<title>Syria: Russia Delivers First Set of Missiles to Assad</title>
        <link>http://news.linktv.org/videos/syria-russia-delivers-first-set-of-missiles-to-assad?start=0</link>
<description>Syria has received the first shipment of an advanced Russian air defence system and will soon get the rest of the S-300 missiles. That's according to President Bashar al-Assad who is quoted in a Lebanese newspaper. His remarks to the al-Akhbar daily may surprise the West as it has only been a few days since Russia said it would deliver the system despite Western objections after the EU let its arms embargo on Syria expire. Moscow which is an ally of Syria criticised the EU move as it opens the way towards arming the Syrian rebels. Russia has warned against any foreign interference in the Syrian conflict and said it would send the missiles in order to help stabilise the regional balance.</description>

<description>International tensions over Syria continue to ratchet up significantly as Russian officials announce the nation will press ahead with plans to sell Syria an advanced S-300 air defense missile system in the face of western opposition, saying it will help deter &quot;hotheads&quot; who back foreign intervention. The Russians also accused the European Union of &quot;throwing fuel on the fire&quot; with plans to let an arms embargo to the rebels expire, saying such a move threatens efforts to organize an international peace conference. &amp;nbsp;</description>

<description>European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso accept the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of Europe. The prestigious award, controversially given to the EU rather than an individual, has been collected by Herman Van Rompuy and Jose Manuel Barroso, the Union's two &quot;presidents&quot; to the sound of trumpet fanfares and in the presence of the Norwegian Royal Family. In his acceptance speech, Mr Van Rompuy attempted to appeal to the millions of Europeans hit by the eurozone crisis and recession to reassure them that their suffering was worthwhile as part of an project to stop war ever breaking out on the European continent again. &quot;Where there was war, there is now peace. <media:text>In his most extended interview in months, Julian Assange speaks to Democracy Now! from inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London where he has been holed up for nearly six months. Assange vowed WikiLeaks would persevere despite attacks against it. On Tuesday, the European Commission announced that the credit card company Visa did not break the European Union's anti-trust rules by blocking donations to WikiLeaks. &quot;Since the blockade was erected in December 2010, WikiLeaks has lost 95 percent of donations that were attempted to be transferred to us over that period ... our rightful and natural growth, our ability to publish as much as we would like, our ability to defend ourselves and our sources has been diminished by that blockade.&quot; Assange also speaks about his new book, &quot;Cypherpunks: Freedom and the Future of the Internet.&quot; &quot; The mass surveillance and mass interception that is occurring to all of us now who use the Internet is also a mass transfer of power from individuals into extremely sophisticated state and private intelligence organizations and their cronies,&quot; he says. Assange also discusses the United States' targeting of WikiLeaks. &quot; The Pentagon is maintaining a line that WikiLeaks inherently as an institution, that tells military and governmental whistleblowers to step forward with information, is a crime. They allege that we are criminal moving forward,&quot; Assange says. &quot; Now the new interpretation of the Espionage Act that the government is trying to hammer into the legal system, and which the department of justice is complicit in, would mean the end of national security journalism in the United States.&quot; </media:text>

<description>Press TV reports that an Asian satellite provider has stopped providing services to Iranian channels, including Press TV. Nearly 37 percent of AsiaSat's shares are owned by the American company General Electric. The network called AsiaSat about the development, but its corporate affairs manager, Winnie Pang, declined to comment. This move comes after two European satellite providers, Intelsat and Eutelsat SA, took 19 Iranian channels off the air in October under pressure from the European Union.&lt;br /&gt;</description>

<media:text>Another satellite provider, this time in East Asia, pulls the plug on Press TV. AsiaSat said it has stopped providing services to all Iranian channels. The Hong Kong-based company says the decision is in line with the US law recently signed by President Barack Obama. According to the new sanctions, American companies are banned from doing business with Iran. In the case of AsiaSat, nearly 37 percent of its shares are owned by the American company General Electric. This is not the first time that satellite have removed Iranian TV channels from the air. Back in April, the Munich regulatory body ordered SCS-Astra to take Press TV off its platform. In October, two European satellite providers, Intelsat and Eutelsat SA, also took 19 Iranian channels off the air, claiming that the move had been under pressure from the EU. But the bloc denied the charges and later ordered the companies to refrain from commenting on the issue.

To find out why AsiaSat pulled the plug, Press TV contacted the satellite communication company. Its corporate affairs manager, Winnie Pang, promised to e-mail a statement to Press TV's newsroom director Hamid-Reza Emadi, but he did not receive any e-mails. They called the company to pursue the matter, where the manager said that the company had no comment on the issues of whether the US had ordered the company to take Iranian channels off the air.</media:text>

Reuters news agency sources revealed that Royal Dutch Shell Company aims to circumvent international sanctions imposed on Iran by concluding a swap deal through which it would pay its debt to the Iranian national oil company.

Reporter, Female #2
In an attempt to tighten the noose on Iran so it gives up its nuclear program, early this year the European Union added its voice to that of the United States by imposing sanctions on the government of Tehran that include prohibiting the import of Iranian oil. European countries granted their oil companies a 6-month grace period to adhere to the sanctions. During the grace period, these companies worked on gradually decreasing their dependence on Iranian oil. As large companies stopped buying Tehran's oil, sources revealed to Reuters agency that the Royal Dutch Shell company, Tehran's second largest customer that imports 100,000 barrels of Iranian oil per day continued to purchase oil until the sanctions went into effect on July 1st. As the scope of the sanctions was expanded to prohibiting financial transactions with Iranian banks and companies, Shell was unable to pay its dues, amounting to 1.4 billion dollars, to the Iranian national oil company, especially after the British government refused to give the company permission to pay off this debt through bank transfers. These sanctions forced Royal Dutch Shell to look for other means to settle its debt. According to Reuters, the company is currently trying to arrange a grain barter deal through the American agribusiness Cargill. Through this deal, Shell would deliver grains to Iran worth 1.4 billion dollars, or what amounts to nearly 80 percent of Iran's yearly import of grains. Shell hopes the deal receives the approval of the American, British and Dutch authorities since the export of grains, food products and essential supplies to Iran is permitted on humanitarian grounds despite the sanctions.</media:text>

Reporter, Female #2
European countries granted their oil companies a six-month grace period to adhere to the sanctions. During the grace period, these companies worked on gradually decreasing their dependence on Iranian oil.

Reporter, Female #2
As large companies stopped buying Tehran's oil, sources revealed to Reuters agency that the Royal Dutch Shell company, Tehran's second largest customer that imports 100,000 barrels of Iranian oil per day, continued to purchase oil until the sanctions went into effect on July 1st.

Reporter, Female #2
As the scope of the sanctions was expanded to prohibiting financial transactions with Iranian banks and companies, Shell was unable to pay its dues, amounting to 1.4 billion dollars, to the Iranian national oil company, especially after the British government refused to give the company permission to pay off this debt through bank transfers.

Reporter, Female #2
These sanctions forced Royal Dutch Shell to look for other means to settle its debt. According to Reuters, the company is currently trying to arrange a grain barter deal through the American agribusiness Cargill.

Reporter, Female #2
Through this deal, Shell would deliver grains to Iran worth 1.4 billion dollars, or what amounts to nearly 80 percent of Iran's yearly import of grains. Shell hopes the deal receives the approval of the American, British, and Dutch authorities, since the export of grains, food products, and essential supplies to Iran is permitted on humanitarian grounds, despite the sanctions.</media:text>

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz revealed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman warned the European Union's High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs, Catherine Ashton, of the consequences the National Authority will face if it insists on seeking an observer status for Palestine at the United Nations.

Presenter, Male #1
The Israeli newspaper reported that an official, described as a heavyweight in the Israeli government, stated that Netanyahu and Lieberman said that this move will be a step toward changing the rules of the game to push for unilateral Israeli procedures. The newspaper quoted Lieberman saying that Israel will completely sever all collaboration with President Mahmoud Abbas as it did with his predecessor, Yasser Arafat.

Presenter, Male #1
To talk more about this subject, we are joined over the phone by the President of the Democratic Front for Peace and Equality, Mr. Mohammed Barakeh, from the city of al-Nasira. Blessed holiday, Mr.Barakeh. How would you explain the statements of Lieberman and Netanyahu?

Guest, Male #2
Greetings to you, and to our Palestinian people. We hope to be able to celebrate this blessed holiday in a better environment, and to embark on the path of ending the occupation and establishing our state. Lieberman and Netanyahu's statements are not surprising at all. We don't think one can rely on these two officials to launch any new political process. It seems that their alliance under one list in the upcoming elections of the Knesset, which will be held on January 22nd, is a practically a declaration of war on any solution or peaceful settlement.

Guest, Male #2
Their list represents a policy of aggression. Lieberman and Netanyahu's discourse on what they call the dangers of accepting Palestine as an observer member state at the United Nations points that they panicking over this move since it changes the reference points of the negotiations.

Guest, Male #2
Palestinian land is not a disputed land, and Israel won't be able to claim it is willing to renounce this piece of land. It is recognized by the United Nations as an occupied country. This changes all the rules of the game, and this is what Netanyahu does not want.

Guest, Male #2
The other issue is they fear accepting Palestine as an observer state at the United Nations because it change its ability to maneuver in the framework of international institutions, such as the International Court of Justice, the Criminal Court, and others. I think this opposition means that Israel wants to continue to practice its crimes on the Palestinian people with impunity. I believe that these two officials are cause for concern for the Palestinian people.</media:text>

The Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority, Dr. Salam Fayyad, announced a new action plan that will set out the objectives of bilateral relations with the European Union. The announcement came after Fayyad held negotiations with the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton. The plan aims to specify the relationship between the European Union and the Palestinian Authority for the next five years.

Reporter, Female #2
During her Middle Eastern tour, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton headed to Ramallah. Ashton concluded her negotiations with the Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority, Dr. Salam Fayyad, by agreeing to a new action plan that aims to determine the bilateral relations between the European Union and Palestine for the next five years.

Guest, Male #1 (Dr. Salam Fayyad, Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority)
This plan represents our quest for a strategic partnership with the European Union. Palestinians view this partnership as very important to attaining just and durable peace in our region, which includes the establishment of a fully sovereign, democratic, and viable Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Reporter, Female #2
Fayyad took advantage of the opportunity to express his deep gratitude for the European Union's support of the Palestinian Authority. Ashton viewed the plan as a new phase in a partnership she described as distinct. Ashton added that such a plan reflects the European Union's response to the changes in the region.

Guest, Female #3 (Catherine Ashton, European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs)
We believe in a two state solution, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and a safe Israeli state. We will continue to work towards this goal in the coming days.

Reporter, Female #2
The new plan includes funds and economic development aid to sustain the Palestinian Authority. The action plan also provides a work program between the European Union and the Palestinian Authority in various sectors, including internal affairs, trade, energy, water and transportation. The first similar agreement between the two sides was signed in 2005. It was renewed until a new action plan was drafted. Janay Boulos, BBC.</media:text>

The issue of blocking Syrian satellite channels is raising questions.

Reporter, Male #1
Once again, Syrian media is under attack. Journalists are being targeted, and media institutions are being suspended from satellite broadcasting systems. The Syrian government announced that the administration of the European satellite Hotbird blocked Syrian TV and the Drama channel, implementing previous sanctions imposed by the Arab League and the European Union on Syrian media. It forced those involved to invite their viewers to get the signal from the Russian satellite.

Reporter, Male #1
This decision raised a series of questions in Syria revolving around the issues of freedom of the media, double standards, and how some express anger over the jamming of some channels, while others decide to cancel official media outlets without any credible reasons.

Guest, Male #2
As media professionals and researchers, we see many media channels in the world, some of which are also insulting and immoral, but they're available on satellite. At the same time, a voice is silenced, like the voices of the Syrian satellite channel and the Drama channel. If we were to say the Syrian satellite channel is insulting, then why was the Drama channel also blocked? What does that channel offer? What does the Drama channel offer in general? The problem lies in the double standards that are used. There are clear, honest, and absolute double standards.

Guest, Male #2
The political principles of the West are now being adopted in the media. We are speaking out because we're proud of our media. Our media has been successful, and has developed. It presents a real and rational image. But they just want one voice to be heard: The voice of demagoguery, the voice of the jungle, it's the jungle they represent.

Reporter, Male #1
It is surprising that the Drama satellite channel was blocked, a channel that only broadcasts art shows.

Guest, Male #3
Syrian journalists and Syrian TV personnel say that had it not been for the power and influence of the satellite channel, which broadcasts the truth, then serious efforts to block it would not have been exerted by Arab and Western satellite providers.</media:text>

<description>The latest demonstrations against austerity measures in Greece have led to some clashes between protesters and police. Four thousand officers have been deployed to protect parliament and government ministries. Thousands of people have been gathering in central Athens amid a general strike, the second major walkout in three weeks. A 65-year-old activist at the demonstration died of an apparent heart attack. He was not thought to have been close to the main clashes with police. Many protesters want to send a clear message to EU leaders saying &quot;no&quot; to further austerity. Ships have stayed in port, public transport in the capital has been disrupted, hospitals have been operating on emergency-only, while public offices and many shops have remained closed. Several marches have been planned to coincide with the 24-hour stoppage, called by the two largest unions. Greece is planning 11.5 billion euros of cuts to secure its next batch of bailout aid. The leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, confirmed that the attempts of the West to subjugate the Iranian population will fail. During a meeting with a number of officials in northeast Iran's province of Khorasan, Ayatollah Khamenei said the Iranian people are stronger than all the games the West is playing, adding that Western claims that Iran abandoned the negotiations is a lie. He said Tehran did not abandon the negotiations, including those regarding its nuclear program. Ayatollah Khamenei warned of getting pulled into the disinformation that is being waged by Zionist institutions that control the Western media.

Iran considered the European sanctions imposed on it as illegal and inhuman, because they target the Iranian people. China also rejected the new embargo, saying it does not help solve the issues, but further complicates them. The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton said she is hoping that intensifying the pressure on Iran will persuade the country to make concessions, and resume negotiations soon.

Reporter, Male #2
The European Union's decision to impose new sanctions on Iran, hitting the banking, maritime shipping, and industrial sectors, under the pretext of its peaceful nuclear program, was confronted by the reactions of Iranian officials. Iran, which has been facing collective forms of sanctions since the victory of its Islamic revolution and before possessing a nuclear program, is still facing unilateral sanctions under the pretext of this program. This renders these sanctions illegal and inhuman, since they target the Iranian population.

Guest, Male #3 (Ramin Mehmanparast, Iranian Deputy Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
Iran presented a package of proposals to the P5+1 group at the Moscow meeting. European nations have regarded it as comprehensive and constructive. We have requested a response to the proposals, but they have yet to provide an answer. Sadly, instead of pursuing negotiations, they reverted to repeating their past mistakes. They think that by applying pressure and using threats, they will accomplish gains during the negotiations. But we invite them to stop these practices and to return to positive negotiations. The opportunity is available to settle the issues in a manner that guarantees our legitimate rights, and removes the doubts of Western nations.

Reporter, Male #2
Iranian officials confirmed that EU sanctions will affect European nations first, saying the policies of the West will not affect the solid Iranian economy. Rather, they will propel Iran to focus on self-sufficiency in all fields, and to push for scientific advancement to fill the shortage in the country.

Guest, Male #4 (Dr. Haidar Borshahrdani, Iranian Parliament National Security Committee Member)
The Iranian economy is very solid, and will not be affected by Western sanctions. We will turn these sanctions into an opportunity to fulfill self-sufficiency in different fields. European citizens and companies will be harmed by these sanctions, especially as the winter is approaching, and they will be deprived from a large portion of Iranian gas.

Reporter, Male #2
China rejected the European sanctions on Iran.

Guest, Male #5 (Hong Lei, China's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson)
We oppose unilateral sanctions against Iran. We think that using sanctions to place pressure cannot solve the Iranian nuclear issue in an essential manner. They could further complicate the issue, and escalate the confrontation. We hope all concerned parties will show flexibility, increase communication, and aim for a new round of negotiations as soon as possible.

In Syria, the battles are continuing as new sanctions were imposed by the European Union. Damascus denies using cluster bombs in the conflict, and assures that it does not own these types of bombs. And on a tour to the region, UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi is delivering Iranian proposals to solve the Syrian crisis.

Reporter, Female #2
UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi denies he suggested sending a peacekeeping force to Syria. Ibrahimi's statement was issued from Baghdad, which he traveled to with Iranian proposals, and where he met with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Al-Maliki called on Brahimi to take action quickly to preserve Syria's unity and the security of the region, as he warned the UN-Arab League envoy of Syria's crisis, considering it a danger to its people, neighbors, and world peace.

Reporter, Female #2
Brahimi had met with a number of Iranian officials and received Iranian proposals, which according to Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian includes a transition phase in Syria under the supervision of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that would lead to presidential and parliamentary elections. The proposals also includes ending the violence, implementing a cease-fire, and an end to sending weapons and endorsing armed groups, and conducting a national dialogue between the opposition and the government.

Guest, Male #1 (Lakhdar Brahimi, UN-Arab League Envoy)
There are some ideas in your proposals which can help by adding to that forwarded by other nations who are also important with regards to the Syrian situation.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius announced that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov informed France that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will never leave and will remain until further notice, noting that Russia's stance in favor of al-Assad is becoming increasingly stubborn. Fabius' words came after a European Union meeting imposing additional sanctions on Syrian figures and companies. In Doha, the opposition General Secretariat of the Syrian National Council held meetings presided by Abdelbaset Sieda to discuss the situation on the ground and the political situation in Syria, in addition to relief efforts for refugees.

At the Turkish border, the new confrontation was with planes. Ankara said that its military fighter jets forced an Armenian plane to land in the eastern part of the country to search it before heading to the Syrian city of Aleppo. The Armenian Yerevan was quick to deny the stance by announcing that the Armenian cargo plane was transporting humanitarian aid to Syria, and had asked permission to use Turkish airspace beforehand, and that it was agreed that it would land in a Turkish airport.

Reporter, Female #2
On the ground, Syrian opposition websites posted scenes of a massacre that it said occurred in Daraya in the countryside of Damascus by the Syrian regime. In Aleppo, eight soldiers from the regime's army were killed in an attack by a booby-trapped car that opponents had set up at a Syrian army checkpoint at the entrance of the city. In Idlib, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that clashes are continuing for the third consecutive day near the largest military base in the region, the Wadi Daif base in Maarat al-Numaan.

Reporter, Female #2
On the other hand, Syrian TV said that Bashar al-Assad issued a decree to form a committee to repair the Great Umayyad Mosque in Aleppo, which is the oldest historical Islamic landmark in Syria, and was burned due to clashes in the mosque. Syrian TV showed images from inside the mosque and said that opposition fighters had wreaked havoc to its contents, as opposition websites denied that the Free Army had lost control of the mosque.</media:text>

Haaretz newspaper reported that the European Union's decision to consider a number of settlements as illegal, and deprive them of tax breaks, fostered Israeli outrage countrywide. The Israeli Foreign Ministry claimed that the European Union suddenly ended the long and ongoing negotiations around this subject, and made a decision unilaterally.

Reporter, Male #2
After leaks from the media about the EU decision to oblige shop owners to place a label on products coming from Israeli settlements, worry began creep into the Israeli government. They fear the implementation of this decision and its consequences may add insult to injury, a reference to the economic crisis that Israel has been suffering this year.

Guest, Male #3 (Salah Haniyeh, Palestinian Society for Consumer Protection)
This is an important message. It started in the year 2000. The European Union is preventing tariff cuts to settlement products. However, this issue escalated, where it has become necessary to label these products. It is an important message of solidarity with the Palestinian people. It is a message that insists that settlements are illegitimate and illegal. And not only are they rejected internationally, they are rejected by Palestine. This is a victory to the Palestinian people in light of the obstructions on the political front.

Reporter, Male #2
Media sources mentioned that Danish Foreign Minister Villy Sovndal is leading an initiative to apply rules that force European chain stores to place clear labels on Israeli settlement products. This initiative is based on a decision made last May, with consensus from foreign ministers of European Union countries.

Guest, Male #4 (Mustafa Barghouti, Secretary-General of the Palestinian National Initiative)
I am sure that what will happen is a big development in the campaign to support the Palestinian people. We see today as a match and combination of the Palestinian popular resistance with the solidarity movement and the sanctions imposed on Israel. There is no other way to change the balance of power. There is no other way to liberate the Palestinian people from this slavery, represented by the Israeli apartheid regime.

Reporter, Male #2
Israeli concerns about the European Union adopting this decision are increasing. In the future, this may end up encouraging a complete boycott of all Israeli products, including those produced in Israel.

Reporter, Male #2
It is a new blow to Israel from those who believe in our people's legitimate rights, and those who despise this oppressive occupier's policies. This blow was only possible through Palestinian diplomatic activities on a global level. From Ramallah, Haroun Amaireh, Palestine TV.</media:text>

The Syrian Network for Human Rights said that 31 people were killed today in shelling by Syrian regime forces on different areas.

Presenter, Male #1
According to local coordination committees, artillery shelling has resumed on several neighborhoods of Deir az-Zour. Activists spoke of shelling that targeted Kafranbel in Idlib, and the Kallasa neighborhood in the center of Aleppo. They also reported the outbreak of clashes between the two armies, the regime's army and the Free Army, near Neirab Airport in Aleppo.

Reporter, Male #2
Activists say that the city of Zabadani, in the Damascus countryside, has been pounded by artillery for over 80 days. Regime tanks are stationed atop two mountains overlooking the city, putting all of its neighborhoods in the line of fire.

Reporter, Male #2
Around 100 shells fell on several areas this morning. Yesterday, a total of 400 shells were counted. In Homs, a scene without shelling might appear unnatural, since activists say the areas there are shelled daily. Among them are al-Ghant, al-Rastan, and both neighborhoods of Jobar and al-Sultaniyya.

Reporter, Male #2
Conditions have not changed in the city of Abu Kamal. The shelling continues. In Khan Shaykhun in Idlib, wherever the camera is pointed, it captures images of shells pounding the town. In Hama, Aleppo Street has been subjected to an assault operation by regime forces since this morning. In the nearby neighborhood of Mashael al-Arbaeen, bulldozers and heavy machinery were demolishing homes. Activists say that the homes belong to families whose only guilt is supporting the revolution.

Presenter, Male #1
Given this climate, the United Nations expect the number of Syrian refugees in surrounding countries to rise to 700,000 by the end of the current year, 2012.

Presenter, Female #1
This figure greatly exceeds previous estimates by the High Commissioner for Refugees at the United Nations. The regional coordinator for the commissioner said the refugees who escaped the crisis that has been ongoing in their country for 18 months, are centered in four countries that neighbor Syria: Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, and Turkey. The commissioner will present a comprehensive plan regarding the refugees after they are finished with the registration procedures, which are taking place in the camps in the aforementioned countries.

On the humanitarian level, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid at the European Union, Kristalina Georgieva, said that the escalating violence in Syria, and the difficulty of reaching civilians in need, hinder the distribution of humanitarian aid in the country.

Presenter, Female #1
The European Union estimates that 2.5 million Syrians are in need of humanitarian aid, among them 1.2 million who fled their homes.

Presenter, Male #1
The European Union official highlighted the need for further ease of movement within Syria, so that the Union can boost its efforts. She stressed the dire need to hold higher-level negotiations that would allow aid workers to reach the needy, especially since there seems to be no horizon to the end of the crisis, and since the winter season is approaching.

Presenter, Female #1
Despite the fact that the European Union has provided 287 million dollars for humanitarian efforts in Syria, Georgieva asserted the need for further donations to meet the growing needs.

Presenter, Male #1
All of the sides in the conflict also renewed their calls to adhere to international law. This would allow relief workers to reach conflict zones to evacuate civilians and the injured.</media:text>

<media:text>One of the main issues of the 67th UN General Assembly meeting in New York this week is the Iranian nuclear program. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is already in New York. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon made a point to welcome the Iranian president to the UN headquarters, but reportedly warned Ahmadinejad against fiery rhetoric. Western countries have called for the European Union to place more sanctions on Iran in an effort to curb its nuclear program. Other issues on the agenda are a special Security Council meeting on Syria, and another Palestinian Authority bid for statehood in the UN.</media:text>

Rockets, shells, and massacres. All of them spell a single word: Killing. Dozens of people were killed or injured after two buildings were completely destroyed by explosive barrels dropped by Assad's planes on the al-Mayser neighborhood in Aleppo. The bombardment also targeted the neighborhoods of al-Sukkari and al-Qaterji, as well as other areas in Aleppo's countryside.

In Idlib Province, regime shelling sparked fires in a number of buildings. In the town of Qastoun in Hama's countryside, Assad's tanks indiscriminately shelled the residents' homes. In Deir az-Zour, dozens were killed in a raid by the regime air force using Russian-made MiG planes on a school housing refugees in the town of al-Souaia. During a visit to the European Union's headquarters, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi reiterated that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad must step down.

Guest, Male #4
We insist that the regime must change in Syria. That's what we have agreed upon with the European Union today, that we are all against what's being perpetrated by the regime, not only in words and statements, but also with persistence and action. It will take all kinds of pressure on this regime in order to allow Syrians to decide for themselves. This regime has no place in Syria after the killings and bloodshed committed against Syrians.</media:text>
