<media:text>According to Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, the United States must change its approach toward the Arab world and help build a Palestinian state. In an interview with The New York Times, he said that if the US wants his country to honor its treaty with Israel, it must live up to its own Camp David commitment to Palestinian self-rule, signed in 1978, which was supposed to lead to full Palestinian sovereignty.</media:text>

Additional tanks and armored personnel carriers have been deployed along the southern border. Israeli officials have expressed fear that the Egyptian government may be trying to unilaterally alter the terms of the 1979 peace treaty with Israel, but they have so far refrained from issuing any official statements out of concern of straining relations with the new government of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.</media:text>

A sense of relief is dominating the popular and political scene in Egypt. This comes after Egypt decided to terminate a controversial gas deal with Israel. Under the terms of the deal, Egypt would supply Israel with nearly half of its gas consumption at below market prices. In Egypt, conflicting reports have emerged over the reason behind the termination. While the Egyptian Oil Ministry attributed the halt to the terrorist attacks on the gas pipeline, others said the decision was caused by a delinquent payment, in which an intermediary oil company owed Egypt USD 100 million. In the spring of 2008, Egypt agreed to export natural gas to the Hebrew state for two decades, as mandated by a deal signed in 2005. Tawfiq Ahmed reports from Cairo.

Amid the state of turmoil sweeping Egypt, overwhelming joy has dominated the popular and political scene. This comes after Egypt terminated a gas deal with Israel, a deal that has been widely rejected by the Egyptian street.

Guest, Male #2
This decision should have been made a long time ago. If people don't have enough gas for their homes, then why export it abroad?

Guest, Male #3
We have waited for this for a long time. This was a good decision.

Reporter, Male #1
Egyptian officials attributed the abrupt halt to a commercial rather than a political dispute. The East Mediterranean Gas Company, which exports gas to Israel, has failed to make monthly payments in the amount of USD 100 million to the General Petroleum Corporation and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company, rendering the deal null and void. The decision has raised several legal issues, which include the possibility of imposing sanctions on the Egyptian side due to a breach of contract.

Guest, Male #4 (Ali Hassan, Deputy Director General of the Middle East News Agency)
Egypt will not face any sanctions in case an international arbitration is launched. Egypt has every right to terminate this deal due to Israel's failure to meet its financial obligations toward Egypt.

Egypt started supplying Israel with natural gas in 2008, as mandated by a deal signed in 2005. The gas deal was widely rejected for several reasons. Among them is the price that Israel is paying for the gas, which is less than half its cost. The decision may further fuel the Egyptian-Israeli relationship that has been strained in post-revolution Egypt, which toppled Mubarak and his regime. However, the decision, though it was late, has brought comfort to the Egyptian scene regardless of its reason, be it commercial or political. Tawfiq Ahmed, Dubai TV, Cairo.

Presenter, Female #1
Israel, which imports nearly 40 percent of its gas needs from Egypt, said that termination of the gas deal was a business dispute, as confirmed by Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. Lieberman added the Egyptian decision was "not a good sign," but it would be a mistake to turn it into a diplomatic dispute. He also affirmed Israel's commitment to upholding the peace treaty with Egypt. The 20-year-old gas deal was signed in 2005 between Egypt and Israel, under the context of the peace treaty brokered between the two sides. The deal sparked fierce protests before the former regime's ouster. This prompted the current government to review the gas export contracts with Israel. Critics argued that gas is being sold to Israel at a price far below the international market value.</media:text>

<media:text>Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel is considering resuming the transfer of tax payments to the Palestinian Authority. Speaking before the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense committee today, the prime minister also said that Israel hopes to stabilize its peace agreement with Egypt. A month after Israel froze Palestinian tax revenues following UNESCO's acceptance of the PA as a full member, Israel is now considering releasing those funds, about 370 million shekels. Prime Minister Netanyahu told the Foreign Affairs and Defense committee today that he is contemplating the move because the Palestinians have refrained from pursuing further unilateral appeals to international organizations.

In the season of Islamic awakening: truth is born and the people's will shines to change the headlines, and of course, among those issues are the relations between the Israeli occupation entity and some Arab regimes. The beginning was similar in Cairo; the birth of a new Islamic awakening from the womb of current events and political repression. Then, the liberation of Egypt's sky from the Israeli flag began. And from Cairo to Amman, Jordan's capital, popular will was uninterrupted as the roar of popular anger reverberated to demand the departure of the occupation's ambassador from Jordan. The protests that started with the demand for change transformed Amman's streets into a platform to call for liberation. The liberation of the homeland from the presence of the Israeli occupation entity's embassy. Jordanians had a date with the revolution and intended to define their true goal.

Guest, Male #2
The Jordanian people came to demand an end to the Wadi Araba treaty. They came to demand an end to the relations between the Jordanian government and the Zionist entity. The masses are leading this demand and we confirm our right to resist the occupation and our right to remove the enemy from our land. We have the right to reject its embassy and reject all diplomatic, economic and cultural ties with it.

Reporter, Male # 1
The demonstrations illustrated the features of this season and highlighted its headlines and eventual implications. The protests in the al-Rabia area in the capital Amman resulted from genuine pain. The protestors chanted for the cancelation of the peace treaty with the Israeli entity, known as the Wadi Araba, and called for an end to ties with the entity. They also demanded its ambassador be expelled and an end to the normalization policy. Angry demonstrators chanted for the death of Israel and the US. In addition, they burned the Israeli flag. Some protestors tried to break the security cordon surrounding the Israeli embassy and breached the checkpoints but the heavily deployed security forces prevented the protestors, igniting sporadic clashes. The number of demonstrators grew after evening prayers when worshippers left the Kalouti Mosque located near Tel Aviv's embassy.

Joining me now in the studio is the prime minister's spokesman Mark Regev. Do we need to renegotiate the peace treaty with Egypt or can we just give them temporary approval to send in extra troops?

Guest, Male # 2 (Mark Regev)
The peace treaty has been a foundation for regional security of the security and peace in the Middle East for more than 30 years. I think it serves Israel, it serves the interests of Egypt and we want to keep that treaty strong. It is clear there is a new problem today of terrorism and we have to work effectively with the Egyptians in cooperation to make sure this terrorism is under control, that we deal with terrorist firmly and don't allow them to turn this border area into a zone of terrorism. Egypt and Israel have a common interest in succeeding in this effort.
