        <link>http://news.linktv.org/videos/brooklyn-college-funding-threatened-for-hosting-israel-boycott-discussion?start=0</link>
<description>New York politicians are threatening to cut funding to Brooklyn College if the school hosts a forum Thursday night about the Palestinian-led campaign to boycott and divest from Israel. The Brooklyn College Political Science Department is among the event's co-sponsors. In response, a group of New York City Council members has raised the possibility of Brooklyn College losing taxpayer support. The council members' threat is just one of several efforts by local lawmakers, from Congress on down, to pressure Brooklyn College to remove its sponsorship or even cancel the event. As the school vows to proceed with the event, we're joined by one of its featured speakers, author and activist Omar Barghouti, a founding member of the BDS movement and author of &quot;Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions: The Global Struggle for Palestinian Rights.&quot; On BDS, Barghouti says, &quot; It follows in the steps of the civil rights movement in this country, in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa... It's just when we talk about Palestinian rights, that some people are trying to criminalize and make it completely unacceptable speech to address Palestinian rights under international law.&quot; We're also joined by Glenn Greenwald, columnist for The Guardian and author of &quot; With Liberty and Justice for Some: How the Law Is Used to Destroy Equality and Protect the Powerful.&quot; &lt;br /&gt;</description>

Licensed by the authorities this time around, opposition groups and some Kuwaiti youth forces organized a mass gathering Sunday night in Irada Square in front of parliament, where they renewed their calls to boycott the election on December 1st. This gathering is an escalation, among others, taken by the opposition to protest the new election law. This also comes after the country's emir gave Kuwaitis the choice between taking the path of the law and the constitution, or chaos. Ahmad al-Eneizi reports from Kuwait.

Reporter, Male #1
This rally is described as the largest in comparison to the previous &quot;Dignity of the Homeland&quot; gatherings. Irada Square, in front of the Kuwaiti parliament, hosted a gathering under the supervision of security forces since organizers received an official authorization in contrast to previous unauthorized protests and sit-ins, which witnessed clashes and confrontations between the masses and security personnel. The protest by the opposition, and some political and youth forces, comes as Kuwait is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the constitution. It is also the day on which they are objecting to the new election law, and announcing they will boycott the elections.

Reporter, Male #1
Those participating in this escalation expressed their desire to hold on to the popular gatherings and sit-ins to boycott the ballot boxes on December 1st. They also warned that the crisis is headed toward a dead end, and that it places the country at a crossroads. At the same time, they confirmed that the authorities are capable of diffusing the crisis, but that otherwise the confrontation will continue until the overthrow of the next parliament.

The opposition insists on boycotting and resisting the elections. On the other side, government supporters are confirming that his royal highness assured that he will implement the law in its entirety.

The political situation in Kuwait these days is going through a difficult and sensitive phase. The opposition wasn't satisfied with merely calling for a boycott of the elections, but insisted on implementing all means to change the current situation. In contrast, the authorities say they have been very lenient, but the time has come to firmly apply the law. Ahmed Eneizi, Dubai TV, Kuwait.</media:text>

The Lebanese opposition March 14th Coalition is boycotting the government, and is calling on Prime Minister Nabil Mikati to resign. A statement that was issued on behalf of the opposition at the end of a meeting held yesterday also called for filing a complaint at the UN Security Council and the Arab League against Syria, accusing it of being involved in the case of former minister Michel Samaha. The statement also called for expelling the Syrian ambassador, and demanded that Hezbollah announce its commitment to Lebanon's neutral stance on regional and international issues, and to combat the presence of arms outside of the state's control.</media:text>

<media:text>Benghazi is a city which seems to be taken by pre-election fever, with 358 candidates competing for the 26 seats reserved for it in the General National Congress. Their seats, however, are four less than those for Tripoli, which is enough to deepen old suspicions between Barqa, or eastern Libya, and the west of the country. Most of the people in the east agree that a central government based in Tripoli, hundreds of kilometers away from Benghazi, cannot be trusted. Some have already made their choice, by casting their ballots in a mock vote calling for the boycott of the elections. Others have used alternative means, such as attacking the building of the electoral commission. Al Jazeera's Hoda Abdel Hamid reports from Benghazi.

In the framework of a campaign called &quot;Boycott the Occupation,&quot; Ramallah organized an open solidarity day, with events and activities that stress the campaign's demands to economically and culturally boycott the occupation. It also aims to encourage national industry by proving that our products are a better alternative.

The &quot;Boycott the Occupation&quot; day comes in the framework of a series of events that we're organizing in this campaign. It aims to raise awareness for the academic, cultural, and economic boycotts, to children and youth, and the entire Palestinian society. We stress the demands of the campaign to boycott the occupation in all forms. Today's open event comes as part of the national cause, much like the commemoration of the Nakba, or solidarity with the prisoners.</media:text>

The first day of voting saw numerous reports of minor violations, but was largely hailed as free of fraud and violence. Ahmed Shafik, Mubarak's last prime minister and now a leading candidate, was swarmed by protesters outside his polling station who hurled shoes and debris at him. Democracy Now! correspondent Sharif Abdel Kouddous and videographer Hany Massoud spent the day traveling to polling stations around Cairo speaking to voters about their choices for president and their concerns in the election.

In Iran, polling centers are expected to close in a few hours after Day One of voting. Local media networks reported a large turnout while reformists boycotted these legislative elections. The republic's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said what he referred to as &quot;arrogant countries&quot; are attempting to create an atmosphere of tension and chaos in Iran.

Reporter, Male #2
This is east of the Iranian capital Tehran at eight in the morning. Election monitors and policemen have arrived. However, voting in the parliamentary elections started nearly 40 minutes late. It was said the issue is insignificant. Then, the voting started. The tradition in Iran is for elections to begin with the Supreme Leader casting the first ballot, followed by his messages to foreign powers.

Guest, Male #3 (Ali Khamenei, Iranian Supreme Leader)
There is a lot of negative propaganda against Iranians, and arrogant countries want to create an atmosphere of tension and chaos by intensifying their verbal threats. So, the Iranians' mission has become more sensitive.

Reporter, Male #2
The first hours of the voting saw a notable turnout of constituents. As time passed, queues got longer, even though some reformists announced their boycott of the elections. Voters who came out say they cast their ballots for those they believe are capable of solving their problems.

Guest, Male #4
Participation in the elections is a national duty, and a legitimate assignment. Come say what you want, and vote for the people you want. Why boycott the elections?

Guest, Female #1
I voted for conservatives who are worthy of it, because they are more aware of our economic problems.

Reporter, Male #2
There are no foreign monitors in Iran since their presence is interpreted as undermining Iran's sovereignty. But, near the ballot boxes, observers from the Interior Ministry and the Guardian Council of Constitution stand watch. And nearby, the candidates' observers are also present, monitoring any harassment their supporters may be subject to.

Guest, Male #5 (Mohsen Bihamansh, Head of Iranian Elections' Special Observers Team)
Organizers, observers, and constituents are completing their work as usual. Our basic mission is to record any legal breaches targeting the voters' ballots.

Reporter, Male #2
Iran understands it is conducting elections while its Arab neighbors are going through a difficult time. Here, the Islamic Republic seems to be meticulously prepared, anticipating all emergencies, especially security. The official institutions here, including the media, are trying to offer citizens all incentives to boost the turnout. Those taking part in the elections say it is a message to the foreign powers; however, the majority is voting in favor of those who have been increasingly talking about the economy and the people's living conditions. Syrian opposition sources said security forces killed 17 people in Homs, Hama, Idlib, Daraa and Duma, including four women and three children. The General Commission for the Syrian Revolution added that two villages in Jabal al-Zawiyah of Idlib were subject to violent shelling by heavy and medium weapons while the electricity, water, and communication services there were completely cut off. Meanwhile, the general strike called for by the opposition entered its second day. Opposition sources said stores are continuing to close their doors in a number of regions despite the attempt by the security forces to force the owners to open, as seen in unconfirmed online videos. In addition, the General Commission reported that students in several areas are refusing to go to class.

The process of nominating candidates for local administrative councils in Syria began with 42,000 candidates competing for 17,000 seats. Meanwhile, the opposition is boycotting both the nomination and the vote. The elections came in response the new local administration's decision aimed at what Damascus referred to as &quot;strengthening the administrative decentralization.&quot; Despite Syrian TV's assertion of a large turnout at the polls, other news agencies indicated there was a weak turnout. At one of the polling centers in Damascus, 51 voters cast their votes.

Guest, Male #2 (Sharif Shahadah, Syrian Writer and Analyst)
This confirms that the Syrian government, which spoke of its determination to conduct reforms and began implementing them with political parties then the media, has now come to conduct reforms through elections. I believe that all Syrian provinces are supportive of it, especially since I have called all of our friends in the provinces and they told us that the election is going well.

Meanwhile, dissidents hid the ballot boxes in some areas such as Talkalakh and az-Zarah in Homs. These images, taken in front of a polling center in al-Qurayyah village of Deir az-Zour, do not demonstrate the opposition's stance on the elections.

They are announcing on loudspeakers that anyone who does not go to the polling centers in all these towns and cities to vote will be harassed, their homes will be raided, and they will be arrested. In the town of Ummalat in Daraa, they tried to force several residents to vote, and then the revolutionaries stormed the municipality building, dismissed them, and smashed the ballot boxes.

Parallel to this, activists say clashes erupted between the regime's army and groups of army defectors in Idlib, Daraa, and other regions. Civilians were killed and wounded in both provinces. Opposition activists continued rallying for a civil disobedience campaign, which they began on Sunday with a general strike. A number of students refused to go to class for a second consecutive day. Fifty unidentified bodies were found in several neighborhoods of Homs. Our BBC correspondent quoted a forensic source in Homs saying 38 of the bodies were hit by gunfire and several showed signs of torture. In another development, Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi denied Damascus's involvement in the bombing that targeted French soldiers in southern Lebanon. He said the French foreign minister's statement lacked evidence. On Monday, a Turkish cargo truck was fired on by dozens of people in Syria wearing civilian clothes; they blocked it as it headed to Turkey. This was the second operation in which citizens targeted Turks near the Syrian border. Ankara is taking this incident seriously and cautiously in light of the political tension between the two capitals. Hayyan Aqoub, BBC.

In Morocco, Al Adl wal Ihssane Movement and two political parties, Al-Badil al-Hadari and Umma, decided to boycott the upcoming parliamentary elections, demanding radical reforms dedicated to the people's sovereignty. Meanwhile, the Justice and Development Party and the Party of Renaissance and Virtue announced to run in the elections.

Reporter, Male #1
The Islamic parties are divided over whether or not to participate in the elections. The Justice and Development Party, which has been running in parliamentary elections since 1997, has managed in the past ten years to become the second largest political party in the country. Despite the campaign launched against the party due to its position on electoral laws and its demand to implement certain articles of the constitution, the party is running in the parliamentary elections and insisting it will grapple with corruption and despotism.

Guest, Male #3 (Jami'a al-Muatassim, Member of General Authority for Justice and Development Party)
Our battle aims to confront these corrupt powers in the country. Unfortunately, there are indeed influential parties controlling and sometimes even dominating the political scene.

Reporter, Male #2
The Party of Renaissance and Virtue, established in 2005, is betting on winning these elections to conduct political and social reforms. The party proposed a program based on Islamic principles, respecting human rights, and battling corruption.

Guest, Male #4 (Harith Abdul Ali, General Authority Member for Party of Renaissance and Virtue)
The party relies on Islamic laws. Second, it suggests alternatives to the traditional banks by replacing them with Islamic banks. Third, it demands linking responsibility with accountability and combating corruption and the corrupt.

Reporter, Male #2
Contrary to the Justice and Development Party and the Party of Renaissance, the two banned parties, al-Badil al-Hadari and Umma, believe that running in the elections will only contribute to the country's political absurdity, prolong the despotism, and suppress the movement for change.

Guest, Male #5 (Mohamed al-Marwani, Secretary-General of Umma Party)
The message of our election boycott is clear: we want to say nothing is going well in this country. We should reform, correct, and change the political and constitutional performance in order to build an era for a new Morocco, a democratic Morocco, and a Morocco for organizations.

Reporter, Male #2
The Al Adl wal Ihssane Movement says these elections are the same as before and will not change the political system. According to the Movement, change will not happen through elections with participation from political parties that are known for being loyal to the state, but only through radical reform that makes the people the master of authority. A series of protest rallies were staged across the Moroccan capital Rabat and other cities demanding an end to arbitrary political detention. The protestors also called for the trials of corrupt officials as well as more freedom and improved living conditions for the poor. Meanwhile, the February 20 Movement reiterated its decision to boycott the November 25 elections, which it described as an &quot;a blatant attempt&quot; aimed at derailing the people's demands for change.

Just like their Arab counterparts, Moroccans have taken to the street as a last resort. Thousands of Moroccans continued to stage protest rallies across the capital Rabat and other cities demanding freedom, democracy, and rights. The protestors reiterated their rejection to what they referred to as &quot;tyranny and power monopoly.&quot;

Guest, Male #2
The February 20 Movement hereby calls on the Moroccan people to boycott the failed elections, which are nothing but a political game as the monarchy institution continues to cling to power.

Reporter, Female #1
The boycott of the November 25 elections has inspired Moroccans to take the streets, in response to a call by the February 20 Movement. The movement described the elections as &quot;an attempt to derail the people's demands for change.&quot; They also accused the government of failing to provide guarantees of holding fair and transparent elections. The movement also accused certain political blocs of collaborating with the authority in a bid to elect a majority, whose primary loyalty is not to the people. They also rejected any political reforms that are short of recognizing the people's sovereignty. In addition, they stressed the importance of continuing to fight against tyranny. The demonstrators in Rabat raised slogans denouncing what they referred to as the &quot;deaf ear&quot; policies regarding the people's demands. The protestors are calling for the prosecution of corrupt officials, the expansion of freedom, the improvement of social services, as well as ending all forms of political detention. They also vowed to continue their protests until achieving social justice.

Guest, Male #3
We will not end our protests until all of our demands are achieved. They must release all political prisoners and end all forms of corruption and tyranny.

Supporters of Bahrain's February 14 Revolution called for a mass demonstration in the village of Krana to confirm their right to self-determination and to force the regime to meet the people's demands.

It seems the Manama government's policies, enacted in response to the popular mobilization in Bahrain, have deepened the division between the two sides and increased the government's isolation. An isolation made clear everyday as major political groups in the country are boycotting the parliamentary elections. These supplementary elections are set to be held in September to fill the seats of opposition ministers who resigned. After al-Wefaq Islamic Society, the National Democratic Action, al-Menbar, the Democratic National Rally announced their boycott of the elections, the Nationalist Democratic Rally confirmed its boycott of the elections as well. The society said the elections come amid difficult political and social conditions after the imposed state of emergency led to the arrest of hundreds and the dismissals of thousands of employees for their participation in peaceful demonstrations. For its part, the Bahrain Center for Human Rights expressed concern over the involvement of members of the ruling Khalifa family in the torture of protestors. The center received testimonies of detainees who reported about their torture by members of the ruling family. The Islamic Action Party called on the families of martyrs, detainees, and fired workers, to protest in front of the fact-finding committee in solidarity with all those oppressed and to demand the release of detainees. The hardship of many Bahrainis is not limited to physical torture and arrests; they are also at risk of losing their livelihood. Bahraini newspaper al-Wasat reported on the employees who were fired from a bank with no real reason justifying their termination. The reason for the dismissals is said to have been their unacceptable behavior and conduct. Meanwhile, night marches and peaceful demonstrations continue across different towns and villages, starting with the island of Sitra, and reaching Sar, Kura, and al-Diraz, southern al-Sahla, Ma'ameer, and the list goes on. Residents across all age groups took to the streets to confirm their commitment to their just demands of reform and change. In addition, they condemned the government's policies and demanded the release of the detainees and the downfall of the regime. And even though the protests have been peaceful, they have been met with violence by the security forces that have used a wide range of weapons and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. </media:text>

<media:text>We open at the Knesset, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in the plenum after having been summoned by the opposition to address the controversial boycott bill. This follows the signed request of 40 MKs, a legal move that mandates the premier's appearance at the Knesset. Netanyahu defended the bill and said that Kadima had also supported the legislation in its original form. These developments come as a coalition of human rights organizations today announced plans to join the Gush Shalom Peace Group, which was the first to the appeal the new law. The bill passed Monday might after a lengthy and contentions debate and now permits the prosecution of any individuals or group that calls for an economic, cultural, or academic boycott against Israel. </media:text>

        <media:text>Presenter, Female #1
The Israeli parliament, the Knesset, passed a law that imposes penalties on any Israeli company, individual, or group that announces to boycott products from the settlements in the occupied West Bank or boycotts any cultural or educational organization there.

Presenter, Male #1
The law was passed by a majority of 47 members with objection from 38 opponents. While the right-wing Israelis welcomed the law, its criticizers described it as undemocratic, saying that it is a mark of shame on the Knesset.

Presenter, Female #1
Our correspondent, Ilyas Karam reports on the details of the new Israeli law.

Reporter, Male #1
A new law has just been added to Israel's law record. Many say that this law belongs with a series of racist laws that discriminate against Arabs and undermines the basis of democracy. The law, which criminalizes boycotting, is the brainchild of the Israeli right-wing, supported by Benjamin Netanyahu's government. The law stipulates to punish any Israeli company, group, or individual that calls for and works to boycott products manufactured in settlements in the occupied West Bank, or to boycott educational and cultural organizations there.

Guest, Male #1 (Alex Miller, Yisrael Beiteinu Party)
The law defends the democracy that should not be turned into a weapon of prejudiced by some, the right-wing or left-wing. The law was in place to end the campaign of boycotts that caused major damages to residents in Judea and Samaria.

Reporter, Male #1
The law was passed despite the position of the Knesset's legal counsel, who said that the law has a constitutional defect. He said the law silences people and deprives them of their rights to protest and express opinions; especially the voices of peace groups, who see strengthening the economy in settlements as solidification for the occupation.

Guest, Female #1 (Einat Wilf, Knesset member from the Labor Party)
The law may infringe on the right to protest and express opinions against the inappropriate settlement.

Guest, Male #2 (Afou Agbaria, Knesset member from Democratic Front for Peace and Equality)
This move is to glorify the status quo on Palestinian land. It is a blow to all Arab and international efforts for Israel to make progress with the peace process.

Reporter, Male #1
Penalties to be imposed on the boycotters include deprivation of government tax cuts and aid, a ban on competing in biddings, in addition to lawsuits against individuals. The law came as anti-occupation groups called for boycotting products from the settlements, and progressive Israeli actors and artists refused to perform there. In addition, the Palestinian Authority stipulated in its contracts with Israeli companies not to be linked with the settlements. The first action of protest against the passing of the law was initiated by the Israeli Peace Now Movement, which built a page on Facebook encouraging boycotts. While one opinion says that the law fortifies Israeli democracy in face of Israel's enemies, another opinion says that it is a mark of shame on democracy. In between the two opinions, the certain fact is that Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition is using the relative majority in the Knesset to pass laws that glorify the occupation and fight peace groups calling for the end of it. <media:text>AND WHAT ABOUT THE MOOD IN VIETNAM? JUDGING BY THE CHATTER IN THE
BLOGOSPHERE, THE VIETNAMESE ARE JUST AS ANGRY. FROM HANOI, NGUYEN
QUI DUC (PRO: N-WIN KWEE DOUK) SAMPLES SOME OF THE BUZZ.

Nguyen Qui Duc Piece
Nguyen VO:
People have been excited: they’ve managed two anti-Chinese demonstrations in
two cities within two weekends. It’s really not that hard to get many Vietnamese
excited about resisting Chinese dominance. Since Day One of Vietnamese history, it
seems, Chinese armies have pushed down… and the Vietnamese have pushed back.
For example, two thousand years ago, the Trung Sisters fought a tyrannical Chinese
governor. National heroes, their images are still printed on postcards and posters.
Other wars followed. Their stories told in countless textbooks, historical dramas,
and TV shows… The last time Vietnam and China fought was a tough border war in
1979.

What’s going on now is a war of words particularly on the blogosphere, and on sites
such as Facebook: patriotic postings, messages about boycotting Chinese goods, like
this one by Nguyen Hau: Today at the supermarket, I was determined to put back a
Chinese item, even though there was nothing similar made in Vietnam or any other
country.

Even a government sanctioned newspaper—Thanh Nien, published by the
Alliance of Youth Groups, has this to say about Chinese goods: “Eliminating low-
price “weapons” made in China is something Vietnamese consumers must do right
now.”

But it was the hour-by-the-hour accounts on blogs and social sites of what was
happening at the protests that changed things. There were news and images of
police and plain clothes security people. Then pictures of protesters being arrested,
sent by cell phones. That’s when the anger against the Chinese seems to turn
towards the Vietnamese authorities.

This one from firebrand blogger Ho Lan Huong, whose house in Ho Chi Minh City
was surrounded by the police, preventing her from leaving her home on the day of
the protest:
Are you that desperate? Why be so afraid of patriotism? We’re prepared for the
homeland, and you’re trembling in fears?

A more direct question was found on boxit-vn—a blocked website started in protest
against Chinese bauxite mining in Vietnam: Under the current leadership, how many
more years before the Vietnamese people stop suffering? It’s a question even God
can’t answer. It torments the minds of so many who want freedom and democracy
for their country, only to pay for it with time in jail.

VN’s prime minister has stepped up his rhetoric against what’s called “Chinese
aggression.” Meanwhile, just a few days ago, the government has issued a new
drafting ordinance. The issue looks likely to dominate the blogosphere, especially as
the Vietnamese have been holding naval exercises in the dispute region.
