<description>As the conflict in Syria continues to escalate, it is increasingly spilling over into neighboring countries. Lebanese villagers near the border with Syria have formed armed militia groups to patrol the outskirts of their areas. They claim their villages are being attacked and residents kidnapped or killed. Meanwhile, elements from the Free Syrian Army threatened to attack Hezbollah sites in Lebanon, saying it is in response to the group sending fighters to join Syrian regime forces. </description>

        <link>http://news.linktv.org/videos/mixed-messages-reveal-divisions-within-free-syrian-army?start=0</link>
<description>The Free Syrian Army has disowned an earlier statement in which it had apparently vowed to attack Hezbollah in Lebanon. The original threat of force was made over accusations that Iranian-backed Hezbollah is working alongside government forces in Syria - a claim that has yet to be independently confirmed. What seems more clear is that the Free Syrian Army's contradictory declarations reveal its continuing failure to act as a unified fighting force. New TV reports.</description>

In Lebanon, and specifically in the northern city of Tripoli, clashes erupted between the areas of Bab al-Tabbaneh that opposes the Syrian regime, and Jabal Mohsen that supports it, with residents exchanging gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades. This led to the killing of one person and injury of 23 others, according to a Lebanese security official. The clashes continued sporadically throughout the night before the Lebanese army restored calm to the city. The Lebanese army said that its members responded to the fire of military weapons that was exchanged between the gunmen, and conducted patrols in the neighborhoods of the region to arrest the gunmen and restore normalcy to the area.

Presenter, Male #1
Joining us from Tripoli over the phone is our correspondent Eliane Chatery. Eliane, how would you describe the situation in Tripoli following the clashes that occurred yesterday between the supporters and opponents of the Syrian regime?

Correspondent, Female #1 (Eliane Chatery, Dubai TV Correspondent in Tripoli)
After relative calm this morning, it seems that clashes have made a comeback, and were renewed about an hour ago with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades. Sniper fire continued the whole day between the area of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.

Correspondent, Female #1
The preliminary and unofficial death toll rose to three, with more than 20 injuries. Among them are nine injured soldiers from the Lebanese army: four from yesterday and five today, including an officer, after a Lebanese army station was targeted with a bomb, which led to the injury of those five, including an officer, as mentioned. The Lebanese army issued a statement this morning saying it is conducting military operations, meaning it is raiding the gunmen's areas, and is also conducting an arrest campaign. In addition it is also directly responding to the clashes to foil them. But this has not prevented a violent renewal of the clashes about an hour ago, as mentioned.

Presenter, Male #1
Eliane, is the situation headed more towards containment or an escalation?

Correspondent, Female #1
In reality, it was not surprising that the clashes resumed between the areas of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen because of the many known factors. There is an attempt to contain the situation, but everyone knows that political calls alone are not enough, and that the Lebanese army's intervention is never enough. We need many political calls and a political umbrella so that the Lebanese army can intensify its deployment, alongside the security forces, until calm is restored. And even this solution cannot guarantee calm will be restored to this area; a drastic political solution is needed.

Presenter, Male #1
Eliane Chatery, our correspondent from Tripoli, thank you.</media:text>

In response to the kidnapping of Lebanese citizen Hassan al-Moqdad in Syria, the military wing of the al-Moqdad clan kidnapped a number of Syrians in Lebanon, saying they are members of the Free Syrian Army. It confirmed that kidnappings will be ongoing until their son is released. Al-Moqdad's military wing also warned the Free Syrian Army of surprises in the next few hours if kidnapped Hassan al-Moqdad is not freed.

Guest, Male #1 (Spokesman for al-Moqdad's Military Wing)
Hassan is a man known to the entire world. He is a peaceful man, and like his family said, he doesn't know how to use a hunting rifle. We have documents showing that he is in Syria. The reason behind his visit to Syria is financial and judicial, but this is irrelevant.

Guest, Male #1
It's true that we are the military wing, but this is not all of us. We came here today to send a message. We are not threatening anyone. You, the Free Army, are holding one of our people. You need to fight the regime with dignity. You have no business with us, and we have no business with you. This has to do with Hassan Salim al-Moqdad.

Reporter, Male #2
The Moqdad family laid down its conditions, and as soon as the 24-hour deadline expired, what was called the military wing of the Lebanese clan went to the media. And in the same fashion as the Free Syrian Army, it released a video showing the clan's flag, with gunmen questioning kidnapped members of the Free Army.

Guest, Male #3 (Mohammad, Free Syrian Army Captain)
My name is Mohammad Mousa Issa. I'm from Daraa. I'm from the Karak area. I work for the Free Syrian Army. I am a captain. I mainly provide the Free Syrian Army members and weapons.

Reporter, Male #2
Every Syrian in Lebanon is assumed innocent by the al-Moqdad family, but it plans to escalate its actions, threatening that the kidnappings will continue until Hassan al-Moqdad is released. And so far, they have continued, and the clan is now being supported by the Zeaiter, Jaafar, and Shams clans, and other Beqaa Valley clans.

Guest, Male #4 (Brother of Hassan al-Moqdad)
We started by giving them 24 hours. We started our work, and we will continue whether it's one day, one week, or one month, and whether we keep one thousand, two thousand, three thousand, or ten thousand detainees. We have no problem. We're focusing on Hassan now, but we might have a different goal later.

Reporter, Male #2
Development and Liberation bloc Member of Parliament Ghazi Zeaiter visited the Moqdad association, saying he came to stand in solidarity with his cousins, viewing the incident as a reaction to the events in Syria, and the kidnappings by those he described as the sabotaging criminal army, the Free Syrian Army.</media:text>

Lebanon's Military Tribunal adjourned the hearing of former minister Michel Samaha to an unspecified date. Samaha's lawyer expressed hope in maintaining the judicial path away from political pressure.

Presenter, Male #1
Defense lawyer Malek Sayyed considered the leaks of Samaha's interrogation as very harmful to the investigation. Al-Sayyad confirmed that the Lebanese minister of justice has vowed to investigate how these leaks occurred. The defense lawyer refused to answer if Samaha was subjected to pressure during his interrogation.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced that the judiciary will continue to investigate the case of former Information Minister Michel Samaha until it is resolved.

Presenter, Male #1
Mikati confirmed that following the investigation, he will take a political stance and decision that would maintain Lebanon's sovereignty.

Reporter, Female #2
The case is no longer merely about the arrest of Minister Michel Samaha. The military judge's indictment includes the Syrian security regime for the very first time. This development has confused the authorities, that have been holding on to a policy of disassociation since the beginning of the Syrian crisis. The prime minister says this policy is based on the principle of non-interference in the affairs of others. For this reason, he says, it is unacceptable for others to intervene in Lebanon's affairs, or turn the country into a field to settle scores and export crises.

Reporter, Female #2
As for the recent developments of the case, a mobilization has started demanding a wider investigation, since the explosive devices that were confiscated are reportedly very similar to those used in the assassinations of Samir Kassir and George Hawi, and the attempted assassination of broadcast journalist May Chidiac, according to the an-Nahar newspaper. In the same framework, the March 14 Coalition mobilized its forces to demand the authorities to take stringent measures.

Guest, Male #2
The Syrian ambassador in Lebanon must quickly be expelled, and diplomatic relations with this regime must be temporarily frozen. A complaint must also be filed at the UN to reveal these facts.

Reporter, Female #2
As for the March 8 Coalition, it has refrained from commenting on the issue, and is waiting for the results of the investigation, with the exception of a symbolic protest held in front of the Military Tribunal. Some of Samaha's supporters organized the protest, but sources close to the March 8 Coalition indicated that a media escalation will serve neither the enemies of the regime here, nor its allies.

Guest, Male #3
They placed all these issues in the same framework. This does not serve anyone, and does not serve the truth. This serves a plan that is much bigger than Michel Samaha and much bigger than Wissam Hassan, will all due respect to both of them. And it is much bigger than the entire Lebanese game. There is a grand plan for the region.

Reporter, Female #2
The authorities say the leaks related to this case are dangerous, but what could later be revealed in the investigation might be even more dangerous. As for the repercussions, they are certainly larger than a mere settling of local accounts.</media:text>

The arrest of former minister Michel Samaha has preoccupied the Lebanese since the news was reported, in light of the role he's played over the years. Samaha has recently played a leading role in the defense of the Assad regime, and has advised Bashar al-Assad on many Lebanese and foreign issues.

Presenter, Female #1
So how was he arrested? And how did the raid lead to the arrest of his driver who was involved in the transportation of explosives? Rabih Shantaff reports.

Presenter, Male #1
This is the home of former minister Michel Samaha in the northern Metn town of Jwar al-Khanchara. The Lebanese Internal Security Forces branch of information, and military forces raided this house to arrest Samaha under the orders of acting-state Prosecutor General Samir Hammoud.

Presenter, Male #1
Samaha's driver, Fares Barakat, was also detained. Following Samaha's arrest, his homes in al-Khanchara and al-Achrafiyeh were searched, and two cars, computers, DVDs, CDs, and a cell phone were confiscated. According to security information, fully-equipped explosive devices and remote bombs were found but the location of the explosives was not specified since the investigation is still ongoing. The investigation revolves around Samaha's possible involvement in past explosions in a number of areas, and others currently planned, specifically in the region of Akkar.

Guest, Female #2 (Gladys Samaha, Wife of Former Minister Michel Samaha)
They want it to be lawful, let it be lawful. They have to tell us why he was arrested. He has many lawyers, but we have to know what this is about so we can assign a lawyer. We don't know what this is about! We don't. Of course this is political, and not just because of al-Assad. Michel Samaha represents a red line in the country.

Reporter, Male #2
Judge Hammoud indicated that he looked into ongoing investigations with the detained Michel Samaha after the latter was transferred to the branch of information, saying that Samaha is in good health after receiving confirmation from a medical examiner and an Internal Security Forces doctor. He added that Samaha is testifying freely, and that the investigation is ongoing, while no final decision was taken over the arrest of those who were summoned. Legally, Samaha can be held for 96 hours. Then, he must be charged or released.

Reporter, Male #2
Security sources informed Future News that the manner in which Samaha was detained indicates that he committed a grave offense, and that there is strong suspicious of his involvement in this case. From in front of the home of former minister Michel Samaha, Rabih Shantaff, Future News.</media:text>

A cautious calm returned this morning to the Lebanese capital Beirut, following overnight armed clashes that erupted between supporters and opponents of the Syrian regime. Two people were killed and 18 others were wounded in the clashes. Tension is rising across various Lebanese regions, following the death of a religious cleric by the army, in the northern Lebanese region of Akkar. In response, several political groups called for a truce and warned against what they described as &quot;acts of sectarian strife.&quot; Iliam Shatri reports from Beirut.

Reporter, Female #2
A cautious calm is dominating the Tariq Jadidah district in the Lebanese capital, after a night full of clashes that ended with the Lebanese army's deployment. The district of Beirut woke up this morning to scenes of destruction, property damage, and causalities, amid chaos and fear of renewed tension.

Guest, Male #1
Unfortunately, there's no more talk. What you see here on the ground is what you get.

Guest, Male #2
There's tension on the ground, but we need to believe that we can end this tension.

Guest, Male #3
A good citizen is a citizen who remains calm. However, there will come a time when he has to break his silence.

Reporter, Female #2
As for the night in Beirut, this is how it appeared. Armed confrontations erupted between supporters and opponents of the Syrian regime. The angry crowd closed city streets with burning tires and barriers in protest over the killing of a religious cleric and his companion at a Lebanese army's checkpoint in the northern Akkar region. The incident sparked a wave of indignation and tension across various Lebanese regions. In response, several political leaders called for self-restraint, in a bid to avert dragging the country into strife.

Reporter, Female #2
This is the first time in a long time that both sides of the Lebanese conflict agree on the importance of restoring calm and upholding civil peace. However, it remains to be seen whether the tensed street will respond to the call issued by its leadership, especially amid the unfolding developments in Syria, which Lebanon is trying to distance itself from.

Guest, Male #4 (George Alam, Writer and Political Analyst)
It's not in any Lebanese group's interest to see a civil war in the country. Unfortunately, the Lebanese front is being infiltrated by foreign intelligence. Perhaps, certain foreign groups may benefit from dragging Lebanon into strife. There is a reason to point the finger abroad. The leadership is keen to solve this problem.

Reporter, Female #2
From Tripoli, which is still healing from its wounds, to Akkar, where confrontations erupted in the Tariq Jadidah district, Lebanon is facing the challenge of managing to distance itself from the developments in Syria. Is there a plot to drag Lebanon into chaos? Many questions are being raised. And the answers to these questions hinge on the unfolding developments on the ground. From Tariq Jadidah, Iliam Shatri, Dubai TV, Beirut.

Presenter, Female #1
North Lebanon was not much different. Today, the residents of Akkar will hold a funeral procession for religious cleric Sheikh Ahmed Abed al-Wahed and his companion, Mohamed al-Mireb, who were killed yesterday at a Lebanese army checkpoint. A general strike and a state of tension are dominating the northern Lebanese region, despite the call for truce by several members of the government and opposition. The army said it launched an investigation into the incident. In response, the residents rejected the army's intervention in the case. On the ground, the army was able to reopen the streets in Tripoli, Akkar, al-Biqaa, and the coastal road connecting Beirut with the South, which protestors blocked with burning tires.</media:text>

In Lebanon, sporadic clashes and sniper operations in the districts of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen reflect the fragile ceasefire reached Monday morning, amid fears that the conflict may turn into an open battlefront linked to the situation in Syria. Meanwhile, Malik al-Shaar, the Grand Mufti of Tripoli and the North, said that Hezbollah has something to do with what's happening in the city.

Reporter, Female #2
Traffic has come to a complete stop across Tripoli's neighborhoods and the districts of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen. The renewed clashes indicate that the ceasefire announced Monday morning was nothing more than a temporary truce, warning that a battlefront could emerge at any time amid the political impasse seen in the city.

Guest, Male #1 (Malik al-Shaar, Mufti of Tripoli and the North)
What's happening in Tripoli is the outcome of several issues, most notably the political impasse seen in the country. And because Tripoli is a diverse city that's run by a weak administration, it's more vulnerable than other areas to such a breach. What's happening in Tripoli is not separate from what's happening in Syria.

Reporter, Female #2
However, what's notable about the remarks given by the Mufti of Tripoli and North Lebanon is that he accused Hezbollah, for the first time, of being connected to the recent incidents in Tripoli.

Guest, Male #1 (Malik al-Shaar, Mufti of Tripoli and the North)
I have a feeling that most of what's happening in the North has something to do with Hezbollah. I found out that large shipments of ammunition and arms, as well as stockpiles of weapons, are being stored in the North.

Reporter, Female #2
It seems that activist groups in the city of Tripoli were not surprised by this major violation of the truce that was achieved on Monday morning. However, one of the main questions being raised here in Tripoli is: Why did security forces fail to bring the situation under control? The Lebanese army, which has been deployed to the city of Tripoli, didn't enter the residential neighborhoods witnessing clashes. Instead, the army positioned and deployed military patrols throughout the main neighborhoods.

Guest, Male #2 (Marwan Charbel, Lebanese Interior Minister)
We didn't deal with them in a harsh way, though it was necessary. Slowly but surely, we will have positive results. The situation gets better by the day. Anyone who opens fire will be identified and will be served an arrest warrant. The overall situation in the country is reflected in the situation in Tripoli. We hope to bring the situation back to normal within a maximum of one week.

Reporter, Female #2
While waiting for the one week deadline, the situation on the ground seems to oscillate between the truce efforts and the possible collapse of the ceasefire.</media:text>

Amid the raging tension, the return to the Abed al-Hamid Karami Square, and the meeting at the home of Mohamed Kabara, the day in the Lebanese north was filled with events.

For the second consecutive day, tension is running high in Tripoli, following the arrest of Shadi al-Mawlawi. Al-Mawlawi's arrest sparked violent clashes in the Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen neighborhoods in Tripoli, where roads were cutoff and traffic was halted. Five people were injured in the fierce clashes that erupted Sunday night and continued into Monday morning, especially in the area of Mankubin and Jabal Mohsen. Street battles and skirmishes spread to other regions, most notably al-Baqar and al-Malula. A rocket-propelled grenade was fired at an all girls' school in the area of al-Zahriyah. More than 50 people were injured and transported to city hospitals. It was very difficult for ambulances to reach some of the victims due to the intensity of fighting.

For its part, the Lebanese army reinforced its presence in areas overlooking Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen. However, the army was unable to put an end to the sporadic clashes that lasted throughout the day. One resident from al-Rashed tribe was killed in today's violence.

Politically, a meeting was held at the home of Member of Parliament, Mohamed Kabara. Among the participants were Ahmed Karami, who represented Prime Minister Najib Miqati, and Ahmad al-Safadi who represented Minister al-Safadi as well as other local legislators. MP Muen al-Almaribi walked out of the meeting and held the army responsible for the security breach due to its slow response.

Guest, Male #2 (Muen al-Almaribi, Future Parliamentary Bloc Member)
Unfortunately, the army has not yet been deployed. The army doesn't want to make a plan or accept our proposed plan. It doesn't want to mobilize without a political cover. Therefore, we hold the army fully responsible for this breach.

Guest, Male #3 (Mohamed Kabara, MP)
It's a political conspiracy being hatched against the city of Tripoli. The High Defense Council, which convened under the auspices of the president of the republic, is conspiring against the city of Tripoli. I demand the political authority, led by the prime minister, to either take responsible action or step down.

Reporter, Male #1
The political mobilization launched during the early afternoon hours has failed to secure the release of al-Mawlawi. This prompted members of the Islamist movement to return to the square and cut off the roads.

Guest, Male #4 (Dai al-Islam al-Shahal, Founder of Salafi Movement in Lebanon)
If they want justice then they must treat everyone equally, and without prejudice or favoritism. They also need to find an immediate solution to this problem.

Guest, Male #5 (Omar Bakri al-Fustuk, Leader of Salafi Movement in North)
They made a mistake by arresting him. His arrest was illegal and illegitimate. They must take responsible action and release him. Otherwise, the situation will escalate.

Reporter, Male #1
The situation in Tripoli is back to square one, after all options were exhausted, which sparked a new wave of violence in a city, best known as capital of the north. From the city of Tripoli, Ramzi al-Qadi, New TV.</media:text>

Future TV obtained video clips that show members of the Islamic Tawhid or Unification movement opening gunfire at protestors supporting the Syrian people this past Sunday. Four people were injured in the attack. Omar Harb reports.

Reporter, Male #2
Songs of the Syrian Revolution echoed in the peaceful march in Abu Samra area in Tripoli, Lebanon. These songs denouncing the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad were not appreciated by members of the Islamic Tawhid movement. They quickly mobilized, and began provoking the protestors by taking pictures of their faces and threatening to send them to the Syrian regime.

Reporter, Male #2
The person in this video wearing white pants and a blue shirt is from Beit al-Agha. He was the first to open fire on the demonstration, as he cursed at one of the motorcycle drivers and then shot him with a pistol in his hand. This person was arrested by security forces after they watched the video. The brother of this gunman is called Ibn al-Lam'a. He also took part by opening fire at the demonstration, as shown in these images. As for Hussein Zaydan, wearing a red shirt, he opened fire at the back of a young man riding a motorcycle.

Reporter, Male #2
These video clips show the attempts of the Syrian regime's allies in Lebanon to stir up trouble on the internal front. They also come as a response to the Islamic Tawhid movement, headed by Sheikh Bilal Shaaban, which denied that its members carried out the attacks on the peaceful protestors.

Presenter, Female #1
Commenting on the report aired on Future News, The Islamic Tawhid movement said this was an isolated incident. According to the statement issued by the movement, the gunfire was not opened by its members, and the source of gunfire was far from its headquarters.

Residents of the town of al-Qaa in the Beqaa Valley appealed to the Lebanese government not to distance itself from their lives and their properties.

Reporter, Female #2
Nearly 24 hours later, the Radi family returned to their house in Mashari'a al-Qaa after having been displaced, and this is what they found. It looks as though war passed through here, while it hadn't. A few soldiers from the Syrian forces penetrated the Lebanese territory. They opened fire and launched rocket-propelled grenades at an opponent that remains unknown.

Guest, Male #1
The Syrian army entered our homes and started to fire mortar shells, and they fired at the homes and damaged them. They displaced us from our homes; we fled, we ran away.

Reporter, Female #2
They entered dozens of houses and damaged them. Their humanity did not prevent them from destroying a room that housed Syrian refugees, or a vehicle carrying wounded Syrians to Lebanon for treatment. They stole whatever they were able to steal, and destroyed whatever their hands and rifles could reach. They even stole water pipes and threw them in the garden.

Reporter, Female #2
Cautious calm dominates the scene, while citizens continue to live in fear. These residents were forcibly displaced to surrounding groves and their relatives' homes. Their resentment is mostly directed at the Lebanese government, and the question, &quot;Where is the government?&quot; is no longer a satirical saying.

Guest, Male #2
The Syrian army entered 500 meters into the Lebanese territory. If they have a revolution, if they have a revolution, then Syrians must work on it between each other. We, the Lebanese, can only provide humanitarian aid, nothing else. Humanitarian work is our duty, but that's it. I tell you, the situation is extremely tragic, tragic, because of the shelling and the arbitrary gunfire. So we had to flee because we're near the border, while we're inside Lebanon.

Reporter, Female #2
Assad's brigades, who have not found anyone to deter them from undermining Lebanon's sovereignty, felt no shame to occupy some houses, which were used by snipers to control the entire area. Even fleeing to Lebanon is no longer safe. For these refugees staying in shelters that lack life's most basic necessities, security has become increasingly elusive. They turn their faces away from the camera, while their children still have tiny hopes and dreams because of their youth.

Guest, Male #3
We ran away from death and we came here. It's better than dying in Syria.

Reporter, Female #2
When are you returning to Syria?

Guest, Male #3
When the situation is calm.

Reporter, Female #2
Here, a rocket fell. And here, Russian-produced shrapnel. And at this exact spot, the Lebanese government is completely absent. The residents of these villages call them &quot;the empty quarters,&quot; because those who are supposed to guard and guarantee their security are nowhere to be seen. These bullets refute claims made by those who deny Lebanese sovereignty was undermined, sovereignty that is now based on a mere opinion. When sovereignty is breached in the south, wars break out; once it's breached in the north and east, denial is the response. From the border town al-Qaa, Darine al-Hilweh, Future TV.

Injured Syrians continue to enter Lebanon through its northeastern border.
New TV's crew visited the refugees, and my colleague Ramiz al-Qadi reports.

Reporter, Male #1
As the crisis escalates in Syria, the number of refugees fleeing to Lebanon is rising. According to figures released by municipalities, their number has doubled in less than two weeks, reaching 2,000. They are spread across the northeastern border in al-Qa'a and Arsal. The trip there requires passing through a number of military checkpoints reinforced by the army with additional military units, preventing any member of what is known as the Free Syrian Army from crossing the border under the pretense of being a refugee. As for humanitarian aid, the High Relief Commission did not pass through here, and aid is only coming from certain groups and the residents of the region. The refugees of Syrian villages bordering Lebanon are still close to the flames of the Syrian crisis. These refugees are enduring a daily humanitarian crisis that they hope will soon end, as they watch white smoke rising.

Reporter, Male #1
Most refugees came from villages bordering Homs, especially al-Qusayr and al-Jousi; they say they fled the regime's persecution.

Guest, Male #2
The situation is very tragic. We plead for the Lebanese government to help these displaced poor people who are in need.

Reporter, Male #1
Refugees are not the only ones crossing the border. 12 injured Syrians entered Sunday night, and were transferred by the Lebanese Red Cross to hospitals in the north. Children always share crises. They only know the slogans that are chanted by adults, which become their favorite songs.

The tragic reality of these refugees forces at least three or four families to share one tent near the border to escape the cold and wait for the dream of return. From the Lebanese-Syrian border, Ramiz al-Qadi, New TV.

Syrian dissidents said the Syrian army and security forces carried out a raid campaign in various areas of the countryside of Damascus, adding that heavy gunfire from armored vehicles struck houses in the city of Busra al-Hariri in Dara'a province. This comes as government forces in Syria intensified their siege on al-Rastan and al-Qasir in Homs province amid continuous artillery shelling of the two cites, in which members of the Free Syrian Army are entrenched.

Reporter, Male #2
The cycle of violence and counter-violence in Syria is still at its worst level. This video shows what opposition sources say is shelling with heavy weapons by units of the regime's army. Their target is the town of Jub al-Jandali near Homs city in central Syria. The images show what seems to be clashes on the streets of the town between government forces and armed opposition members. Amateurs uploaded these videos online showing what they said is the aftermath of the shelling of some neighborhoods in al-Hirak city of Dara'a province by the regime forces. The escalating violence coincided with the continued defections of dozens of soldiers and officers from the regime's army.

Guest, Male #3
We, a group of officers and soldiers, have defected from this criminal army and formed the brigade of &quot;al-Nassir Salah ad-Din&quot; in Jabal al-Zawiya to protect and defend our unarmed people.

Reporter, Male #2
Syria's state-run TV displayed these weapons and ammunition, as well as corridors and tunnels, saying they were discovered in the Baba Amr neighborhood of Homs, accusing what it referred to as terrorists of using them to terrorize the neighborhood's residents. The official Syrian TV also aired images of what it said are operations to clean the rubble from the alleys of the neighborhood, in anticipation of restoring normalcy to life in the city. It added that a number of residents have started returning to their homes. However, Syrian forces shelled a main bridge used by the injured and refugees to cross into Lebanon, as well as other minor passageways, which are also difficult and dangerous to cross.

Guest, Male #4
The shelling of fleeing residents was indiscriminate; they were deployed near the border, and people started losing each other. The Lebanese army also started to randomly arrest people on the border.

The suffering of Syrian refugees fleeing to Lebanon, and other neighboring countries continues to exacerbate the situation, prompting Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyib Erdogan to demand the Syrian regime immediately open humanitarian corridors for the victims of the violence.

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said US President Barack Obama remains committed to exerting diplomatic efforts to end the violence in Syria. He added that Obama repeatedly called for an immediate halt to the violence in Syria, indicating the US administration is currently focused on diplomatic and political approaches, rather than a military intervention. He confirmed that Washington considers isolating the regime, and cutting off its key sources of income, to be the best chance to usher in a political transition in Syria. He indicated that Washington supports efforts to unite the Syrian opposition within the framework of a clear transition plan that makes space for Syrians of all creeds and ethnicities.</media:text>

Some defectors from Syria's intelligence agencies revealed information they have on Lebanese detainees in Syria, including a Phalange official, Boutros Khawand. The information circulating in media networks drew the attention of the kidnapped man's family members, who can only hope for the best. Susan Dawouq reports.

Reporter, Female #2
News reports circulated information on Lebanese citizens kidnapped and detained in Syria. This information was revealed by defectors from Syria's intelligence, especially those who worked in its Palestinian branch, a security agency in charge of capturing &quot;anti-regime&quot; dissidents. The reports included the member of the Phalange party's political bureau Boutros Khawand, who was abducted near a checkpoint set up by the Syrian forces in Sin el-Fil. His wife, Janette Khawand revives their memories together through his pictures, hoping the Foreign Ministry will take action on the matter.

Guest, Female #3 (Janette Khawand, wife of Boutros Khawand Detained in Syria)
We have old information confirming that Boutros is there. New information emerged confirming that Boutros is indeed in a Syrian prison.

Reporter, Female #2
Is he being held at the Palestinian branch?

Guest, Female #3 (Janette Khawand, wife of Boutros Khawand detained in Syria)
He was moved to several branches. The last branch was Tudmar. I don't know where he is now. They might have moved him again.

Reporter, Female #2
You contacted President Gemayel, what was the answer from the Phalanges?

Guest, Female #3 (Janet Khawand, wife of Boutros Khawand detained in Syria)
They told us they are investigating the matter. The Foreign Ministry formed a committee that was sent to Libya to look for missing leader Musa al-Sadr. They also did their best to bring back the detained Lebanese in Israeli prisons. Some of them came back in body bags. They must form a Lebanese committee to look for the detainees held in Syrian jails.

Reporter, Female #2
Boutros' son Rabi'a Khawand says they are putting their hopes on changes in Syria because President Bashar al-Assad's regime has not provided them any information about his father.

Guest, Male #1 (Rabi'a Khawand, son of Boutros Khawand)
As far as the situation in Syria is concerned, I hope that it will be on the path of change, which makes us more hopeful. God willing, he will be fine and he will return safely.

Lebanese Tony Riyashi was kidnapped on August 31, 1985, on his way to the airport. His wife Rabi'ah shows this picture of him, in which their son Hadi was only one year old. Today, the son is 26 years old and the family is still hoping for the return of the man of the house.

Guest, Female #4 (Rabi'ah Riyashi, wife of detainee Tony Riyashi)
I was hoping they would have informed us before making an announcement on television about the case.

Reporter, Female #1
Did you contact any officials about the case?

Guest, Female #4
It's still unclear. In the past, when we would ask for information we would have to pay to receive it. The Lebanese state must take serious action.

Reporter, Female #2
This is not the first time information is revealed about Lebanese citizens kidnapped in Syria. However, inaccurate information, though considered good news, only generates confusion and concern.

Lebanese detainees in Syrian prisons are forgotten by the state, which has dealt with them, and continues to deal with them on the basis of &quot;God forgives what has past.&quot; My colleague Firas Hatoum reports.

This report was supposed to be broadcast before Eid ul-Fitr but we chose to wait until receiving a complete response from official and relevant institutions. However, after these institutions delayed in providing a response, probably because they are in the dark or maybe because they're not, we decided to show it anyway. We note that their right to respond and clarify is ensured at all times. While some are still hopeful, others are disappointed. At a crucial moment six years ago when the Syrian army withdrew from Lebanon, the families of detainees held in the prisons of the brotherly nation thought the prison doors would open for those who had been locked behind them for decades. However, Damascus disappointed the mothers and fathers, the daughters and the sons. In its relations with Lebanon, Damascus ignored the detainees' files, considering that the time had passed and a new era had begun and &quot;God forgives what has past&quot;. That's fine, but what about the detainees of the new era? What about the Lebanese who were locked behind Syrian prison doors after 2005, and who are still behind bars today. From the dark room of cell number 202, Ahmed al-Abdullah made his own ink and wrote to his wife, who passed away while he was detained. He said, &quot; To the one whose existence made me love life and whose absence shattered my world, the one whose fate changed but remains immortal in my heart even if my blood dries.&quot; The mother left her children with no hope of return, leaving them to wage their struggle on their own: the struggle of waiting.

I ask the world, one of the Lebanese rulers to help me. I would like to tell my dad that I miss him and I would have liked to spend the Eid with you.

The state insists the Lebanese detainees do no exist but they do indeed exist and the proof lies in their names, photos, and fingerprints. And these visit permits and letters from Damascus central prison are the mere tip of an iceberg of evidence presented exclusively by New TV. Many letters were sent by prisoners to the ambassador but none have received a response. However, the prison's administration warned its Lebanese detainees not to repeat the same demands.

Syrians told us that the Lebanese state is not even asking for them. The day before yesterday, the Syrian attorney-general visited them in prison and told them their own state is supposed to ask for them. The minister of justice should make a request but there hasn't been a single demand.

According to the list written by prisoners, the number of political detainees is at least 12.
