured Israel that she is actively continuing her attempts to convince the Palestinian Authority to retract its initiative. </media:text>

<media:text>The widespread press on Netanyahu to address the pressure here at home forced the prime minister to postpone a state visit to Poland today. According to sources in the prime minister's office, Netanyahu chose to stay in the country to focus on the housing reform, rather than travel to Warsaw as scheduled. Netanyahu's itinerary had not been officially released. The trip was expected to be part of Israel's efforts to discourage Polish support of a Palestinian bid for statehood at the United Nations in September.
