<description>With elections coming up in Israel, politicians are focusing their campaigns on what they believe Israelis care most about - the economy. The economy has been described as Prime Minister Netanyahu's achilles heel, but is it enough of an issue to give left-wing parties a boost?</description>

<media:text>After a repressive history, Uruguay's left-wing government is paving the way for a new generation of digital-savvy, globalized nationals by being the first country to give every child their own laptop.

----

Ex-guerilla fighter, Jose Mujica, has been in office since 2010. He has never given up his ideals of social justice. The aim of the ambitious 'A laptop per child' program is to help close the divide between rich and poor, and between developed and developing countries. Many parents and teachers were initially skeptical; years without proper social policies still shape life in the slums.&quot;I don't want to know anything about computers. It is a child who knows something about computers and technology that throws bombs.&quot; Yet despite early skepticism, the program is now being widely embraced. &quot; We need to educate the children differently so that they understand the world of today.&quot;</media:text>

<media:text>Clashes between police and protesters opposed to a US company's plans to build a five billion US dollar gold mine in Peru. Four people have died in the last two days as the protests turned violent. Seen here, left-wing leader Marco Arana, a soft-spoken former Roman Catholic priest who has rallied demonstrators to stop construction of the mine, said he was beaten by police as they arrested him. Arana's critics blame him for inciting violence at a rally on Tuesday where protesters threw rocks and vandalized public buildings. Critics of President Ollanta Humala, however, say the government and police forces have suspended the freedom of assembly. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Oscar Valdes announced a 30-day state of emergency for the country. The Humala government says the mine would generate thousands of jobs and huge tax revenues. Protesters say it would cause pollution, contaminate water supplies and fail to bring local economic benefits.</media:text>

<media:text>Greek voters go to the polls for the second round of a general election on Sunday. The country is voting for a new government, and the choices appear stark. A vote for left-leaning Syriza party -- led by Alexis Tsipras -- would cancel the international bailout deal, a move that could force Greece to leave the euro. But a vote for the conservative, pro-euro party New Democracy -- led by Antonis Samaras -- would likely keep Greece in the single currency but at the cost of massive, painful austerity measures. Al Jazeera's Tim Friend reports from Athens.</media:text>
