<media:text>Egypt insists that its recent deployment of troops in Sinai was fully coordinated with Israel and did not violate the peace treaty between the two countries. This is according to the al-Masry al-Youm newspaper, which quoted a member of Egypt's higher ruling military council as saying that Egyptian forces entered Sinai only following consultations with Israel, adding that Egypt is committed to the Camp David Accords. This came a day after Maariv reported that Israel sent a message to Egypt that it must remove its tanks from the Sinai because their presence violates the peace treaty.</media:text>

A senior Israeli source at the prime minister's office told our Al Jazeera correspondent that Tel Aviv sent a letter to Cairo, via the White House, calling for the immediate withdrawal of the Egyptian army's tanks from Sinai.

Presenter, Male #1
Egypt has stepped up its military presence in the region as part of Operation Eagle, aimed at purging "armed terrorists" following the recent Rafah attack.

Reporter, Female #2
Is it a warning sign of a looming crisis between Israel and post-revolution Egypt under the Brotherhood's reign? And will Cairo respond to Tel Aviv's request, sent via Washington, to withdraw the Egyptian army's tanks from Sinai? Israel considers the deployment of heavy arms for the first time in the region since the Camp David Accords were signed, even if part of a wide-scale cleansing operation against terrorists, as a serious violation of the peace treaty between the two sides, especially considering that Egypt acted with no prior consultation with Israel.

Reporter, Female #2
The message comes one day after Israel deployed anti-missile system batteries in the city of Eilat in response to the Egyptian army's deployment of anti-aircraft missiles in Sinai. The Israeli diplomatic escalation also comes after the recent visit by the new commander of the Egyptian armed forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, to the volatile Sinai Peninsula. Al-Sisi is directly overseeing the final preparatory plans to step up Operation Eagle that is underway in the area. President Mohamed Morsi said that al-Sisi is personally leading the operation in Sinai. The plan includes the use of military aircrafts and rocket launchers with the aim of purging the area from armed militants.

Reporter, Female #2
It's undeniable that the killing of the 16 Egyptian soldiers by members of what has become known as the Salafi-Jihadist Front in Sinai has placed Egypt in an awkward position. The Egyptian government is obligated to maintain security, which is subject to an escalation at any time. In doing so, Egypt is trying to prevent militants from provoking Israel in a bid to drag it into carrying out a military action in Sinai, and consequently engage in a military confrontation with Egypt. And this exactly what Cairo and Tel Aviv are trying to avoid, at least for now.

Presenter, Male #1
Joining us from Jerusalem is our correspondent Elias Karram. Elias, why did Israel take this position, and why now?

Guest, Male #2 (Elias Karram, Al Jazeera Correspondent in Jerusalem)
Honestly, Israel is facing a real dilemma. On one hand, Israel wants the Egyptian army to continue its military operation in the Sinai Peninsula and purge the area of what Israel is referring to as "terror cells." But on the other hand, Israel fears that the Egyptian army will not withdraw its forces from Sinai after completing its operation.

Guest, Male #2
Israel fears that the Egyptian army will create a new state of affairs that contradict what was agreed upon in the military provisions of the Camp David Peace Accords between the two sides. Israel will have no choice but to deal with this new reality on the ground. This may lead to the launch of a new round of negotiations, especially considering that Egypt may demand to renegotiate the military provisions of the Camp David Accords.

Guest, Male #2
Israel asked the US administration, or the White House, to mount pressure on the Egyptian army and the political decision-making body in Cairo to ensure the withdrawal of the Egyptian forces after the completion of their military operation. They also want to ensure that Egypt will not deploy any forces or military machinery without consulting Israel first. In the past few weeks, Israel has allowed the Egyptian army to deploy a limited number of tanks and fighter jets. However, it seems that the Egyptian army sent more reinforcements than were permitted by Israel. And this is where Israeli fears and concerns originate.</media:text>

A series of decisions was followed by a speech, where he voiced the reasoning behind these decisions. It is Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi who surprised the Egyptians with decisive and unexpected decisions. Morsi seized legislative powers, and implemented drastic changes to the military leadership, most notably sending Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, and his deputy, Army Chief-of-Staff Sami Anan, to retirement.

Presenter, Female #1
Revolutionary and Islamist forces welcomed these decisions as thousands took to the street to support the president. However, others considered the decisions to be surprising, and that they were adopted without compromising with the military institution. Our correspondent Tawfiq Ahmed reports from Cairo.

Reporter, Male #1
Wide-scale political and popular reactions were in support of Morsi's decisions. Thousands of citizens went to Tahrir Square and other revolutionary squares to announce their joy over the dismissal of Tantawi and Anan. They called on the president to topple figures of the old regime.

Guest, Male #2
We have been waiting for these great decisions for a long time. They came just in time. And thank God, this is a fatal blow to corruption.

Guest, Male #3
He has had a big responsibility lately. So he decided to dismiss them, but appoint them as presidential advisers. I think this is a good decision because he respected the history of the people and took a revolutionary step.

Guest, Male #4
This is one of the revolution's days. The revolution is really close to being completed.

Reporter, Male #1
President Morsi, who issued these decisions at a very sensitive time, utilized Laylat al-Qadr, or the Night of the Power, celebrations to confirm that the decision to dismiss Tantawi and Anan was not personal. Rather, it was aimed at serving Egypt's interests, and bringing in new blood into the Egyptian leadership.

Guest, Male #5
Loyalty is a must towards those who were loyal. I never intend to direct to anyone, or to any individual, a negative message. I only intended, and God only knows what I intend, I only intended to serve the interests of this nation, and this people.

Reporter, Male #1
There were conflicting reports over the Military Council's knowledge of these decisions before they were issued. Some sources said that they came following consultations with Tantawi, while others denied that the military knew about these dismissals, saying that on the contrary, they were surprising.

Reporter, Male #1
Morsi issued a new constitutional declaration and drastic decisions, with which he seized all presidential powers and ended, in theory, the Military Council's political role. So will the council's role fade away, or will the turbulent conditions the country is experiencing prevent that from happening? Tawfiq Ahmed, Dubai TV, Cairo.

Presenter, Female #1
One of the most prominent figures that Morsi's decisions brought to power is Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, who was appointed defense minister as replacement for Field Marshal Tantawi. Al-Sissi is the youngest member of the Egyptian Military Council. He was born in 1954, and assumed a number of military posts, the latest of which was chief of the military intelligence before being appointed defense minister.

Presenter, Female #1
In addition, Judge Mahmoud Mekki joined the presidential circle by becoming vice president. In 2005, he was a leader of the judicial independence movement; he was also deputy of the court of appeals. He left the judiciary and worked as a lawyer after he was accused of harming his fellow judges, but he was then acquitted.

Presenter, Female #1
Morsi, who is facing an open front in Sinai, vowed to crush the militants, and to chase them until they are eliminated from the area. So for the sixth consecutive day, the Egyptian army's military operations are continuing against the militants there.

Presenter, Female #1
Today, a security source said that extremist militants shot tribal elder Khallaf al-Maniey and his son as they were heading back from a conference organized by tribal leaders to condemn the operations against the Egyptian army's sites. No one claimed responsibility for the assassination.

Presenter, Female #1
And while the military campaign is escalating in Sinai, Reuters news agency reported that a source close to the militants said that quote, "Hundreds of them organized a secret meeting last night to look into how they will respond to the developments in Sinai."</media:text>

An Egyptian military source said that armed forces are continuing to cleanse Sinai from gunmen for a third consecutive day in an operation known as Eagle 2. The source added that the operation has led to the killing of 42 gunmen as of this morning, and the arrest of another 15 who are currently being interrogated. Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi discussed with Defense Minister Marshall Hussein Tantawi the deployment of armed forces to Sinai to establish security. In addition, Egyptian armed forces have reinforced their military presence in northern Sinai.

Reporter, Male #2
A fleet of tanks and armored vehicles is heading toward northern Sinai to participate in the military operation against gunmen, extremists, and outlaws. This comes after the Egyptian military lost 16 of its soldiers near the border with the Gaza Strip and Israel. Until the attack on the border patrol guards, Sinai had not witnessed a deployment of this magnitude since the Camp David Accords were signed.

Guest, Male #3 (Ahmed Aarag, Security Expert)
The resources of the police are limited, but the army must have a strong presence today, and the Camp David agreement must be amended, because it is restricting the deployment of police and security forces in Sinai. The terrorist cells must be completely eliminated.

Reporter, Male #2
Military reinforcements were also sent to assist security forces responding to sporadic attacks by unknown gunmen on security posts and installations, where the police are no longer able to confront these assailants who are armed with modern gear.

Guest, Male #4
They must have with them a very strong army; they must have forces from the intelligence services to know what is going on.

Guest, Male #5
We do not need a security solution for all of Egypt's problems. Unemployment, of course, is a problem our youth are enduring. Ignorance is one reason; it caused some of the problems we're facing.

Reporter, Male #2
In a related development, bulldozers were sent to the area of the tunnels that lead to the Gaza Strip to close them. Some residents willingly closed the tunnel openings on the Egyptian side of the Rafah Crossing, while others did so unwillingly following the Egyptian army's movements near the border. The campaign of the Egyptian armed forces against gunmen in northern Sinai witnessed a qualitative development after receiving new heavy weapons for the first time. But the fear is that these gunmen may have more powerful counter-weapons. Abdel al-Basih Hassan, Al Jazeera, from the city of Sheikh Zuweid in northern Sinai.</media:text>

The Egyptian army only waited a few hours before launching an extensive military campaign in the Sinai that included the use of fighter planes. The campaign comes in response to the attack in Sinai that left 16 border guards dead. In addition, the el-Arish border area witnessed gunfire at its security checkpoints, leading the residents to take to the streets to demand protection and to request that they be armed so they can defend themselves. Tawfiq Ahmad reports from Cairo.

Reporter, Male #1
The Egyptian military did not wait long after the killing of 16 of its soldiers in the bloody Rafah attack before launching a military offensive with fighter jets and tanks with the aim of cleansing Sinai of what it described as terrorists. Security sources said the operation lasted a few hours, and resulted in the killing of at least 20 gunmen.

Guest, Male #2
This operation will probably last longer than a week, according to leaks to the media. But it seems there is a certain and honest Egyptian will to strongly respond to the terrorist scene that exists in the Sinai area, and reduce the sources of terrorism.

And after military and police centers in the city of el-Arish came under a violent attack at dawn on Wednesday, all security agencies were mobilized in anticipation of the unknown gunmen's attempt to storm police stations. The pursuit of the gunmen by security officers is still in full swing.

These incidents came only hours after funerals were held for the victims of the bloody Rafah attacks and a solemn civilian and military procession that touched the hearts of Egyptians, most of whom trust the military's capability to respond to the attack.

Of course I have faith in the Egyptian army. Had it not been this way, then it would not have been able to protect the country and its borders during the revolution.

I hope it will regain control of the entire region soon.

These events placed the Kandil government and President Morsi, who have only been in power for a few weeks, under intense pressure that could threaten their popularity and ability to govern. But others believe the new leaders have yet to prove themselves.

With a large-scale security operation in Sinai, and extensive meetings by the government and political forces, the hope is to find a solution to the security vacuum in that area. The presidency is facing difficult conditions, as the gap between the average Egyptian citizen and the decision-makers is gradually widening. Tawfiq Ahmad, Dubai TV, Cairo.</media:text>

The first government under the reign of President Mohamed Morsi was revealed today. This comes hours after Prime Minister-designate Hisham Qandil announced the makeup of his cabinet, which includes the former finance and foreign ministers. Meanwhile, Egyptian military sources confirmed that the head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi, would retain his position as defense minister. Egyptians are hoping that the new government will keenly deal with many of the post-revolution issues. Tawfiq Ahmed reports from Cairo.

Following marathon consultations and contacts, the newly-appointed prime minster, Dr. Hisham Qandil, announced the makeup of his government. Several former ministers retained their positions, including Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amr and a defense minister whose name had stirred a wide controversy, but analysts confirmed it was Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, the head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

Guest, Male #2 (Dr. Mohamed Salman, Professor of Political Science at Cairo University)
Generally speaking, this cabinet is keen to execute specific plans and achieve specific goals during a short period of time. It knows well that everyone will be watching.

Reporter, Male #1
It's a technocratic government that did not take political affiliations into account, as previously pledged by Qandil. However, this didn't spare it from criticism.

Guest, Male #3 (Ahmed Baha'a al-Din Sha'aban, Arab Socialist Party Secretary-General)
This government, in which the vast majority of its members are technocrats, has its own problems. There's a difference between a technocratic minister and a political minister. We are in a phase where we need political ministers who can understand the people's needs and resolve their problems.

Reporter, Male #1
Amid the disagreement over the fundamental issues, all political and revolutionary factions expressed their willingness to give the new government an opportunity and enough time to prove itself.

Guest, Male #4 (Ahmed Abu Baraka, Justice and Freedom Party Legal Advisor)
We issued a preemptive announcement urging everyone to give the new government an opportunity. The government is keen to announce its political program and state policies. Once this phase is complete, we can evaluate its performance. We can't prejudge this government and prevent it from exercising its authority, as it's an act of thuggery with the aim of undermining the government and weakening the president's position, as well as jeopardizing the entire democratic process. What's happening in Egypt doesn't happen in any country or society in the world.

Reporter, Male #1
President Morsi is slated to preside over the first session of the council of ministers today, following the swearing-in ceremony. He will tackle issues related to the status quo. Amid the political and economic unrest sweeping the country, many difficult tasks are awaiting the Qandil-led government, especially considering the thorny issues and high ceiling of expectations facing the first government under the reign of President Morsi.</media:text>

The troops fired water cannon at protesters and hurled stones at them to keep them from advancing. The protesters took shelter behind metal sheets snatched from a nearby construction site and hurled back stones. Others climbed the roof of a nearby university and showered soldiers with rocks from above. The troops then opened up with heavy volleys of tear gas that pushed the demonstrators back. The Health Ministry reported eight protesters were injured. The security forces also appeared to sustain casualties. </media:text>

Three others were injured and evacuated to a hospital in Beersheba. The IDF spokesman reported that soldiers opened fire on the infiltrators after they refused orders to stop. Egyptian forces on the other side of the border also opened fire, and the suspects responded by shooting at both the Egyptian and the Israeli forces. The IDF has been placed on high alert along the border amid intelligence reports that Gaza-based terror groups are plotting to launch another attack in the area, similar to one last August that killed eight Israelis. The head of the Egyptian Military Council, Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, has announced an end to the state of emergency in the country, starting Wednesday. However, Tantawi made an exception to what he described as "acts of thuggary." This news comes in a televised speech addressed to the Egyptian people, marking the first anniversary of the January 25 revolution.

Guest, Male #2 (Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, Head of Egyptian Military Council)
I have decided to end the state of emergency across all regions of the republic, except in dealing with criminal acts of thuggary. The decision will take effect on the morning of January 25, 2012. Oh great Egyptian people, Egypt is the land of civilizations and history, and our people were able to reclaim this history by launching a national revolution and upholding the nation's security and unity despite all the challenges and difficulties facing us; and the people were up to the responsibility.

Presenter, Male #1
In any victorious revolution there's always what is referred to as a "counter-revolution," which is usually planned and carried out by opportunists and loyalists of the former regime. While this counter-revolution may succeed in certain cases, it may wait for the situation to be restored before trying to achieve its objectives. The following report by Atteya Nabil sheds light on the features of what could be referred to as the "counter-revolution" in Egypt, and examines its current stage, nearly a year after the launch of the January 25 revolution.

Reporter, Male #3
They are calling themselves "the children of Mubarak." They are rejecting the prosecution of the former president, as they consider him a national leader who looked after the nation for thirty years. They believe he deserves to be honored, not humiliated and held accountable.

Guest, Female #1
Mubarak lived thirty years as president. Before that, he served the country for another thirty years. He served in wars and battles. I'm sure that he knows history and how it works. He also knows that for every revolution or action there's a reaction.

Reporter, Male #3
They don't recognize the popular revolution that toppled Mubarak's regime. They believe that the previous status quo didn't require the launch of a revolution against a president who helped achieve economic prosperity for his citizens, as cited by international organizations.

Guest, Male #4 (Sameh Abu Arayes, Financial Analyst at the Stock Exchange)
Over the past 30 years, there has been a trend of continuing development in Egypt, unseen since the era of Mohamed Ali, so to speak.

Guest, Male #5 (Ashraf Faruk, Accountant and Member of "Sorry Mr. President" Group)
The former members of the National Party have always compared the president to his son. His son was a shrewd businessman. He was educated. He was the new blood needed to create change. He lobbied for a young leadership.

Reporter, Male #3
After the success of the Egyptian revolution and the beginning of its siege on the former regime, several former leaders launched a counterattack based on the saying "attack is the best form of defense." Followers of the counter-revolution believe that Tahrir Square should not be the epicenter of events unfolding in the new Egypt. This is why they decided to choose their own private square.

Guest, Male #6
We came out here to defend Egypt. We will not allow any American traitor or anyone receiving money to be here.

Guest, Male #7
I just want to say one thing to the people in Tahrir: "What do you want?"

Guest, Male #8
The youths in Tahrir Square were the ones who launched the revolution. The youths in al-Abasiyah are the ones who were in Tahrir before.

Guest, Female #2
It's a big mistake to say that the army must leave. The army doesn't leave.

Reporter, Male #3
Some see al-Abasiyah Square as the stronghold of the counter-revolution, and people at the square say they always prefer to swim against the current. They also believe that they have the right to express their opinions that may conflict with the opinion of the Egyptian public, which seeks to create real and tangible change across all walks of life.

Dozens of Egyptians have been injured during early morning hours when army and police forces stormed Tahrir Square in central Cairo. An Egyptian military source announced the arrest of 164 people. Al-Alam obtained footage showing a number of protestors have been injured during last night's confrontations.

Reporter, Male #1
The quiet dawn here at Cairo's Tahrir Square was interrupted by heavy gunfire, as military forces stormed the square, following nighttime bloody clashes. The strikers said that the army advanced on the square from three directions and surrounded it, with the participation of forces advancing from the forth direction. The army ordered the strikers to disperse then arrested some of them. In addition, they removed some of the sit-in tents and burnt others. They also vandalized cars on the streets leading to the square. Several troops and police officers stood guard at security checkpoints near the square, amid seesaw battles with protestors, who hurled stones at police. The activists, who were unable to counter the large number of military forces, which were armed by batons and guns, were forced to flee the square to nearby streets. Evidence of the confrontation was visible at the square, with blood staining both sides of the street leading to al-Qasr al-Aeni Street, which is home to the prime minister's office where the sit-in started. This is a bloody image of an Egyptian protestor. Al-Alam obtained images of victims who sustained gunfire wounds.

Guest, Male #2
The military council and its field marshal must leave. Hosni Mubarak shouldn't rule, because as of now he is still ruling. Hosni Mubarak is currently running the country. The field marshal and the military council must leave and stand trial.

Reporter, Male #1
The strikers began their protests at Tahrir Square against the military rule on November 18. This came after the former government, which was backed by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces proposed new amendments to be entered to a constitutional document granting protection to the army from civil monitoring.

Presenter, Female #1
Deputy Egyptian Defense Minister Major General Adel Emara launched an attack on the demonstrators, justifying the army's action as self defense and defense of public property.

Guest, Male #3 (Major General Adel Emara, Deputy Egyptian Defense Minister)
How could we claim that the demonstrations are peaceful? They prevented the prime minister from entering the building. The incident started when demonstrators attacked an officer while on his way to work. An altercation ensued between the soldiers and the demonstrators who were holding the officer. No one can withstand what these soldiers have endured of systematic insults since the cabinet sit-in began.

In Egypt, clashes were renewed once again before dusk. The Egyptian Interior Ministry says those who it referred to as "troublemakers" insist on creating chaos and storming the ministry's headquarters and police stations in a number of provinces. The general prosecutor's office announced that an investigation will be held of a number of officials in the Interior Ministry. For its part, the ministry denied using fire weapons in confronting the protestors.

It's a new day and tension still dominates Mohammed Mahmoud Street that connects Tahrir Square and the Egyptian Interior Ministry headquarters. Ambulances rushed to the area to transport the wounded in the confrontations between the protestors and police forces. The Interior Ministry says its forces did not use any fire weapons on those it called "troublemakers," indicating these people strongly insist on reaching the ministry's building.

You're speaking to us right now; you should see Mohammed Mahmoud Street.

We reject the statement and we strongly denounce it.

In the center of the square, the sit-in is still ongoing, although the number of participants has decreased since yesterday. However, the political discussions are at their height. The statement by the chief of the Supreme Council for the Armed Forces did not satisfy the protestors in Tahrir Square.

It's the same moves that Mubarak made. The regime, which did not fall, is dealing with the people in the same way. These are the steps and actions we saw during the first revolution.

What's the difference between us and Tunisia? Tunisia overthrew the entire regime. But Egypt has still not completely removed the regime. All we did was damn the regime.

Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi accepted the resignation of the Essam Sharaf's government, and said parliamentary elections will be held on schedule and presidential elections will be completed before the end of June next year. Representatives of a number of political parties and many presidential candidates agreed with Lieutenant General Sami Anan, the chief of staff of the Egyptian armed forces, on ending the violence against the protestors, securing the right to peaceful protest, and forming a national salvation government.

They entered the square and were kicked out. The square chanted against them. The square brought down this alliance between them and the military council. If they were truly part of the people and part of the square, then they could have conveyed the people's feelings to the military council. Instead, they went there to split the profits and positions between themselves.

Guest, Male #8
There are no parties in the square at the moment, so how do they represent us? I don't believe they represent us at all; they are ready to negotiate on everything. I think that's the opinion of the people in the square.

In between the protestors in Tahrir and the reaction of the ruling authorities, a kind of long-distance dialogue is being formed between the two fronts. It may be difficult to predict its results and the future of Egypt's democratic transition. What gathers these protestors is their doubt in the military council's intentions and a lack of trust in the elites who are dominating the political scene in the country. </media:text>

They were the most important, most dangerous, and most glorious 11 days in our history. The late leader Anwar Sadat described the epic October War as "a story of struggle and hardship; of the bitterness and pain of defeat, and the sweetness and hope of victory." Thirty-eight years later, commander-in-chief of the Egyptian Armed Forces Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi gave a speech to salute the armed forces of the October war and to honor the innocent martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country after al-Sadat made the decision to initiate change and go to war. And because this is the first anniversary of the October victory after the January Revolution, Marshal Tantawi confirmed that the youth of this country are the most fundamental pillar of the nation, today and in the future. He said our great people are capable of transitioning through this fragile and decisive phase in our national history. He warned that anyone who tries to undermine the security of the country will be confronted by the Egyptian people's anger.

Guest, Male #2
We should face these crises and dangers so that our path and national goals will not be hindered. Our national goal is to make Egypt a strong nation that is loyal to its people. A united and committed people under the national flag for the sake of the country's progress and prosperity.

Presenter, Male #1
Now we broadcast Marshal Tantawi's address to the nation marking the glorious October victory.

From Cairo. My fellow citizens, Communiqué No. 7 which is issued by the General Command of the Armed Forces on October 6, 1973. In the name of God the most merciful and most compassionate. Our armed forces succeeded in crossing the Suez Canal along the confrontation line and occupied the eastern bank of the canal.
Our forces are currently successfully continuing their fight with the enemy. Our naval forces also carried out defensive operations alongside our ground forces near the Mediterranean coast. They struck the enemy's important targets on the northern coast of the Sinai and directly hit the targets. From Cairo.
