<media:text>An independent inquiry into the death of Iraqi citizen Baha Mousa in British army custody found evidence of "an appalling episode of serious gratuitous violence."

-----

The mother and son of Baha Mousa, an Iraqi hotel receptionist who was kicked and beaten to death whilst in British Army custody, hold pictures of him at their house in Basra. British soldiers beat to death an Iraqi civilian in an act of "unjustified and brutal violence" that left a "very great stain" on Britain's armed forces, an inquiry concluded on Thursday. Former judge William Gage, who led the three-year investigation, said senior officers should have done more to prevent the 2003 death of hotel worker Baha Mousa and sustained attacks by British troops on nine other detainees in Iraq. Mousa was a 26-year-old in Basra in September 2003.

<media:text>Britain has released a long-awaited report into the death of an Iraqi civilian and abuse of Iraqi prisoners by British soldiers. The report has slammed the British troops' conduct and the Ministry of Defense for mistreating an Iraqi civilian that led to his death. The inquiry chairman, Sir William Gage says the probe has found that Baha Mousa's death was caused by a combination of injuries during his time in custody. Gage also found Mousa and other detainees were subjected to "a brutal catalog of unjustified violence." Baha Mousa, who worked at a hotel in the Iraqi city of Basra, was arrested during a raid by British troops in 2003.
