A special young camel given as a gift to French President Francois Hollande by Mali authorities has ended up in an unfortunate home: the stomachs of a Malian family. C'est la vie. Hollande says he left the creature with the family for safekeeping because it just wouldn't have fit in Paris. CNN disagrees. Mali officials plan to replace the animal with a camel sent directly to Paris.

When you're the French budget minister in charge of cracking down on tax dodgers for the Socialist government, it's probably not a good idea to evade taxes yourself by hiding funds in foreign banks. But that's what J&eacute;r&ocirc;me Cahuzac has admitted to doing after months of angry denials and the threat of a lawsuit against the media organization that broke the story. Cahuzac has resigned, and could now face charges.

Syrian Opposition Activist: Arming Rebels Not the Answer

Today marks the second anniversary of the uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a conflict that has killed more than 70,000 people and created at least 1 million refugees. We're joined by Rim Turkmani, an astrophysicist and member of the Syrian Civil Democratic Alliance who's in New York meeting with Security Council members discussing possible political solutions to the situation in Syria. Turkmani warns that Syrian voices for non-violence are being ignored as foreign actors on both sides of the conflict fuel an armed conflict. "There is a systematic effort to marginalize people like us inside Syria and focus only on the armed rebels -- they are the ones stealing all the headlines," Turkmani says. "Why? Because yes, there are certain actors, regional and international, who see this as a proxy war and as an opportunity to fight their international opponents. It's a struggle over Syria, over power, and the Syrians are falling victim to that." <br />

Islamist Rebels Defy French Forces, Retake Town in Central Mali

Islamist rebels in Mali have seized control of a small town from government forces, despite the military intervention by France. Reports say the counter-attack on Diabali was led by a leader of one of the main jihadist groups, al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. One security source said the rebels came from the Mauritanian border to avoid being bombarded by French planes. They reportedly crossed a river in small groups to re-take the town 400 kilometers north of the capital Bamako. The French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said overall the intervention was going well, and in eastern Mali the rebels had been forced back. "There remains one difficult point in the west, where we are dealing with heavily armed groups and where operations are taking place at the moment alongside Malian forces who fought bravely last Friday in the east," he said. France has called for a meeting of the UN Security Council. It says its intervention on Friday in the face of a rebel advance stopped the Islamists from seizing the capital. President Hollande says the aim is simply to support a West African military mission to retake northern Mali. Islamist leaders have threatened to attack France in retaliation. Britain is sending a cargo plane carrying military equipment and medical facilities for the French forces. <br />

The barbaric death machine that the Syrian regime is using to confront its people, who are only guilty of demanding freedom, remains clearly reflected in the number of missiles targeting all Syrian governorates, and that have claimed the lives of over 39,000 people since the beginning of the Syrian revolution 20 months ago. The violent shelling with heavy artillery and tanks on the neighborhoods of southern Damascus was visible amid violent clashes between the Free Army and the regime's army. Meanwhile, al-Assad's brigades waged a campaign of raids and arrests in the neighborhoods of Rukn al-Din, Qabr Atiqa and Bab Sraija.

In the countryside of Damascus, warplanes and artillery shelling hit the cities of Saqba, Hamriya, and most cities in al-Ghouta al-Sharqiyah. Heavy artillery shelling was renewed on the cities of Zamalka, Arbin, Douma, and the towns of Beyela and al-Sabina. The countryside of Idlib witnessed violent shelling with heavy artillery and rocket launchers, especially in the city of Maarat al-Numaan, where a number of deaths and injuries were reported.

In Homs, the symbol of resistance, heavy artillery shelling was renewed on its besieged neighborhoods amid violent clashes in the neighborhood of Deir Baalba, between the Free Army and the regime's army that rained its heavy machine guns on the neighborhood of Mo'ar. Heavy artillery and mortar shelling was also renewed on the city of al-Rastan and the town of al-Ghanto. The scene was the same in Aleppo where artillery shelling was renewed on the neighborhood of al-Layramoun amid violent clashes near a security building between the Free Army and the regime's army. The provinces of Daraa and Deir az-Zour were also scenes of the Assad army's crimes, which pounded the cities and towns of these provinces with all kinds of weapons, especially the city of Inkhil and the town of al-Karak al-Sharqi in Daraa, and the neighborhood of al-Sheikh Yassin in Deir az-Zour that was targeted with rocket launchers.

Reporter, Male #2
As for the countryside of Deir az-Zour, violent clashes erupted, especially in the city of al-Bukamal in the surroundings of the security square between al-Assad's army and the Free Army that liberated a number of security headquarters in the city. Heavy warplane shelling targeted the towns of Rif al-Tabaqa al-Gharby in the province of al-Riqqa amid violent clashes in the town of Dibsi Aafnane, while helicopters dropped barrel bombs on the villages of Dobrikiyeh, Said Salma, Rabia in Latakia. The regime's army also burned homes in the village of al-Msheirfa.

American President Barack Obama refused to recognize the unified Syrian opposition as the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people, or even as a transitional government in exile. In his first press conference since getting reelected as president, Obama welcomed the opposition's formation as a diverse and representative group. However, he warned that the United States is still not ready to recognize it as a government in exile, saying, "We consider them a legitimate representative of the aspirations of the Syrian people."

Presenter, Male #1
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius announced that his country will ask the European Union to lift the embargo on sending defensive arms to Syria, in order to send these types of weapons to opposition fighters. Fabius said his country will conduct talks with UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi and with Russia because they want to reach a solution. He said that President Francois Hollande will receive officials of the new Syrian opposition coalition on Saturday, including Sheikh Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib, the new president of the Syrian National Council, and George Sabra.

Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou said jihadists in northern Mali will not stop at West Africa, and that their goal is Europe, adding that those who control Africa control Europe. Issoufou made these statements during an interview with the French Le Figaro newspaper on the eve of his meeting with French President Francois Hollande on Tuesday in Paris.

Late Sunday evening, the Nigerian television announced the Economic Community of West African States' decision to send nearly 3,000 soldiers to northern Mali to restore stability to the region. The decision was made at the end of the summit held in the Nigerian capital, Abuja. Nigeria, Niger, and Burkina Faso will deploy most of the troops. Military experts from the UN, ECOWAS countries, Europe and the African Union had laid out a plan to return the northern part of Mali to the authority of its central government. However, the plan was awaiting the approval of the African Union and the Security Council before getting implemented. Seven months ago, a military coup toppled the rule of the democratically-elected president, which created a vacuum that paved the way for the extremist Islamist Ansar al-Deen group to seize power in the north. Observers and diplomats say the plan requires months before its implementation, even with the approval of the United Nations.</media:text>

<media:text>France has approved a draft bill to allow same-sex marriages. The proposal would give gay couples the right to adopt children but not access to assisted procreation methods. The draft was a compromise, leaving out the complex issue of assisted procreation to ease its way through parliament. But left-wing deputies have vowed to amend the text to include it. Ludovic-Mohamed Zahed, who wed his partner in South Africa, believes the plans do not go far enough: "The ideal for me is that people have choice, so we all have the same rights and that our unions are all recognised by society. I'm less interested in how we call it: PACS (official civil contract between two adults of same-sex or opposite-sex), marriage, live-in partnership. What matters to me is that we all have access to the same rights." The draft legislation is the first major social reform of Francois Hollande's presidency. Parliament is due to vote on it in the middle of next year. But religious leaders and conservative politicians have fiercely attacked the plan as playing havoc with the civil code. Thierry Vidor of the Families of France Association said: "there are intrinsic differences between a man and a woman. You can see that in the first years of a child's life - women and men behave completely differently towards a child." Leaders of all major faiths have announced street protests next week against the measure which if passed would make France the 12th country in the world to allow same-sex marriage.</media:text>

In statements to the media, the French minister mentioned the steps that must be followed after West African countries received the authorization of the Security Council to prepare a detailed plan for such an intervention.

Presenter, Male #1
He said that African countries have 45 days to do so. The minister clarified that France will not send forces to Mali.

Reporter, Male #2
Mali is becoming a French obsession. A few days ago, President Francois Hollande vowed to crush the Islamists there. Later, his defense minister spoke of a military intervention in the former French colony within weeks, not several months. However, he clarified that French forces will not be deployed on the ground.

Reporter, Male #2
Paris will provide logistic support, and will push for restoring Mali's unity. According to the French minister, the Sahel region is turning into a terrorist haven where groups, extremists, arms, and drug dealers are dividing Mali. The minister vowed to prevent this division, considering the unity of these countries as significant for the safety of Europe.

Reporter, Male #2
Paris' stance comes despite threats by Islamist groups, believed to be affiliated with al-Qaeda, to open the doors of hell to the French hostages they hold. The al-Tawhid Wal-Jihad group in West Africa warned that Paris will not be able to count the bodies of its nationals in the region if it continued to support sending troops to Mali. However, what seemed like a French project took an international turn a few days ago.

Reporter, Male #2
The Security Council asked The Economic Commission of West African States, known as ECOWAS, the African Union, and the United Nations to prepare a plan for military intervention within 45 days. This led Paris to conclude that the intervention will occur within a few weeks.

Reporter, Male #2
However, regional parties still have their reservations about the idea. Among them is Algeria, although it was forced to enter the crisis since the Mali coup last March. It fears that Mali will turn into another Afghanistan, and believes that intervention will only make the situation worse, and the only solution in its view is peaceful dialogue to dismantle the crisis, not to add more fuel to the fire.</media:text>

In France, the French judiciary referred 7 out of 12 suspects for trial after announcing their arrest for being part of a terror network. French authorities announced that some of them wanted to fight in Syria. The Paris Court's prosecutor general had announced the discovery of a list of Jewish organizations in Paris at the home of the suspected cell leader. He also pushed French authorities to renew security measures at Jewish temples and schools. Mohamed Wamousi reports from Paris.

Reporter, Male #2
The security alert is at its highest level. France has entered a critical phase. Police discovered bomb-making equipment and materials in a garage used by one of the 12 detainees, who are suspected of being part of a terror cell.

Guest, Male #3 (Francois Molins, Paris Court Prosecutor General)
In addition to a rifle and handgun, we found bags of potassium nitrate, some amount of sulfur and gunpowder, and pressure cookware. All of these are used to produce what are known as handheld explosive devices.

Reporter, Male #2
The developments regarding the terror cell are being followed first hand by the French president. The President's minister of internal affairs told him something that couldn't wait until the end of the press conference that was being held with his guest, the Spanish prime minister. His expression quickly changed, and he followed by acknowledging the danger of the threats.

Guest, Male #4 (Francois Hollande, French President)
We found tools that confirm to us that other operations were being planned. For that, I praise the police and judiciary's work. The arrests did not only include those involved in past events, but individuals preparing to carry out other dangerous operations.

Reporter, Male #2
French police intensified security measures in front of Jewish temples and schools. They discovered a list of Jewish organizations in Paris at the home of the suspected cell leader, who was killed during an exchange of fire with police during an attempt to arrest him.

Reporter, Male #2
France, which is under the rule of socialists, has started to feel the ghost of al-Qaeda in the air. Without regard for the scope of the threats, their background, and their sources, French security apparatus today prefers to mobilize and confront suspicions before they turn into painful realities. In Syria, 25 people were killed and dozens were injured after a booby-trapped car exploded in the city of Jaramana, in the countryside of Damascus. The bombing occurred during a funeral procession for two regime loyalists who were killed yesterday when an explosive device was detonated.

Presenter, Male #1
Activists said that four soldiers were killed in clashes between the regime's army and the Free Army in the neighborhood of Jobar in the countryside of Damascus. Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 13 people were killed by the regime's shelling of the town of Kafr Nabl in Idlib, and that seven others were killed in Hama.

Presenter, Male #1
As for Aleppo, clashes occurred between the regime's army and the Free Syrian Army in the neighborhood of Salaheddine, as the army escalated its shelling of the neighborhood of al-Sukari in the south and Hanano in the north, leading to the death of a number of civilians. Syrian opposition activists said that regime forces also shelled the city of al-Bukamal in eastern Syria with warplanes.

Presenter, Male #1
They uploaded pictures online showing bombs dropping on one of the city's neighborhoods. In Damascus, gunmen from the Free Army attacked what they said is a Syrian army checkpoint amid a heavy exchange of gunfire. This comes as opposition sources noted that a number of people were wounded in the area of Subayneh in Damascus due to the artillery shelling. And in Aleppo in the north, clashes were renewed between the Free Syrian Army and fighters of the Syrian army. According to the Syrian Revolution's General Commission, the neighborhood of al-Kalasa and the neighborhoods of Aleppo's Old City witnessed mass displacement after being shelled by warplanes.

Presenter, Male #1
The president of the opposition Syrian National Council, Abdel Baset Sayda, said that it is too early to talk about a provisional government, but he added that the Syrian opposition is exerting serious efforts, and is continuing its consultations to form a transitional government. Sayda added the announcement will not come soon, criticizing American officials who described the Syrian opposition as divided.

Reporter, Male #2
According to opposition activists, the government is continuing its military campaign in different parts of the country with an increasing use of warplanes. These videos were uploaded online, but could not be verified in light of the restrictions imposed on independent media outlets in Syria. Opposition members say they show Russian-made MiG and Sukhoi aircraft hovering over the outskirts of Damascus. Reports coming out of the capital indicate dozens were killed in an air raid on the suburbs of Saqba and Zamalka Monday night.

Reporter, Male #2
Other videos show a military helicopter falling on the neighborhood of al-Qaboun in Damascus, as admitted by the government that did not provide additional details. And while the acts of violence and clashes were witnessed in different parts of the country, from Daraa in the south to Deir az-Zour, Homs, and Idlib in the north, all eyes are on Aleppo, the country's second largest city. Official media said government forces were able to cleanse some neighborhoods in the city from those who it described as terrorists, as opposition members said the fighting is ongoing in its neighborhoods.

Reporter, Male #2
Pictures broadcast by Reuters Agency show the Syrian opposition in the countryside of Aleppo receiving food, military equipment, and ammunition, excluding heavy weapons, especially anti-aircraft missiles. Fighters depend on their local experience to repair their loot from the Syrian army.

Guest, Male #3
We fix it and we use it in raids. We used this yesterday to raid an artillery battalion in al-Zahra.

And as the opposition is enduring difficulties on the ground, some foreign political stances were expressed in support of the opposition.

Guest, Male #4 (Mohamed Morsi, Egyptian President)
They Syrian people clearly said to the entire world that this regime must leave. So as countries that support the Syrian people's movement, their revolution, and their right to freedom, stability, and an end to the bloodshed, when we discuss these issues, we have no room to talk about the two parties, or a dialogue between the two parties, or of reform. We discuss supporting the Syrian people's will, and the importance of change.

Reporter, Male #2
As for the French president, who confirmed that Paris is working with its partners to establish buffer zones, he called on the opposition to form a government in exile.

Guest, Male #5 (Francois Hollande, French President)
France is asking the Syrian opposition to form a unified provisional government that could be the legitimate representative of a new Syria.

Reporter, Male #2
The level of violence in Syria may have exceeded many limits, but does not call for foreign military intervention right now. And as some opposition members believe that foreign and Arab countries have abandoned them, a political solution remains on the table, pending an agreement between the influential powers in the Syrian crisis. In the meantime, Syrians alone are paying the heavy price. Wael al-Hajjar, BBC.</media:text>

        <media:text>Presenter, Female #1
Francois Asselineau, president of the Popular Republican Union, called for boycotting the presidential elections, which he described as a farce. This comes as the first round is scheduled for next Sunday. The election is witnessing a fierce competition between the socialist front-runner, candidate Francois Hollande, and outgoing President Nicolas Sarkozy, who finally admitted to having negotiated with the Gaddafi regime over supplying the country a nuclear reactor.

Reporter, Male #1
In a few hours, the French will choose a new president. It could be outgoing President Nicolas Sarkozy, or his most prominent opponent, socialist front-runner, candidate Francois Hollande. But the competition could lead to another critical round next month. It seems the electoral battle in the upcoming phase will look more like a debate between the French presidential candidates. This, as polls reveal the popularity of right-wing candidate Nicolas Sarkozy receded, especially after recently receiving harsh blows from the media. Amongst these setbacks is the revelation of the obscure relationship between the French president and Arab leader Muammar al-Gaddafi, who was ousted by a popular revolution. At the time, France's Sarkozy was behind foreign intervention in Libya, which was accompanied by an operation to topple the Libyan colonel.

Reporter, Male #1
Sarkozy retracted his denial that he held talks with al-Gaddafi to sell Libya a nuclear reactor four years ago. The man tried in vain to get rid of the embarrassment caused by this scandal by justifying one of the contradictions that distinguish French foreign policy, which supported the dictatorship at one point then helped overthrow it. However, the entire presidential election was not spared from challenges to its credibility and integrity. The president of the Popular Republican Union, Francois Asselineau, is not the only one who questioned the illusion of having freedom of opinion and expression, as claimed by the French authority. He also objects to the media's dominance over the French political scene, serving the interest of one party over another.

Guest, Male #2 (Francois Asselineau, Popular Republican Union President)
If you are a candidate, and no one talks about you in the media before the first round of elections, then district mayors will not be able to know you, and will not endorse you. So there is no way for you to run in the presidential elections in France. This is an essential point. They say these elections are democratic, but they are not. There is censorship in both the political and media spheres.

Reporter, Male #1
Asselineau's statements seem accurate in regard to the French authority's restriction of freedom of opinion and expression. He was not allowed to meet with nearly 50 people in a conference hall, and had to resort to a lower hall in one of the public cafes. The reason may be that this man leads a party that lists France's withdrawal from NATO and the wars as its priorities. The party also calls for establishing good relationships with Arab, African, and Asian countries, in addition to taking his country out of the Eurozone and the European Union to solve its economic crisis. These goals may be red lines for the decision-makers within the French Republic.</media:text>
