Human rights and civil society organizations warned of deteriorating conditions inside Israeli prisons, as tension is running high among prisoners in Israel's Ramon Prison due to punitive measures carried out by the Prison Administration in cooperation with Israeli special forces.

Reporter, Male #1
The Palestinian Prisoners' Society confirmed that the Israeli court issued an administrative arrest warrant for detainee Samer al-Barq for an additional three months. Al-Barq continues his hunger strike for the 100th consecutive day.

Reporter, Female #2
Palestinian warnings of an explosive situation inside Israeli prisons were issued this time due to the tension in the Israeli Ramon Prison. This tension was created after 100 prisoners were transferred to another prison as collective punishment, and others were held in solitary confinement. In addition, special forces are being kept inside sections of the prison.

Reporter, Female #2
The tension is heightened by fears for the life of prisoner Samer al-Barq, who is now on his 100th day of hunger strike. In a first in decades, a statement was issued by prisoner Zahran Zedat from the Negev Prison, demanding to file a lawsuit at the Israeli High Court of Justice against intelligence officers who tortured him when he was arrested in 2004.

Guest, Male #2 (Helmi Araj, Centre for Defense of Liberties and Civil Rights)
He was subjected to all forms of psychological and physical torture, and to a serious rape attempt by three soldiers, who entered his solitary cell. They were trying to blackmail him into confessing. They threatened to bring in his family and rape them, including his wife. This is not easy for a prisoner to talk about, but this is what happened.

Reporter, Female #2
Zahran Zedat confirms the lawsuit was filed to protect male and female prisoners, to protect them from the various types of abuses they endure, the latest of which is arresting again individuals released in the Egyptian-mediated prisoner swap deal between the Hamas movement and Israel months ago.

Guest, Male #3 (Abdel Rahim Maluh, Palestine Liberation Organization, Executive Committee Member)
The Egyptians must positively intervene to release the prisoners, and particularly those who were just released through the Shalit deal, and the prisoners who are on hunger strike, especially since the prisons and the Palestinian people are very tense right now.

Reporter, Female #2
The Israeli occupation forces do not even allow Palestinians to express solidarity with their prisoners. At the Ofer military prison, soldiers used rubber bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas to suppress the demonstrators and the media following protests in solidarity with the prisoners.

Reporter, Female #2
The case of the prisoners, the case that is absent from the international arena, and present on Palestinian minds, is a case that carries the dark fingerprints of the occupation's policies. An occupation that will seemingly continue to consider itself above any law.</media:text>

Israeli occupation authorities allowed a limited number of relatives of Palestinian prisoners from the Gaza Strip to visit their children for the first time in seven years.

Presenter, Male #1
The International Committee of the Red Cross transported dozens of the prisoners' relatives to Ramon Prison in the Negev Desert, where their children are languishing. The visit is the first in over seven years.

Presenter, Female #1
The visit comes in accordance with an agreement between the Israeli Prison Service and the prisoners to end their last hunger strike.

Reporter, Male #2
This woman is counting down the minutes and seconds to a meeting she's long awaited. She will see her husband, even if from behind bars. It is the visit that the prisoners' relatives have been deprived of for several years under Israel's orders. For her daughter, the issue is a little different. She was an infant when her father was arrested 22 years ago. And today, she is older. She has since gotten married, but has not seen him.

Guest, Female #2 (Prisoner Mohamed Nashbat's Daughter)
We were happy, and I was happy that they are finally allowing us to visit. But at the same time I was sad; I mean, why aren't we allowed to visit? I am the prisoner's daughter and I have a right to see him; I last saw him eight years ago.

Guest, Female #3
I've never been allowed to visit.

Reporter, Male #2
Hajja Um Ibrahim Barood has a different story. She has been prevented from visiting her son for 15 years, under the pretext of security. Today, the visit brought Um Ibrahim great joy.

Guest, Female #3 (Prisoner Ibrahim Barood's Mother)
How can I describe it to you? I can't believe that I will see him. I want to hug him, but sadly there is no way for me to hug him and greet him. There is no way for my hand to touch him; I can't hold his hand. I can't touch him and he can't touch me.

Reporter, Male #2
At dawn, the prisoners' relatives who were allowed to visit were waiting at the International Red Cross headquarters in Gaza.

Guest, Female #4
I am very very happy that I can see my son. Very happy! But my happiness is not complete, because my children are not with me.

Reporter, Male #2
Under the pretext that the visit is a pilot, it was subjected to Israel's strict conditions. Regardless, the Red Cross and the prisoners' relatives hope the visits will continue, and include all Palestinian prisoners.

Guest, Male #3 (Ayman Shehabi, International Committee of the Red Cross Spokesman in Gaza)
We hope that it includes all prisoners in the Israeli prisons, and that visits are permitted to all families.

Reporter, Male #2
Today's visit is an incomplete step, but it is headed in the right direction. A step that shows that the prisoners and their families have a long path to attaining their legitimate rights, most notably the right to freedom. Wael al-Dahdouh, Al Jazeera, Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza.</media:text>

The president of the Palestinian Prisoners' Society, Qaddoura Fares, said terms of an agreement to end the strike of prisoner Mahmoud al-Sarsak were reached. Al-Sarsak entered his 89th day of hunger strike. The Israeli Prison Service promised prisoner al-Sarsak to look into his case, and respond to his request within 72 hours. Fares added that Sarsak has agreed in the meantime to drink only milk as he continues to demand his release.

With all of this Palestinian woman's worries and fears, she still joined the protest in solidarity with the prisoners. Her son, prisoner Mahmoud al-Sarsak, is between life and death after waging the longest hunger strike in the history of Palestinian prisoners, as he enters his 89th day of strike. Mahmoud was transferred to Assaf Harofeh hospital in south Tel Aviv after his health deteriorated. He is refusing to end his strike before receiving guarantees for his release.

Guest, Female #2
I miss him so much. May God grant his good health. We ask God to grant him health and to be able to stand back on his feet.

Reporter, Female #1
The worries of the prisoners' families grow as they continue to wait for the permission to visit their children on the basis of the agreement that was signed with Israel.

Reporter, Female #1
Another protest was organized outside the offices of the Red Cross in the city of Jerusalem. British and Scottish solidarity activists participated in the protest.

Guest, Male #2 (Timo Hill, Scottish Solidarity Activist)
We are here today to express our solidarity with the Palestinian people, and Palestinian prisoners who continue to resist the occupation. We will go to the British consulate to express our objection to the British government's complicity in the Israeli occupation.

Reporter, Female #1
As for the residents of the city, they endure humiliating searches when they visit the prisons, but at least it allows them to see their children and receive letters from them.

Guest, Male #3 (Father of Prisoner Bilal Abu Hussein)
He told me we will discuss the issues with the prison authority within a week, and if they don't meet our demands, we will go on strike again.

Reporter, Female #1
Three prisoners continue their hunger strike in the prisons. Besides Mahmoud al-Sarsak, prisoner Akram al-Rekhawi has entered his 60th day of strike; prisoner Samer al-Bark is on his 21st day. The agreement reached following the prisoners' hunger strike tackled dozens of issues, but left hundreds, if not thousands, of injustices inside these walls. These issues could reignite the case of the prisoners at any moment. Shirin Abu Aqla, Al Jazeera, near Ofer Prison, west of Ramallah.</media:text>

The case of Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike is gaining momentum inside and outside the walls of prison. In a new development, three prisoners on a hunger strike for 50 days rejected an Israeli offer to deport them to a European country for three months under the pretext of seeking medical treatment in exchange for ending their strike. Palestinian sources said the Israeli Prison Service has taken measures to ease restrictions imposed on Palestinian prisoners in an attempt to end the mass hunger strike carried out by nearly 4,700 detainees so far.</media:text>

As Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons continue their hunger strike for the 21st consecutive day, the Palestinian street is witnessing growing popular and official mobilization in solidarity with the prisoners. For their part, the prisoners have threatened to escalate the pace of their strike after the Israeli Prison Service failed to respond to the list of their demands. Our correspondent Iman Ereikat reports from Ramallah.

Hajj Hassan Arman could not hold back his tears during his act of solidarity with his detained son, Palestinian Mohammad Arman, who was sentenced to 37 life terms in Israeli prisons. His son and other Palestinian prisoners have been on a hunger strike for 21 days. The Israeli authorities deny Hajj Arman visits to his son, who has been in prison for 12 years, under the pretext the two men are not related. Hajj Arman says this reason requires the immediate intervention of Arabs and the international community.

Guest, Male #2 (Hajj Hassan Arman, Father of Detained Palestinian Mohammad Arman)
Where are we going? What are we enduring? I haven't seen him for 12 years. They say we're not relatives! The Israelis tell me, he's not your family member. How the hell am I not related to him? I am his father!

Reporter, Female #1
The Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike are threatening to escalate the scale of the strike inside the Israeli prisons. Palestinian sources say the escalation is possible in the coming days, as a result of what was described as the Israeli Prison Service's disregard of the Palestinian prisoners' demands. Their demands include ending solitary confinement, allowing residents of the Gaza Strip to visit their children and relatives, and ending the implementation of the "Shalit Law" inside the prisons. Meanwhile, the Palestinian side denied reports that a partial or complete agreement was reached between the hunger strikers' national committee and the Israeli Prison Service.

Guest, Male #3 (Qaddoura Fares, Head of the Palestinian Prisoners' Society)
No agreements have been reached. All the media outlets' reports in the past few days included a customary matter that happens during all strikes. The Prison Service is trying to end the strike at the lowest cost by partially responding to the demands, but the prisoners know very well that such steps cannot form the base or the grounds for ending the strike.

Reporter, Female #1
In an official statement, Israel said the Palestinian prisoners' hunger strike was aimed to attain "political privileges."

Guest, Male #4 (Ofir Gendelman, Israeli Government Spokesman)
This hunger strike was not an Israeli choice; rather, it was the prisoners' decision. They are the ones who decided to starve. We do not starve Palestinian prisoners. They have rights in accordance with international charters and norms. We abide by our commitments to the International Red Cross, but this decision was taken by the prisoners who want to achieve political privileges inside the prison. They are demanding inflated privileges that were terminated by the prison authorities.

Reporter, Female #1
Permanent protest tents were set up in the center of a number of Palestinian cities to display solidarity with the Palestinian prisoners' hunger strike. Meanwhile, confrontations continue between Palestinian youth and the Israeli army, which controls the area surrounding Ofer military prison, where peaceful popular demonstrations continue to be held in solidarity with what was described as "the battle of the empty stomachs."

Reporter, Female #1
On the ground, an escalation is likely to take place on the Palestinian street, according to official and popular confirmations amid the prisoners' ongoing hunger strike inside Israeli prisons, and growing Palestinian and Arab fears of a serious deterioration that could threaten the lives of the prisoners on strike. This, they fear, could take the entire region back to square one. From around the Israeli Ofer prison, west of the city of Ramallah, Iman Ereikat, BBC.</media:text>

<media:text>Palestinian sources are reporting that the imprisoned senior Fatah official, Marwan Barghouti has been placed in solitary confinement after the discovery of a cell phone in his prison cell. The Israel Prison Service confirmed those reports and stated that a device was found during a routine search regularly conducted in the cell of security prisoners. Earlier this week, Palestinian newspapers published calls from the 52-year-old Palestinan leader of both the first and second intifadas for a mass march in September of at least one million people from within and outside the West Bank to demonstrate support for the slated UN vote for recognition of a Palestinian state.
