Are Boston Marathon Suspects 'Terrorists' Because They're Muslim?

Guardian columnist and constitutional lawyer Glenn Greenwald compares the widespread labeling of Boston Marathon bombing suspects Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev as "terrorists," to the reaction to other recent acts of mass violence such as the shootings in Newtown and Aurora last year. "There's no indication that [the Tsarnaevs] had any association of any kind with designated terrorist organizations -- any contact with those organizations, no indication that radical political or religious beliefs in any motivated them to do what they did," Greenwald says. "It's possible that that's the case, but it's possible it didn't. The rush to declare this terrorism I think reflects the reality that all 'terrorism' really means -- politically, culturally, and even legally -- is it's a special category of crime committed by Muslims that result in a whole deprivation of all kinds of rights and protections."

Now London Steels for Its Own Marathon

The Boston Marathon double bombing has rattled London, which is already in the middle of one massive public event -- the funeral of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher -- and is preparing for the city's own marathon on Sunday. "Prudent security reassessments" have been undertaken, and extra police and snipers assigned, according to authorities. There's no thought of canceling the marathon because "the best way to show solidarity with Boston" is not to be intimidated by terrorism, said a British sports official.

What's unclear at this point is whether it's a foreign or domestic threat," added McCaul, who told CNN that he was notified that someone was in custody late today. The blast was not a suicide attack, security services say a sports bag was left on the bus, which exploded. The last time a bomb hit the heart of Israel's commercial capital was in June 2006, when a Palestinian suicide bomber killed 11 people at a sandwich stand. Hamas voiced support for the bomb attack, but fell short of claiming responsibility. The blast may well derail ceasefire efforts and scupper US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's visit to the region. </media:text>

Not far from Afghanistan, two people were killed and nine others were injured after a bomb planted on a bicycle exploded in Balochistan Province. The bomb targeted Pakistani security forces. Rescue teams rushed to the scene to begin their operations, while security forces cordoned off the area and started an investigation to catch the culprits.

Reporter, Male #3
The scene of destroyed cars is now familiar, as some Pakistani cities have recently been witnessing explosions. The latest was a bomb blast that occurred Tuesday morning in the southwestern city of Quetta, killing at least two people and injuring dozens, including three Pakistani security personnel. The bomb was placed on a bicycle and detonated from a distance as police were patrolling a main road in Quetta, the capital of the turbulent Balochistan Province.

Reporter, Male #3
The bomb seemingly targeted a vehicle belonging to these forces. The blast also led to the destruction of a number of stores and houses in the area. According to media reports, the blast was followed by gunfire. No party has claimed responsibility for the blast. The oil and gas-rich Balochistan Province that is surrounded by Iran and Afghanistan is frequently subjected to armed attacks by insurgents that reside in the province. The province also faces sectarian violence and attacks launched by the extremist Taliban movement.</media:text>

Two people of Asian decent were killed and a third was wounded in terrorist acts that targeted civilians in the Bahraini capital al-Manama. This comes days after the government announced a ban on all forms of public gatherings, and opposition mobilizations for the sake of public safety.

Reporter, Female #1
Days after the Bahraini government announced a ban on all forms of public gatherings, and opposition mobilizations for the sake of public safety a rare attack occurred, mainly targeting civilians. Five bombs exploded killing two people and injuring another. The Bahraini Interior Ministry announced that the two people that were killed are Asian street cleaners. One of them was instantly killed after kicking an explosive package, setting it off. The other person died at the hospital he was taken to after another bomb exploded near a theater. The ministry added that the bombs were locally produced, and that the bombing occurred in the Qudaibiya and Adliya districts of Manama, describing these bombing as terrorist acts.

Guest, Female #2
He is a foreign worker who works in Adliya. He was a street cleaner with the municipality. He wakes up everyday at 4 am, and everyday he passes by the same place. He noticed a suspicious package with a timer. He lifted the package and it exploded.

Reporter, Female #1
The Bahraini authorities had earlier announced that a number of people were injured by home-made bombs. However, the form of today's attacks are considered unprecedented. Bahrain is witnessing sporadic protests led by Shiite government opponents. Shiite villages continuously witness confrontations between protesters and security forces.</media:text>

Days after the Bahraini government announced a ban on all forms of public gatherings and opposition mobilizations for the sake of public safety, a rare attack occurred, mainly targeting civilians. Five bombs exploded, killing two people and injuring another.

Reporter, Female #1
The Bahraini Interior Ministry announced that the two people that were killed are Asian street cleaners. One of them was instantly killed after kicking an explosive package, setting it off. The other person died at the hospital he was taken to after another bomb exploded near a theater. The ministry added that the bombs were locally produced, and that the bombing occurred in the Qudaibiya and Adliya districts of Manama, describing these bombing as terrorist acts.

Guest, Female #2
He is a foreign worker who works in Adliya. He was a street cleaner with the municipality. He wakes up every day at 4 am, and every day he passes by the same place. He noticed a suspicious package with a timer. He lifted the package and it exploded.

Reporter, Female #1
The Bahraini authorities had earlier announced that a number of people were injured by home-made bombs. However, the form of today's attacks were considered unprecedented. Bahrain is witnessing sporadic protests led by Shiite government opponents. Shiite villages continuously witness confrontations between protesters and security forces.</media:text>

The death toll of the bombings witnessed in several parts of Iraq reached 107; most of them were civilians. In addition, over 300 people were injured. Twenty-two attacks occurred in 14 cities; most of the attacks targeted civilian gatherings and security checkpoints.

Reporter, Male #2
Today was another bloody day in Iraq after over two years of calm. Hundreds were killed and wounded in a series of attacks that hit the Iraqi capital and northern cities. The 23 attacks that took place in 15 Iraqi cities were carried out with explosive belts and devices, booby-trapped cars, and a carload of gunmen. They mostly targeted the security and military centers of the police and army.

Reporter, Male #2
These attacks are considered the bloodiest since 110 people were killed in similar attacks in May of 2010. The area of al-Taji in northern Baghdad witnessed seven attacks, including the detonation of explosive belts and devices, and a booby-trapped car, causing the deaths and injury of dozens of people. The attacks also destroyed some homes and damaged many others.

Guest, Male #3
Fifteen minutes before we were supposed to go up, a bomb was detonated. Where is the government? Where are the police? Where is the security and stability? And then there's all this material damage. All of these homes were damaged. Here, four homes were destroyed, and about 15 homes were damaged.

Reporter, Male #2
The city of al-Sadr, east of Baghdad, also witnessed booby-trapped car attacks that caused several deaths and injuries. The attacks caused massive damage to a number of stores and homes.

Guest, Male #4
We were sitting by the door, and a booby-trapped car exploded. This area has families, children, young people, and elders.

Reporter, Male #2
An armed attack with automatic weapons and grenades targeted a military base in Dhuluiya, north of Baghdad, leading to the death of several soldiers. Security sources reported two booby-trapped cars exploded near a military checkpoint in the town of Khan Bani Saad, northeast of Baghdad, leading to dozens of deaths and injuries. And in the northern city of Kirkuk, a number of people died and others were injured when five booby-trapped cars exploded.

Reporter, Male #2
Diyala Province, northeast of Baghdad, witnessed explosions and armed attacks on checkpoints in different areas, leaving dozens of casualties. These attacks come on the eve of statements made by the leader of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq group, in which he called on Arab gunmen to head to Iraq to participate in bloody attacks during the holy month of Ramadan. This escalation also comes amid a political crisis, as pressure is being placed on Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki by his political opponents.</media:text>
