The British government has refused to comment on a report in the Guardian newspaper, indicating London rebuffed an American request to use their military bases in Cyprus and in the Gulf in the case the US decides to carry out an attack on Iran over its nuclear program.

Presenter, Male #1
According to the paper, London relied on legal advice stating that any preemptive attack on Iran could be considered a breach of international law. The report indicated that the Americans asked the British to allow their planes to take off from Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean and Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean, which are under British control, to hit nuclear facilities in Iran.</media:text>

<media:text>A sexual abuse scandal shaking the BBC has broadened, with the broadcaster saying that it is investigating claims of sexual abuse and harassment against nine staff members and contributors, in addition to the late disgraced children's TV host Jimmy Savile. The BBC has been rocked by allegations that Savile, who died last year, abused underage teens over several decades, sometimes on BBC premises. Some of the alleged victims have accused other entertainers and BBC staff of participating in abuse during the 60s, 70s and 80s. Since Savile's death, scores of women and several men have come forward to say the entertainer, long-time host of music and children's programs including "Top of the Pops" and "Jim'll Fix it" abused them when they were children or teenagers. Police have identified more than 200 potential victims. The BBC, one of the world's largest and most respected broadcasters, is under fire for failing to stop the abuse and for pulling an expose on Savile from TV schedules at the last minute in December. Al Jazeera's Charlie Angela reports from London.</media:text>

<media:text>Shaker Aamer has been held in Guantanamo Bay since 2002. He's a legal UK resident, married to a British national, with four children. He's also yet to face trial or be charged. So why is he still behind bars? Through conversations with activists and former detainees, this film paints a picture of Aamer and his extraordinary situation; from the injustices he has endured to what his life has involved for the last decade. From Bagram to Guantanamo Bay, his story illustrates the "unlawful" measures that the US and UK governments continue to use to justify their War on Terror, "ignoring international law, Geneva conventions, and their own Constitution."</media:text>

However, even she was likely surprised by the harshness of some of the questions from notoriously tough interviewer Jeremy Paxman, including, "Is it hard for you to defend a policy you don't agree with?", "Is this some kind of joke?", and "Do you ever think you are incompetent?"</media:text>

<media:text>Britain says the war in Libya will cost taxpayers at least 415 million dollars. This, after the British government announced in March that the cost would only run into the tens of millions. Britain's Royal Air Force Typhoon and Tornado aircraft have conducted hundreds of bombing missions over Libya since March. Some predict that the war in Libya could rise to one and a half billion dollars if military operations drag out throughout the year. Britain's treasury says it will meet the cost from its reserves rather than normal budgets. </media:text>
