<description>The long, drawn-out trial of Cambodia's former Khmer Rouge leaders has hit another snag. Just one Khmer Rouge official has ever been brought to justice, while three others are now in front of a UN-sponsored tribunal. And as LinkAsia's Justine Drennan reports from Phnom Penh, it's beginning to look as if they will never be tried.</description>

<media:text>In Cambodia, four leaders of the Khmer Rouge finally went to trial. They've been charged with war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. The charges stem from incidents way back in the 1970s, when the ultra-communist Khmer Rouge caused the deaths of up to two million people, a tragedy that ended when Vietnam invaded and toppled the regime in 1979. We have this report from VTV4.

The suspects on trial are important leaders of the Khmer Rouge. They include Nuon Chea, the second in command, Khieu Samphan, then head of state, Ieng Sary, the foreign minister, and his wife, Ieng Thirith, who was minister of social affairs. The four are on trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Khmer Rouge regime which took place from 1975 to 1979. During the trial, the court will hear testimony from victims and other related witnesses. Another session will take place in September.

Dim Sovannarom, Victim Spokesman:
Justice for the victims will be realized despite the long time span. This is an important case in terms of Cambodian culture, and necessary for the truth to come to light. The leaders of the Khmer Rouge will finally be tried for their crimes before the court.

In their four years of power, the Khmer Rouge directly caused the death of about 2 million Cambodians. The victims were starved, worked to death, imprisoned, and executed. Today there are lots of people that have come to the court house to witness the trial.

Tang Soc Kha, Phnom Penh resident:
Many people in my family were killed. Out of 11 people, only 3 survived. I've come to court today to wish that justice will be served for the victims.

The four suspects proclaim their innocence. Because of this, the trial could be drawn out for many months if not years. The court was established in 2006 by the United Nations. This is the second trial of the leaders of the Khmer Rouge. The previous trial in July 2010 resulted in a 35 year sentence for Khmer Rouge prison chief Kaing Guek Eav, known as Duch, for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

This is likely to be the last trial against senior leaders of the Khmer Rouge -- but only because most of them have already died.
