Government Air Strikes Kill More Civilians Across Syria

There have been fresh reports of more civilian casualties in Syria - opposition activists claim government air strikes killed 16 people on Sunday in the north east of the country. These unverified images are said to show Saturday's air attack in Idlib province in which a UK based Syrian Human rights agency claimed at least 18 civilians died. While both sides have been accused of war crimes the agency has accused Syrian forces of deliberately targeting civilians. Government and rebel forces are blaming each other for the destruction of a seventh century mosque. Amateur video shows the Omari mosque in Deraa being destroyed after a sustained attack. The building carries special symbolism for the Syrian opposition - in the early says of the uprising it had served as a meeting point and makeshift clinic.

6,000 Dead: March Is Deadliest Month Yet in Syria Conflict

March was the bloodiest month yet in Syria's conflict, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. It estimates that over 6,000 people were killed, a third of them civilians, including 300 children. Almost nowhere is sacred. Damascus University was hit by rebel mortar bombs on Thursday, leaving 15 students dead. And 120,000 is the group's unofficial estimate for the total number killed throughout Syria's conflict since it first began almost two years ago. The city centre has seen some of the fiercest fighting. It's a stronghold of President Bashar al-Assad's forces and viewed as a prize by insurgents. They've encircled the centre and have intensified attacks this week as they push to end four decades of Assad family rule. President Assad labels them terrorists and claims they're funded by Gulf and other foreign powers.&nbsp;

As protests grow in the West Bank over the death of a Palestinian inside an Israeli prison, we speak to a pair of Israeli and Palestinian fathers who've responded to personal tragedies with activism for peace. Bassam Aramin and Rami Elhanan united after the killings of their daughters -- Aramin's at the hands of an Israeli officer and Elhanan's in a Palestinian suicide bombing. Once dedicated fighters for their respective causes, they have since renounced violence and become leading voices for peace. Their stories are told in the new documentary film, "Within the Eye of the Storm." With talk of a third intifada potentially breaking out in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Aramin and Elhanan join us to discuss their shared journey and why they believe both Israelis and Palestinians should join a nonviolent uprising against the Israeli occupation. <br />

Government Air Attacks Strike Syrian Cities

<strong>WARNING: Graphic Content. </strong>A distraught man carrying a wounded child through rubble and shouting "innocent children, innocent children" is the opening image on one of several amateur videos posted on a social website. They have been unverified and show Syrian government air strikes reportedly targeting the province of Hama. The number of dead and wounded is not clear. Syrian warplanes and troops mounted a countrywide offensive on Thursday, activists and state media said. Further images captured alleged attacks in Damascus. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said more than one hundred people including women and children were killed in one of Thursday's attacks on a district on the edge of Homs. Aleppo was also a target. Pictures of devastation caused when a rocket slammed into a building in the city were provided by the government-controlled Syrian television. It said there were several casualties and that the explosion was caused by a rocket fired by a "terrorist group" a term the government uses frequently to describe rebels involved in the 22-month-old uprising. <br />

<media:text>WARNING: Graphic Content. A distraught man carrying a wounded child through rubble and shouting "innocent children, innocent children" is the opening image on one of several amateur videos posted on a social website. They have been unverified and show Syrian government air strikes reportedly targeting the province of Hama. The number of dead and wounded is not clear. Syrian warplanes and troops mounted a countrywide offensive on Thursday, activists and state media said. Further images captured alleged attacks in Damascus.

France is in its fifth day of an offensive to oust rebels that have held much of Mali's northern region since March -- an area larger than Afghanistan. The strikes have reportedly killed 11 civilians, including three children fleeing the bombardment of a camp near the central town of Konna. The United Nations estimates as many as 30,000 may have been displaced since fighting began last week. The United States has backed the offensive by helping transport French troops and making plans to send drones or other surveillance aircraft. It is aiding a fight against Malian forces that it once helped train, only to see them defect and join the Islamist rebellion. We discuss the latest in Mali with Al Jazeera correspondent May Ying Welsh, who has reported from Mali's north; and with freelance journalist Hannah Armstrong, a fellow of the Institute of Current World Affairs who joins us from the Malian capital of Bamako. Witnesses claim at least 30 were killed when the shells fired by warplanes struck at lunchtime. Reports suggest the attack happened after a consignment of fuel had just arrived and crowds packed the forecourt. In a separate shelling the road linking Damascus to the airport came under attack. Government forces control the center of the capital and have been pounding the suburbs from the air. Rebel forces see the threat from the air as President Asaad's main weapon. In a strategic attack the Syrian Observatory for Human rights said rebels struck a military air base near the main Aleppo-Damascus highway. The al Qaeda-linked al-Nusra front fired machine guns and mortars at helicopters grounded at the Taftanaz military airport. State media have not commented on the fighting. </media:text>

Clashes between rebels and armed Palestinians loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have continued in a Damascus neighbourhood inhabited mainly by Palestinian refugees. Residents in Yarmouk camp said several mortar rounds landed in the neighborhood on Tuesday and gunfire echoed around the area. Locals said there were no Syrian government troops in the camp and that most of the fighting was between opposition fighters and gunmen from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine - General Command (PFLP-GC). The Palestinian refugee forces have been loyal to the regime until now, but that loyalty is being tested after a government air strike killed some Palestinian civilians. <media:text>Presenter, Female #1
Two Palestinians were martyred in the Breij refugee camp in the center of the Gaza Strip after it was targeted by an Israeli warplane, raising the number of martyrs to 102, and the injured to over 850 since the beginning of the Israeli military campaign. Ramez Harb, a prominent field commander in al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad Movement, was martyred in the Israeli air raid that targeted Burj al-Shurouk in the city of Gaza tonight. Seven others were also injured. This is the second raid on Burj al-Shurouk that houses the offices of a number of media organizations. The raid led to a fire in the building while a number of journalists were trapped inside.

Presenter, Female #1
As Israeli military operations against the Gaza Strip continue, the number of martyrs and injured is also increasing. However, in the past few days, a large number of these victims have been children.

Reporter, Female #2
Jamal, Sara, Yusuf and Ibrahim. Tears and broken hearts bid farewell to the little children. They were martyred along with all members of their family in an Israeli raid that targeted their house in Gaza. The result was anger, sadness, and condemnation.

Guest, Female #3
What is the sin of these little children? They are children, shame on them. What are the leaders of other countries doing? Shouldn't they be standing with us? Our little children can't sleep; our little children are terrified of death! Shame on them!

Reporter, Female #2
The images of these children shook the millions who have been following the situation in Gaza.

Guest, Male #1
My beloved father, my beloved father.

Reporter, Female #2
In the last few days, the majority of the victims of the military operations against the Gaza Strip have been women and children.

Guest, Male #2 (Dr. Hasan Khalaf, Undersecretary of the Department of Health in the Removed Government)
In this barbaric aggression, Israel has so far killed 24 children, and 10 women, and 12 elderly people. It also injured 400 women and children. This a direct targeting and direct killing of children who were not carrying or firing rockets. They were in their houses.

Reporter, Female #2
Whether Israel is targeting civilians, particularly children, as part of its escalation, or as means to pressure Hamas to accept a truce without preconditions, remains the most important issue for Palestinian and international human rights organizations. They view the killings as punishable crimes to which great interest is given, and in order to prevent Israel from targeting civilians again, documentation and legal follow-up are necessary.

Guest, Male #3 (Hamdi Shakoura, Palestinian Center for Human Rights)
The state of Israel and the occupation forces wouldn't have dared to go this far, and take action against children and civilians during this aggression, had the state of Israel been investigated and prosecuted for the crimes it previously committed against children and civilians during its last aggression on Gaza. Theses crimes went unpunished, which is what emboldened Israel to carry out more crimes against children and civilians.

Palestinians are outraged at Israel's repeated targeting of children. They believe it is ignoring international law as the world condones its actions, while crimes are being committed against the children of Gaza. <media:text>A second day of air strikes on Syrian towns near the Turkish border is continuing to cause chaos. Some refugees can be seen squeezing under barbed wire fences to enter Turkey. Medical workers and refugees in Ceylanpinar say bombs have fallen on residential areas of Ras al-Ain, an Arab and Kurdish town that fell to rebels last week during an advance into Syria's northeast. Opposition activists say at least a dozen people were killed on Monday, the latest of an estimated 38,000 victims of the 19 month civil war. Turkey is reluctant to be drawn into a regional conflict but the proximity of the air raids to the border is testing its pledge to defend itself from any violation of its territory or any spillover of violence from Syria. </media:text>

Two people of Asian decent were killed and a third was wounded in terrorist acts that targeted civilians in the Bahraini capital al-Manama. This comes days after the government announced a ban on all forms of public gatherings, and opposition mobilizations for the sake of public safety.

Reporter, Female #1
Days after the Bahraini government announced a ban on all forms of public gatherings, and opposition mobilizations for the sake of public safety a rare attack occurred, mainly targeting civilians. Five bombs exploded killing two people and injuring another. The Bahraini Interior Ministry announced that the two people that were killed are Asian street cleaners. One of them was instantly killed after kicking an explosive package, setting it off. The other person died at the hospital he was taken to after another bomb exploded near a theater. The ministry added that the bombs were locally produced, and that the bombing occurred in the Qudaibiya and Adliya districts of Manama, describing these bombing as terrorist acts.

Guest, Female #2
He is a foreign worker who works in Adliya. He was a street cleaner with the municipality. He wakes up everyday at 4 am, and everyday he passes by the same place. He noticed a suspicious package with a timer. He lifted the package and it exploded.

The Bahraini authorities had earlier announced that a number of people were injured by home-made bombs. However, the form of today's attacks are considered unprecedented. Bahrain is witnessing sporadic protests led by Shiite government opponents. Shiite villages continuously witness confrontations between protesters and security forces.</media:text>

They died in American missile attacks against Taliban militants in the eastern province of Logar. Rebel fighters attempt to shoot the aircraft down, but after circling several times, it unleashes a burst of machine gun fire. Then an all-too familiar scene of the month-old conflict: children being hurried to a nearby hospital. The UN says the Assad regime has been deliberately targeting youngsters. Then an all-too familiar scene of the month-old conflict: children being hurried to a nearby hospital. The UN says the Assad regime has been deliberately targeting youngsters. One Aleppo surgeon says such shocking images have done nothing to spark the international community into action. "We have been living like for nearly two years. Nothing is being done," he said. Some of the young are left to scavenge the rubble, looking for anything that can sell on in return for food. Hussein, 15, says: "We have to survive, but I couldn't find any work. So I look in the rubbish for nylon, brass or metal to make some money to eat." Ahmad, 14, explains that he has younger siblings "and they need food too." The boys take the scrap metal and then melt it to down for cash to buy bread. They don't go to school anymore as most of Aleppo's schools are closed. Many of the city's residents are simply too impoverished to leave. They still hold out hope that the shelling will stop and they can return to the lives they once knew before the conflict began. </media:text>
