----

Israel is continuing to pound the Gaza Strip with air strikes amid fears it could soon launch a ground invasion into Gaza. Israeli troops, tanks and armored personnel carriers are now massing near the Palestinian territory. Earlier today, 85 missiles exploded within 45 minutes in Gaza City, sending black pillars of smoke. At least 21 Palestinians have died in the most recent round of violence while three Israelis died on Thursday. Israel said it launched 150 air strikes overnight while Israel has started to draft 30,000 reserve troops in a sign the assault may soon widen. Among the casualties of Israeli violence was the 11-month-old son of a BBC Arabic journalist, Jihad Misharawi. Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Kandil traveled to Gaza today to condemn the Israeli attack. For more, we get a report from Rafah by Palestinian journalist Mohammed Omer, who says, &quot; One thing that we ought to talk about here is the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. This is a situation of targeting a population of civilians. Exactly like Israel is shooting in a fishbowl. And there is no shelter. There is nowhere to run for the general population. Gaza is living in a very dire situation.&quot; We also speak with Gershon Baskin, the founder of the Israel Palestine Center for Research and Information, who was the initiator of the secret talks between Israel and Hamas for the release of Israeli soldier Gilead Schalit. Omer adds, &quot;I was just driving from Gaza City to Khan Yunis in the South, and the streets are entirely empty. There is no people walking in the streets, because the air strikes are bombing everything that moves. Everything that moves in the streets is being bombed and attacked. And this makes things quite difficult for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.&quot; </media:text>

<description>Egyptian political forces are organizing demonstrations and marches after tomorrow's Friday prayers from all the republic's mosques to denounce the latest Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip. On Thursday afternoon, a demonstration took off from in front of Omar al-Mukarram Mosque in Tahrir Square. It demanded further escalation against Israel and endorsed Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi's decision to recall the Egyptian ambassador from Tel Aviv. It also handed a strongly-worded letter of protest to the Israeli ambassador in Cairo. Unprecedented slogans were heard during the protest, as demonstrators chanted for opening the door to Jihad, or struggle, and demanded to forcefully end the Israeli siege on the strip.</description>

<media:text>Egyptian political forces are organizing demonstrations and marches after tomorrow's Friday prayers from all the republic's mosques to denounce the latest Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip. Unprecedented slogans were heard during the protest, as demonstrators chanted for opening the door to Jihad, or struggle, and demanded to forcefully end the Israeli siege on the strip.

----

Supplications and funeral prayers were held for the victims of the Israeli raids on the Gaza Strip.
They are part of actions launched from the Omar al- Mukarram Mosque in the heart of Tahrir Square.

Muath Abd al-Karim, Revolution Youth Coalition
In reality, the reaction that was adopted so far is a diplomatic response.
I think Egypt must show its soft power to convince the Israelis to stop these childish acts that are only happening so they can score political points before the elections.
&quot;From Marrakesh to Bahrain, from Marrakesh to Bahrain&quot;

This popular mobilization comes after the Egyptian authorities' series of escalations.

At the forefront is President Mohammad Morsi's decision to withdraw the Egyptian ambassador from Tel Aviv and to deliver a strongly-worded letter of protest to the Israeli ambassador in Cairo.
Ahmed Subei, Freedom and Justice Party media advisor
We think it is President Mohammad Morsi's first step before more action can be taken to support the Palestinian people's right to life.
What happened yesterday in the Gaza Strip is an ongoing Zionist crime.
Zionists and Israel must know that the days of submission are over, and no longer have a place in Egypt.
The Egyptian people took to the streets in 2008 and 2009 against the Zionist aggression on the Gaza Strip at a time they were living under an authoritarian regime that was preventing this popular mobilization.
But today the people, and state officials and the country’s president are in harmony.
Chants: &quot;We're going to al-Aqsa…martyrs by the millions&quot;
The demonstration that was called for by some political and revolutionary movements took off from Tahrir Square and heading toward the Arab League to present its demands.
Dr. Salah Sultan, Secretary General for the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs
I demand the Arab League to activate the joint defense agreement, and to encourage the youth and men to join the ranks of the battalions, and the ranks of the army.
From in front of the Arab League, I call on all Arab armies to prepare for the battle of liberation.
The Arab League will hold an urgent ministerial meeting in Cairo on Saturday to discuss ways to respond to the Israeli escalation against the Gaza Strip.
And, perhaps, to look into a response to some of the popular demands of the demonstrators.
 Atiya Nabil, BBC, Cairo.

<media:text>With Palestinian militant rockets continuing to rain down on Israel, Israel's army is making no secret of the fact it is preparing to take tougher action. Dozens of tanks and armored personnel carriers have been moved close to the Gaza border to ready for a possible ground assault into the enclave. Israel's prime minister said he is determined to bring an end to the attacks. &quot; In the past 24 hours Israel has made it clear that it will not tolerate rocket and missile attack on civilians. I hope that Hamas and the other terror organizations in Gaza got the message. If not, Israel is prepared to take whatever action is necessary to defend our people,&quot; said Benjamin Netanyahu. For now Israel's response has been limited to what it calls precision airstrikes by warplanes on strategic targets in and around Gaza city. Israel's army spokeswoman says they are prepared to push on if needed: &quot; All the options are on the table, including the possibility of a ground operation, we have alerted some of our reserve units and we are considering our next steps currently. We are striking various targets from the air, targets of either caches of rockets, storage's of rockets, underground tunnels used to store rockets and other targets,&quot; said Lieutenant Colonel Avital Leibovich. Israel has signaled it will not attack Gaza during a one-day visit by Egypt's prime minister. But any move on the ground by Israel could push the conflict into all-out war. </media:text>

Former American President Jimmy Carter said that Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi assured him that Egypt is committed to the peace treaty with Israel, although he wants to amend it. Carter added that Morsi is aware that any changes or amendments to the Camp David Treaty must be recognized by both countries.

Presenter, Male #1
Carter, who sponsored the Camp David Agreement when he was president of the United States, met with Morsi during his visit to Cairo as a member of the international Elders group. The delegation includes former Irish President Mary Robinson, and former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland. On the other hand, former American President Jimmy Carter expressed concern over the delay in completing the Egyptian constitution; however, he praised the steps taken by the Egyptian president during the first 100 days of his rule.

Guest, Male #2 (Jimmy Carter, Former American President)
I have been truly surprised at the progress that president Morsi has made, because I thought that when I came back for this meeting, the military would still be in charge. And now we have seen that because of his wise leadership and bold leadership, that part of the dreams of the Egyptian people have been realized. That we are now on the road, which I think cannot be reversed, to real democracy and respect for human rights, and civilian control of the government, that it's controlled by leaders that have been elected by you, the people. I don't think that there will be turning back.</media:text>

<media:text>Egypt insists that its recent deployment of troops in Sinai was fully coordinated with Israel and did not violate the peace treaty between the two countries. This is according to the al-Masry al-Youm newspaper, which quoted a member of Egypt's higher ruling military council as saying that Egyptian forces entered Sinai only following consultations with Israel, adding that Egypt is committed to the Camp David Accords. A senior Israeli source at the prime minister's office told our Al Jazeera correspondent that Tel Aviv sent a letter to Cairo, via the White House, calling for the immediate withdrawal of the Egyptian army's tanks from Sinai.

Egypt has stepped up its military presence in the region as part of Operation Eagle, aimed at purging &quot;armed terrorists&quot; following the recent Rafah attack.

Reporter, Female #2
Is it a warning sign of a looming crisis between Israel and post-revolution Egypt under the Brotherhood's reign? And will Cairo respond to Tel Aviv's request, sent via Washington, to withdraw the Egyptian army's tanks from Sinai? Israel considers the deployment of heavy arms for the first time in the region since the Camp David Accords were signed, even if part of a wide-scale cleansing operation against terrorists, as a serious violation of the peace treaty between the two sides, especially considering that Egypt acted with no prior consultation with Israel.

Reporter, Female #2
The message comes one day after Israel deployed anti-missile system batteries in the city of Eilat in response to the Egyptian army's deployment of anti-aircraft missiles in Sinai. The Israeli diplomatic escalation also comes after the recent visit by the new commander of the Egyptian armed forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, to the volatile Sinai Peninsula. Al-Sisi is directly overseeing the final preparatory plans to step up Operation Eagle that is underway in the area. President Mohamed Morsi said that al-Sisi is personally leading the operation in Sinai. The plan includes the use of military aircrafts and rocket launchers with the aim of purging the area from armed militants.

Reporter, Female #2
It's undeniable that the killing of the 16 Egyptian soldiers by members of what has become known as the Salafi-Jihadist Front in Sinai has placed Egypt in an awkward position. The Egyptian government is obligated to maintain security, which is subject to an escalation at any time. In doing so, Egypt is trying to prevent militants from provoking Israel in a bid to drag it into carrying out a military action in Sinai, and consequently engage in a military confrontation with Egypt. And this exactly what Cairo and Tel Aviv are trying to avoid, at least for now.

Joining us from Jerusalem is our correspondent Elias Karram. Elias, why did Israel take this position, and why now?

Guest, Male #2 (Elias Karram, Al Jazeera Correspondent in Jerusalem)
Honestly, Israel is facing a real dilemma. On one hand, Israel wants the Egyptian army to continue its military operation in the Sinai Peninsula and purge the area of what Israel is referring to as &quot;terror cells.&quot; But on the other hand, Israel fears that the Egyptian army will not withdraw its forces from Sinai after completing its operation.

Guest, Male #2
Israel fears that the Egyptian army will create a new state of affairs that contradict what was agreed upon in the military provisions of the Camp David Peace Accords between the two sides. Israel will have no choice but to deal with this new reality on the ground. This may lead to the launch of a new round of negotiations, especially considering that Egypt may demand to renegotiate the military provisions of the Camp David Accords.

Guest, Male #2
Israel asked the US administration, or the White House, to mount pressure on the Egyptian army and the political decision-making body in Cairo to ensure the withdrawal of the Egyptian forces after the completion of their military operation. They also want to ensure that Egypt will not deploy any forces or military machinery without consulting Israel first. In the past few weeks, Israel has allowed the Egyptian army to deploy a limited number of tanks and fighter jets. However, it seems that the Egyptian army sent more reinforcements than were permitted by Israel. And this is where Israeli fears and concerns originate.</media:text>

In Egypt, the Cairo Criminal Court issued a verdict to imprison former Minister of Petroleum Sameh Fahmy, fugitive businessman Hussein Salem, and five other former high-ranking officials in the Ministry of Petroleum. While the civil lawyers welcomed the verdicts, the defense lawyers decided to appeal the decisions. As for the relatives of the defendants, they had another opinion.

Immediately after the announcement of the verdict to imprison seven officials for a total of 50 years, a storm of anger took over the relatives of the former high-ranking officials, who are accused of squandering public money by selling Egyptian gas to Israel at a low price. The biggest share of the verdict was for Sameh Fahmy, former Minister of Petroleum, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Fugitive businessman Hussein Salem received the same sentence.

This is the first case in Egypt in which ministers of the petroleum industry have been sentenced. They sold the country's resources very cheaply. This can be considered a warning and a vow to anyone who intends to do such a thing in Egypt in the future, and it is a big success for the revolution.

Reporter, Male #1
The verdict's announcement was preceded by tight security measures, and came after 49 hearings over an entire year. With these verdicts, the case of exporting gas to Israel is closed, following seven years of popular disapproval and political turmoil. This turmoil came about after Egypt signed a treaty in 2005 to sell gas to Israel at prices well below international market prices. This brought losses to Egypt estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars. Samir Hassan, Al Jazeera, Cairo.

Egyptian media sources revealed that in a secret dialogue last week, presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq assured American politicians that he would crush the revolutionaries and execute them if they oppose the election results, and that he would not abandon Mubarak. Newspapers also uncovered Shafiq's threats that he will deploy the army and tanks into the streets, if protests erupt against him if he wins the runoff elections.

Reporter, Male #1
In between building a new republic and returning to the oppressive past, Egypt is witnessing a political disappointment in light of the heated electoral battle between Mohamed Morsy and Ahmed Shafiq. Despite what appears to be a likely triumph of Morsy, versus a slim chance of Shafiq gaining more votes, the role of regional and international players and their plans will make it difficult to predict the election results thus far. Political observers believe it has become certain that Lieutenant General Shafiq, backed by the military institution and affiliated with the former regime, will not win the battle against Morsy in the runoff, unless foreign powers interfere in the matter.

Reporter, Male #1
This information was confirmed in a secret meeting last week between Shafiq and American officials and businessmen. Shafiq assured them that he will crush the revolutionaries if they oppose the election results. He considers Mubarak his role model and he will never abandon him.

Al-Aswani confirmed that Shafiq pledged to the US to protect its interests, repress the forces rejecting the US projects, fight the Islamic movement, and prevent it from spreading.

For his part, Major-General Mohsen el-Fangary, member of the Supreme Council of Armed Forces, called on the people to question Shafiq regarding his statements saying he will send the army and tanks into the streets to protect him, if the people oppose his victory in the elections.

Reporter, Male #1
In this context, the Jerusalem Post, quoting Raphael Israeli, a specialist in the Middle Eastern affairs in the Israeli entity, considered Shafiq to be Israel's only hope. The newspapers explained that many Egyptians consider Shafiq a modified version of Mubarak. It asserted that the decision-makers in the Israeli entity view Shafiq, pragmatically and morally, as the continuation of the deposed president's alliance with Washington, and what it referred to as a strategic partnership with Israel. Amid these dangerous developments of Shafiq's ideology and methodology, political observers believe that abandoning the square was a strategic mistake in the path of the Egyptian revolution. They also believe that the upcoming phase calls for popular and political coalitions in order to protect the revolution and its goals.</media:text>

Three foreigners and an Egyptian smuggler were moderately wounded in the ensuing exchange. According to Be'er Sheva hospital officials, the three foreigners are of Chinese origin. The Southern Command's elite Rimon Reconnaissance Unit was recently formed to monitor the border with Egypt, and was involved in the incident.</media:text>

        <media:text>Joining IBA in the studio to discuss the situation in Syria is Dr. Jonathan Spyer of the IDC Global Research in International Affairs Center. Jordanians are burning Israeli flags in the streets in protest of the peace treaty between the two countries, and Israel's other partner in peace in Egypt is obviously in a very volatile situation ahead of the elections there. IBA discusses Syria and Kofi Annan's six-point peace plan and speaks with Dr. Spyer about the UN observers' recording of ceasefire violations, and also asks, &quot;How much does the danger of rising Islamic forces pose to the state of Israel?&quot;

Dr. Spyer believes the Hashemite monarchy is still in control of the situation in Jordan in spite of protests in the tribal areas that form the basis of support for the monarchy. However, in Egypt, Islamists won a landslide 75 percent of the parliament, which means a significantly deteriorating situation for Israel since it will be busy with its own internal unrest for the foreseeable future. He also thinks that the observer mission and the six-point Annan plan is making &quot;no difference whatsoever&quot; to the reality in Syria, and says that &quot;Syria is in a state of civil war, and it's going to take a lot more than Kofi Annan&quot; and Robert Mood to make any impact.</media:text>

A sense of relief is dominating the popular and political scene in Egypt. This comes after Egypt decided to terminate a controversial gas deal with Israel. Under the terms of the deal, Egypt would supply Israel with nearly half of its gas consumption at below market prices. In Egypt, conflicting reports have emerged over the reason behind the termination. While the Egyptian Oil Ministry attributed the halt to the terrorist attacks on the gas pipeline, others said the decision was caused by a delinquent payment, in which an intermediary oil company owed Egypt USD 100 million. In the spring of 2008, Egypt agreed to export natural gas to the Hebrew state for two decades, as mandated by a deal signed in 2005. Tawfiq Ahmed reports from Cairo.

Amid the state of turmoil sweeping Egypt, overwhelming joy has dominated the popular and political scene. This comes after Egypt terminated a gas deal with Israel, a deal that has been widely rejected by the Egyptian street.

This decision should have been made a long time ago. If people don't have enough gas for their homes, then why export it abroad?

Guest, Male #3
We have waited for this for a long time. This was a good decision.

Egyptian officials attributed the abrupt halt to a commercial rather than a political dispute. The East Mediterranean Gas Company, which exports gas to Israel, has failed to make monthly payments in the amount of USD 100 million to the General Petroleum Corporation and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company, rendering the deal null and void. The decision has raised several legal issues, which include the possibility of imposing sanctions on the Egyptian side due to a breach of contract.

Guest, Male #4 (Ali Hassan, Deputy Director General of the Middle East News Agency)
Egypt will not face any sanctions in case an international arbitration is launched. Egypt has every right to terminate this deal due to Israel's failure to meet its financial obligations toward Egypt.

Egypt started supplying Israel with natural gas in 2008, as mandated by a deal signed in 2005. The gas deal was widely rejected for several reasons. Among them is the price that Israel is paying for the gas, which is less than half its cost. The decision may further fuel the Egyptian-Israeli relationship that has been strained in post-revolution Egypt, which toppled Mubarak and his regime. However, the decision, though it was late, has brought comfort to the Egyptian scene regardless of its reason, be it commercial or political. Tawfiq Ahmed, Dubai TV, Cairo.

Israel, which imports nearly 40 percent of its gas needs from Egypt, said that termination of the gas deal was a business dispute, as confirmed by Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. Lieberman added the Egyptian decision was &quot;not a good sign,&quot; but it would be a mistake to turn it into a diplomatic dispute. He also affirmed Israel's commitment to upholding the peace treaty with Egypt. The 20-year-old gas deal was signed in 2005 between Egypt and Israel, under the context of the peace treaty brokered between the two sides. The deal sparked fierce protests before the former regime's ouster. This prompted the current government to review the gas export contracts with Israel. Critics argued that gas is being sold to Israel at a price far below the international market value.</media:text>

The Egyptian judiciary decided to halt the parliamentary decision to form a constitutional committee to draft the first post-revolution constitution. The court announced its decision to stop the formation of the committee, accepting the appeal submitted by movements, liberal parties, and public figures who opposed the committee. The appeal considered the parliament's decision to have members of the People's Assembly and the Shura Council to account for half of the committee members to be a wrong administrative decision, and an abuse of power. The formation of the committee caused a political crisis after the Freedom and Justice Party and al-Nour Party dominated the committee. Political parties and public figures withdrew from the committee, saying it does not represent all components of the Egyptian people.

And while the wave of reactions continues, condemning and rejecting the candidacy of the ousted Egyptian president's vice president and former head of intelligence, Omar Suleiman, for the presidential elections, scheduled for late next month, the Israeli entity welcomed his candidacy. It considered Suleiman to be the best man to preserve Israeli interests.

Reporter, Female #1
Since the ousted Egyptian president's vice president and former intelligence chief, Omar Suleiman, officially announced his candidacy for the first presidential elections since the downfall of Hosni Mubarak, the reactions on the Egyptian street continue. Egyptians are condemning and rejecting his candidacy that some see as a reproduction of the former regime, a counterrevolution, and a manipulation of the Egyptian people. They also see him as an integral part of a system the people revolted against, and rejected its figureheads. These harsh criticisms were met with an Israeli welcoming of Suleiman's candidacy. Labor party member and the occupation's former defense minister, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, viewed Suleiman as good for Israel, adding that Tel Aviv prefers Suleiman because he believes the Egyptian relationship with Israel is strategic. The occupation army's radio indicated that Tel Aviv views Suleiman's candidacy as a positive step towards preserving its interests. In addition, a member of the ruling Likud Party viewed Suleiman's candidacy as a positive change, considering him a man who can keep a balanced relationship with Israel; a relationship in which Suleiman can guarantee Israel's interests the way ousted President Hosni Mubarak did.

Reporter, Female #1
The Israeli occupation army's leading committees and intelligence agencies stressed the importance of exerting all efforts to maintain Suleiman in the spotlight, seeing he is the most important figure that Israel could rely on. They stressed that through their experience with Suleiman, he demonstrated unrivaled care for Israeli security interests in a manner that even exceeds Israeli ambitions. And seeing he was Mubarak's right hand man, and the most loyal person to him, as reported by the Israeli Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, Suleiman will be more attentive than others in looking after Israel's interests and maintaining the security of its settlers, as much as Mubarak did. In addition, Eitan Haber, a leading figure on the Israeli political scene, wrote that Mubarak deserves to be thanked and gratitude be expressed to him, because he prevented the death of thousands of Israelis by putting weapons aside and choosing the peaceful path.

Reporter, Female #1
Meanwhile, the office of the head of the occupation's government, Benjamin Netanyahu, made intensive phone calls with US Congress members and Jewish organizations to pressure the Obama administration to restore Suleiman to the forefront of current events. Suleiman, who is referred to as the second Mubarak in American newspapers, worked as the head of Egyptian intelligence for 18 years. Throughout that time, torture and human rights violations increased for regime dissenters. And according to Western journalist Stephen Grey, Suleiman is viewed as an intelligence director who turned his country into a backyard for the American intelligence agency. Suleiman received suspects the CIA had failed to extract confessions from, and he would personally oversee their violent extraction.</media:text>

Unknown assailants bombed the Egyptian pipeline that supplies gas to the Israeli entity and Jordan, in Sinai, west of the city of al-Arish. This is the 13th explosion since the eruption of the revolution. It comes as part of a series of attacks targeting the pipeline with the goal of preventing gas exports to the Israeli entity.

Reporter, Female #1
For the 13th time since last year's January 25th revolution, the Egyptian pipeline leading to the Israeli occupation entity was bombed. Security sources confirmed that six armed men placed explosive devices on the pipeline, leading to a series of explosions. Witnesses say the blasts were followed by fire and rising flames. Firemen rushed to the scene at the Massaeed area near the city of al-Arish, north of the Sinai Peninsula. Civil Defense Forces were only able to contain the fire hours later when the Gasco Company, that controls the pipeline, shut the valves in two of the gas terminals located near the fire and explosion site. Jordanian officials say the explosion led to a complete stop to the flow of gas to the kingdom for an unspecified period of time. The damage to the pipeline has not yet been assessed, and it is still unknown how long it will take to resume gas exports.

Reporter, Female #1
The pipeline that crosses the Sinai to deliver gas to the Israeli occupation entity and Jordan, has been bombed 12 times in one year, despite the new procedures that are announced by the authorities after every attack. A line started functioning again last week after an interruption caused by a similar attack on February 5th, but its extinguished flames were not able to put out the Egyptian people's anger and rage.

Reporter, Female #1
The anger stems from supplying the Israeli enemy gas as its army shells Gaza's neighborhoods and houses, and has been imposing a suffocating siege on the strip for years. After the revolution in Egypt, the issue of supplying gas to Israel has intensified popular and political criticism, especially since Israeli-Egyptian agreements signed during Mubarak's era led to supplying the occupation entity with Egyptian gas below market prices.

Reporter, Female #1
The Israeli entity imports 43 percent of its natural gas from Egypt. And despite investigations into the circumstances around the explosions, and the groups responsible for the attacks, Egyptian authorities have not yet been able to solve the mystery, with the exception of some accusations directed against the Bedouins of al-Sinai. They, in turn, accuse the Egyptian government of ignoring and marginalizing them, even after the revolution.</media:text>

<media:text>Joining me now in the studio to shed some light on the news on the day is Calev Ben-David, senior Israel correspondent for Bloomberg news. It is going to be a smorgasbord tonight because we have a lot to cover but let's start with Egypt-Israeli relations. After the Ilan Grapel and Gilad Shalit deals, is Egypt trying to repair its relationship with Israel, perhaps in an attempt to be a serious broker in the Middle East. Ben-David: Well, I'm not sure I would go far that far. There are some encouraging signs. We saw last week the renewal of the flow of natural gas into Israel from Egypt form this pipeline that has been attacked. But I think here it's a case, you know we have elections coming up in Egypt. Nobody knows what that new government is going to look like, and I think this present government run by the military wanted to basically get old business off the table before that new government came in. </media:text>

<media:text>In our top story at this hour, the prisoner exchange deal between Egypt and Israel is underway. Ilan Grape, who holds duel Israeli-American citizenship, is expected to be handed over to Israeli authorities within the hour. Ilan Grapel is on his way home. The Egypt-Israel prisoner exchange deal to secure the release of the dual US-Israeli national was set in motion this afternoon and the conclusion of this strange story should be wrapped up very soon, and perhaps even during this broadcast. Egypt has already release Grapel from prison, though he is still in Egyptian custody. He will be handed over to Israeli authorities for a debriefing and meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later today. </media:text>

<media:text>Barring any last minute snafu, Ilan Grapel will be released tomorrow morning at nine o'clock at the Taba crossing at the Israeli-Egyptian border. The Egyptian al-Ahram newspaper today reported that heavy security preparations are already underway in the area ahead of the release. To protect against terrorist elements in the Sinai, Grapel will reportedly be transported to Taba by a heavily armored security detail, which will be used to take Egyptian prisoners freed by Israel back to Cairo. </media:text>

US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta arrived in Cairo today amid much media speculation that he might be able to help free US-Israel Ilan Grapel who is being held in Egypt on charges of espionage for Israel. <media:text>US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta arrived in Israel this morning for a series of meetings related to major security issues as well as bilateral defense relations. On his way to Israel, Panetta warned that Israel is becoming increasingly isolated in the Middle East. The defense secretary encouraged Israel to make concessions by explaining that Jerusalem has a commitment from Washington to guarantee its security needs. Therefore, Israel should be willing to take risks for peace. This is Panetta's first Middle East trip since becoming Pentagon boss.
