Egypt's public prosecutor referred 75 defendants to the criminal court over the Port Said incident, including nine policemen, most notably the former security chief and three of his associates. The Port Said incident on February 1st led to the killing of at least 74 soccer fans.

The Egyptian public prosecutor ordered 75 people to stand trial over the Port Said incident, including nine policemen. This indicates the blood of those killed in the soccer match was not shed in vain. But observers were perplexed that the nine policemen who were accused are not part of the security leadership that is usually in charge of investigations and giving orders. The prosecution also included three officials from al-Masry's soccer club. It came after a parliamentary investigation held local security institutions mostly responsible for the violence. The belief was that the security personnel on the soccer field underestimated the possibility of riots and ignored the danger of the match, even when many al-Ahly fans left after sensing the danger.

At least 74 people were killed and a hundred were injured in the violence that erupted early last month, after the referee blew his whistle to mark the end of the game between al-Masry and al-Ahly. Al-Masry won 3 to 1 inflicting on al-Ahly its first defeat of the season. Hundreds of al-Masry fans, one of Port Said's local clubs, descended onto the field and threw stones and glass bottles at the fans of al-Ahly, a team from Cairo. Violent clashes between policemen and protestors followed the incident, killing 16 people in Cairo and Suez. The incident led to additional protests against the military council that has been ruling the country since the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak's regime. A number of witnesses and political officials accused the security forces of not intervening, and of having flawed security arrangements. Essam Abdullah, BBC.</media:text>

In Egypt, the fact-finding committee announced the result of its investigation into the Port Said incidents, which killed more than 70 fans following a soccer match. The committee held fans and security officers equally responsible. However, the parliamentary committee's findings ruled out the incidents were part of a plot hatched by elements within the security institution seeking to create chaos in the country. Member of the People's Assembly and head of the parliamentary committee, Ashraf Thabet, said in a preliminary report that incitement by sports TV channels was one of the causes of the disaster.</media:text>

A fact-finding committee for the Port Said incidents has begun its mission in the city.

Protests and bloody conflicts broke out once again. This is the situation in Egypt two days after the disaster killed 74 people and wounded hundreds of others following a soccer match between two the teams, al-Ahly and al-Masry, in Port Said. Here, in the surrounding areas of the Interior Ministry in central Cairo, seesaw battles are ongoing between security forces guarding the ministry's building and dozens of protestors, most of whom are from the al-Ahly fan club known as al-Ultras. Tahrir Square, which was described as the beating heart of the Egyptian revolution, has become a platform for a mix of political protestors and soccer fan protestors. These people gathered to demand that the Military Council accelerate the transfer of power to civilians on a Friday they named the "Friday of the President First."

They are supposed to relinquish power, so they should. If you can't handle the responsibility, then leave.

Last night, Tahrir Square was also a platform for massive turmoil and confrontations. The square and the surrounding areas of the ministry witnessed wide-scale clashes. The memory of incidents in Port Said, which are being referred to as a massacre, is still fresh.
Most victims in the incidents were Al-Ahly fans. Thousands of al-Ahly fans took to the streets, along with their sympathizers, to express their anger towards what they consider to be a security institution's conspiracy in the massacre. Hundreds of protestors were injured in the night clashes. The protestors believe that security forces allowed the al-Masry fans and those they describe as thugs to kill al-Ahly fans. Their reasoning is that the security institutions want revenge against the al-Ahly fans who took part in the revolution and subsequent events, along with fans of other soccer teams. Part of the protestors' anger is directed at the ruling Military Council. They accuse the council of negligence and of being unable to provide security in Port Said and other cities.
Suez is another platform for clashes. Eyewitnesses reported that two people were killed by police gunfire and dozens were injured when protestors of the Port Said massacre attempted to storm the security directorate's building. The Suez security directorate denied that the security and police are responsible for killing protestors, accusing outlawed perpetrators of being behind the incident. In any case, it seems as though confrontations will continue to escalate.</media:text>

For three days starting today, Egyptians will be dressed in black to express grief and sorrow over last night's heavy causalities. Seventy-four people were killed in the incidents that turned what was supposed to be a friendly game of soccer between al-Ahly and al-Masry Clubs into a chaotic scene of violence. The military council formed a fact-finding committee to investigate the incident and pursue the perpetrators responsible for the violence, which erupted immediately after the referee blew the whistle ending the game. The fans of the winning al-Masry team rushed onto the field and attacked the al-Ahly fans. The field turned into a confrontation zone, leaving behind a large number of injured. The incidents in Port Said quickly echoed across Cairo Stadium, which was hosting a soccer match between the al-Zamalek and the al-Ismaeli teams. The game in Cairo, which was halted in light of the Port Said violence, also witnessed acts of violence and vandalism, including setting part of the stadium on fire. What happened was not rage provoked by a soccer game, but rather a premeditated act of violence, as confirmed by the head of the ruling military council, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi. Tantawi expressed regret over the incident and vowed to pursue and prosecute the criminals. The People's Assembly held an emergency session and observed a minute of silence to mourn the fallen victims. Politically, Egyptians continue to mobilize on various fronts in an attempt to contain the situation, amid rage and condemnation by the Egyptian public that was hoping to take a break after a year of tragic incidents. Tawfiq Ahmad reports from Cairo.

Egyptians experienced hours of regretful and tragic events, and the reason this time wasn't political. Egyptians expressed shock, rage, and condemnation over the incidents that took place at a soccer game that was part of the Premier League's tournament.

Guest, Male #3
We are mad and sad for what happened. This was only a game, not a war.

Guest, Male #4
There must be someone behind what happened. As an Egyptian citizen who watched the game, I believe the Interior Ministry was negligent. Why didn't they secure the game?

Guest, Female #1
I'm very sad for what happened. May God help the country and protect it from what's coming. What happened doesn't please anyone.

Guest, Male #5
This is a disaster affecting the entire Egyptian public, socially and politically. This will reflect negatively on the political situation and the country's future.

Egyptians are demanding to know who is responsible for the security breakdown, which seems only to be getting worse, not better as many expected. Many Egyptians believe the bloody incidents are nothing but a series of premeditated acts of violence aimed at aborting the Egyptian revolution. Amid the rage, Egyptians across the Republic are observing three days of mourning. Politically, the head of the military council, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi confirmed that the incident was premeditated and vowed to pursue and punish the criminals.

Guest, Male #6 (Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, Head of the Military Council)
No one will be able to harm Egypt, God willing. We will continue moving forward and we will overcome this phase. These types of incidents could happen anywhere in the world. Having said that, we will not let these perpetrators or those behind them go free.

Reporter, Male #2
All state institutions are being put on alert. The People's Assembly held an emergency session in order to discuss the incidents and their repercussions. In addition, Egyptian Prime Minister Kamal al-Janzuir held an urgent session with the security committees. The Attorney General opened an investigation into the incident. Politicians and parliamentarians condemned the violence and called for the resignation of the country's interior minister and security leaders. Meanwhile, the Egyptian Football Association suspended all games until the investigation is complete and all necessary security measures are taken. Otherwise, the association will cancel the entire season. </media:text>
