<description>Hong Kong's brand new giant rubber duckie tourist attraction has suddenly deflated, letting the air out of excitement over the floating art exhibit in Victoria Harbor. The 54-foot-tall creation by Dutch conceptual artist Florentijn Hofman is nothing more than a huge yellow sheet of plastic now floating on the water. Officials from a waterfront shopping mall said the duck would be back on its webbed feet in no time, but some fans are crying fowl.</description>

<title>Free Speech Fail: Asian Satellite Provider Axes Iranian TV Channels</title>
        <link>http://news.linktv.org/videos/free-speech-fail-asian-satellite-provider-axes-iranian-tv-channels?start=0</link>
<description>Press TV reports that an Asian satellite provider has stopped providing services to Iranian channels, including Press TV. Nearly 37 percent of AsiaSat's shares are owned by the American company General Electric. The network called AsiaSat about the development, but its corporate affairs manager, Winnie Pang, declined to comment. This move comes after two European satellite providers, Intelsat and Eutelsat SA, took 19 Iranian channels off the air in October under pressure from the European Union.&lt;br /&gt;</description>

<media:keywords>AsiaSat, Sanctions against Iran, Press TV, Iran, Freedom of the press, General Electric, European Union, Freedom of speech, Barack Obama, United States</media:keywords>
<media:text>Another satellite provider, this time in East Asia, pulls the plug on Press TV. AsiaSat said it has stopped providing services to all Iranian channels. The Hong Kong-based company says the decision is in line with the US law recently signed by President Barack Obama. According to the new sanctions, American companies are banned from doing business with Iran. In the case of AsiaSat, nearly 37 percent of its shares are owned by the American company General Electric. This is not the first time that satellite have removed Iranian TV channels from the air. Back in April, the Munich regulatory body ordered SCS-Astra to take Press TV off its platform. In October, two European satellite providers, Intelsat and Eutelsat SA, also took 19 Iranian channels off the air, claiming that the move had been under pressure from the EU. But the bloc denied the charges and later ordered the companies to refrain from commenting on the issue.

To find out why AsiaSat pulled the plug, Press TV contacted the satellite communication company. Its corporate affairs manager, Winnie Pang, promised to e-mail a statement to Press TV's newsroom director Hamid-Reza Emadi, but he did not receive any e-mails. They called the company to pursue the matter, where the manager said that the company had no comment on the issues of whether the US had ordered the company to take Iranian channels off the air.</media:text>

Six crew members have been arrested after a passenger ferry collided with a boat carrying workers and their families from an electricity company to watch the national fireworks display. Rescuers search for survivors in a partially-submerged boat after two vessels collided in Hong Kong October 1, 2012. A major rescue is underway in the waters near Yung Shue Wan on Hong Kong's Lamma island following a collision involving two vessels in the evening, government radio reported on Monday. Police say there were about 100 people onboard both vessels, with many of them in the water. </media:text>

        <media:text>Yul Kwon:
What happens when you take the one-child policy, add the higher cost of city living, then subtract healthcare and education benefits? What you get is a labor shortage in the world's most populous country. Chinese workers are getting pickier about what kind of jobs they'll take. And CCTV tells us that the manufacturing hub of Guangdong province, which accounts for a third of China's exports, is struggling to keep its factories full.

Reporter:
When we first arrived at the workshop of this packaging company, we had mistaken it for a warehouse. Leftover orders from last year and unprocessed raw materials were piled high in the hallway. Only one assembly line was manned and in operation. Although most of the production process is automated, the last few steps still require a lot of workers to finish the package boxes by hand. At full capacity, this factory has over 100 workers and eight active assembly lines. But now, most of the lines sit in silence.

Wu Zhiqiang, Manager:
Compared to last year, this year it is even harder to hire enough workers. We have been at the job fair for three days and barely got a few new employees. There were more employers than employees at the fair.

Reporter:
At an open job fair in a nearby town, hundreds of small and medium sized businesses are looking for experienced workers to help them fill orders during the long vacation. The workers seeking jobs there hope the new year will bring new opportunities for advancing their career.

Job Seeker:
I hope that I can find a better job this year, better accommodation, food and salary, better conditions in general.

Job Seeker:
I came from Jiangsu province, because I can operate computers. I think there are more opportunities in Guangzhou. The factories here use more advanced, up-to-date technologies in production.

Reporter:
The labor-intensive industries at Pearl River Delta have enjoyed the benefits of cheap labor for many years. This recent shortage in workers seems to be signaling the end of this golden age. Once the spearhead in China's economic development, the province of Guangdong has attracted labor forces from all across the country. But now other parts of China are catching up in this race, and reform in the industry is essential to keep an edge in this competition.

Yul Kwon:
The labor shortage in China could be temporary. Job-hopping after the Lunar New Year is a seasonal phenomenon. But according to the China Labor Bulletin, a Hong Kong-based NGO, there are about 30,000 work-related strikes and protests on the mainland each year, which seems to point to an increasingly unhappy workforce.</media:text>

<media:text>Inspired by the &quot;Occupy Wall Street&quot; protests in New York, demonstrations have spread to financial districts across the world. While mainland China has yet to see a demonstration, one has been unfolding in Hong Kong, the former British colony that enjoys more freedom than the Mainland. Protestors occupy Hong Kong's central business district in support of New York's &quot;Occupy Wall Street&quot; movement -- this is &quot;Occupy Central.&quot; The crowd is made up of several hundred people and groups from different backgrounds. They are voicing their dissatisfaction with the financial system and big businesses. [Chen Shiyun, Secretary, Students/Professors Business Monitoring Project]: &quot; We oppose the greed of big businesses. We feel that most fundamentally our workers produce a lot of products for us, they should get fair treatment, and their human rights should be guaranteed. Actually the government and capitalists definitely have a responsibility they can't avoid.&quot; In the crowd is Chen Guangyu from the Lehman Victims Alliance. He says the collapse of the banks in 2008 touches on moral issues. [Chen Guangyu, Chairman, Lehman Victims Alliance]: &quot; It isn't just about money, outside of the financial issues, Lehman isn't just an issue of fighting for wealth, the Lehman incident touches upon the issue of what is right and wrong.&quot; In Hong Kong, citizens have the freedom to protest, where as in mainland China such protests are rarely tolerated by the regime. [Mainland Chinese Student]: &quot;I feel really fresh, because in mainland China, you can't see this kind of thing, so I also came to join in. I feel it is really lacking in the Mainland compared to here, in the Mainland you can't say the things you can say here, but actually the situation (here) does exist.&quot; Demonstrators brought tents with them and say they are going to maintain the occupation long term. <media:text>The American debt crisis strikes a nerve among global investors, resulting in chaos on the Asian stock markets (footage from Reuters).

----

Last week, the United States was downgraded by a credit ratings agency for the first time in the country’s history, stoking fears that the US economy may be heading towards another recession. The downgrade sparked a sharp selloff in American stocks. But the carnage didn’t stop there, as markets in Asia were also pummeled.

Hardest hit were the countries that depend on American consumers to buy many of their exports. Just take a look what happened to the big four stock markets in Asia -- Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Seoul. They went on a roller coaster ride, reacting to bits of news out of Washington or Wall Street.
