<description>&lt;strong&gt;WARNING: Graphic Content. &lt;/strong&gt;Clashes broke out on Friday afternoon following an Islamist protest against the judiciary at Cairo's High Court. The demonstration was called for by the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party and other Islamist forces. Violent clashes broke out between the Islamist protesters and unknown opponents, largely consisting of an exchange of rock throwing. Ahram Online did, however, capture footage of two men on the Islamists side using firearms. Police eventually intervened in the clashes. Footage shows the police talking with protesters on the Islamist side of the clashes, and firing towards their opponents. The video also shows at least two men who were caught by the Islamist protesters and severely beaten in full view of the police. &amp;nbsp;</description>

<media:text>Thousands of Egyptians have taken to Cairo's Tahrir Square to demand the overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi. Demonstrators have also carried their protest to the doors of the presidential palace. As many as 65 people have been killed in violent clashes since January 25, prompting the head of the army to declare the state is on the verge of collapse. Those opposed to the government are furious with the new constitution drawn up since Morsi came to power after Hosni Mubarak was ousted two years ago: &quot; We're demonstrating today because we haven't seen the realization of any of the aims of the revolution. We call again for the regime to fall, what we see in this regime is a continuation of the previous system,&quot; screamed one Cairene. Women were out on the streets in numbers. &quot; There is no human rights in this constitution for women. There is no education, there is no health insurance for anyone,&quot; said one. In Port Said people marked the first anniversary of a soccer stadium riot that left 70 people dead. Last Saturday's court verdict that condemned 21 of the city's residents to death led to clashes between police and protesters where dozens were killed. A curfew and emergency rule imposed on the city has further fuelled local resentment. </media:text>

<media:text>Police in Alexandria have fired teargas rounds at Islamist supporters of Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi. The confrontation comes on the eve of a divisive referendum on the new draft constitution. The Muslim Brotherhood called the rally to decry the violence between Islamists and secular Egyptians last week. A well-known conservative Muslim preacher was trapped in his mosque for 14 hours as rivals attacked one another with clubs and swords. Sheik Ahmed el-Mahalawi denounced opponents of the new constitution as &quot;followers of heretics.&quot; On the streets opinion is polarized. &quot; This one million man demo today is to say &quot;yes&quot; to the constitution. Secondly it is to show the value of mosques and teachers for Muslims. What happened last Friday, attacking the mosque, is not accepted by Muslims and non-Muslims,&quot; said one man. Across Egypt preparations are underway for the second part of the referendum. The 'Yes' campaign narrowly won the first vote on December 15. Those opposed to the president believe the draft constitution is pro-Muslim and fails to protect the rights of all Egyptians. The constitution must be in place before elections can go ahead within two months, but the bill has exacerbated the split between Islamists and secular groupings. The country has been in a state of chaos since Mubarak was disposed in February 2011.</media:text>

<media:text>Egypt's military is once again playing a more active role since handing over power in June, with President Mohammed Morsi giving them the authority to arrest civilians. The military has been told to coordinate with police in order to keep the peace during the country's constitutional referendum, due to take place on Saturday. The draft referendum has sparked days of protests. Demonstrators complain the proposed referendum, which was largely put together by Morsi's Islamist allies, undermines human rights, the rights of women and religious minorities, and curtails the independence of the judiciary. Protesters are also unsatisfied with the president's latest declaration, reversing the wide-ranging powers Morsi gave himself. From outside the presidential palace in Cairo, protester Hesham Ezat said: &quot; The new constitutional declaration cancelled the first one, but at the same time, it contained the same statements as the previous one. He is playing with us and trying to gain time until the referendum.&quot; Morsi is being accused of already using the powers to push through the draft constitution. Protesters may be even angrier about the military getting more powers - no matter how temporary.</media:text>
