<media:text>In Israel, Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein notified the High Court of Justice that he will decide whether to indict Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman within one month. He has been considering whether to press criminal charges against Lieberman since April 2011, as only the attorney general can do in cases concerning government ministers or court justices suspected of criminal activity. Lieberman's alleged offenses include fraud, breach of trust, money laundering, and tampering with a witness. Weinstein's statement came in response to a petition filed by the Movement for Quality of Government in Israel, demanding that such a decision be made before the January 22 national elections.</media:text>

Israeli Prime Minister Avigdor Lieberman threatened to permanently dissolve the Palestinian Authority if President Mahmoud Abbas insists on going to the United Nations to obtain a non-member state status in the coming weeks.

Reporter, Male #1
The Palestinian leadership is planning on heading to the United Nations to gain status of a non-member state at the international organization. At that date approaches, Israel's threats and blackmail are escalating to deter the National Authority from its quest, and to abort the nation's dream.

Guest, Male #2
These threats are an attempt to dissuade the Palestinian side. The Palestinian decision taken by the Palestinian leadership, headed by our brother Abu Mazen, is to go to the United Nations this month. If Israel takes any steps against the Palestinian people and the Palestinian National Authority, we will respond with a series of procedures.

Reporter, Male #1
During a meeting with his nine-member cabinet, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu looked into his government's readiness to take a series of unilateral steps, and the possibility of adopting Judge Edmund Levy's report on legitimizing the settlements across the West Bank on the basis that they are not built on occupied lands, but in Israel. Up for discussion as well are Israel's economic agreements signed with the Palestinian Authority, and the cancellation of work permits for Palestinians in Israel.

Guest, Male #3
It aims to launch a relentless war against the Palestinian Authority and the leadership, as well as the Palestinian people. The most prominent events in the upcoming phase could be Israel's unilateral steps through which it is aiming to consecrate the reality of cantons in the West Bank, and to add most of them into Israel. It also wants to complete the process of separating the Gaza Strip from the rest of the Palestinian territory.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who has not lost a single opportunity to display his racism and insolence, threatened to dissolve the Palestinian Authority if President Mahmoud Abbas insists on going to the United Nations. Lieberman reiterated his demand for the quartet to drastically change the leadership, saying it as an obstacle to the advancement of the peace process. At the same time, he called on his county's ambassadors in 27 European nations to an urgent meeting at the end of the week in the Austrian capital, Vienna.

Reporter, Male #1
Unilateral steps, the legitimization of settlements, besieging the leadership and weakening its position: that is the policy of the Netanyahu government; a government that exploits every possible podium to market its extortion as if it were a commandment. Perhaps that government hasn't yet realized that the leadership and the people are in one trench against all the plots. Ali Dar Ali, Palestine TV, Ramallah.</media:text>

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz revealed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman warned the European Union's High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs, Catherine Ashton, of the consequences the National Authority will face if it insists on seeking an observer status for Palestine at the United Nations.

Presenter, Male #1
The Israeli newspaper reported that an official, described as a heavyweight in the Israeli government, stated that Netanyahu and Lieberman said that this move will be a step toward changing the rules of the game to push for unilateral Israeli procedures. The newspaper quoted Lieberman saying that Israel will completely sever all collaboration with President Mahmoud Abbas as it did with his predecessor, Yasser Arafat.

Presenter, Male #1
To talk more about this subject, we are joined over the phone by the President of the Democratic Front for Peace and Equality, Mr. Mohammed Barakeh, from the city of al-Nasira. Blessed holiday, Mr.Barakeh. How would you explain the statements of Lieberman and Netanyahu?

Guest, Male #2
Greetings to you, and to our Palestinian people. We hope to be able to celebrate this blessed holiday in a better environment, and to embark on the path of ending the occupation and establishing our state. Lieberman and Netanyahu's statements are not surprising at all. We don't think one can rely on these two officials to launch any new political process. It seems that their alliance under one list in the upcoming elections of the Knesset, which will be held on January 22nd, is a practically a declaration of war on any solution or peaceful settlement.

Guest, Male #2
Their list represents a policy of aggression. Lieberman and Netanyahu's discourse on what they call the dangers of accepting Palestine as an observer member state at the United Nations points that they panicking over this move since it changes the reference points of the negotiations.

Guest, Male #2
Palestinian land is not a disputed land, and Israel won't be able to claim it is willing to renounce this piece of land. It is recognized by the United Nations as an occupied country. This changes all the rules of the game, and this is what Netanyahu does not want.

Guest, Male #2
The other issue is they fear accepting Palestine as an observer state at the United Nations because it change its ability to maneuver in the framework of international institutions, such as the International Court of Justice, the Criminal Court, and others. I think this opposition means that Israel wants to continue to practice its crimes on the Palestinian people with impunity. I believe that these two officials are cause for concern for the Palestinian people.</media:text>

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the head of the Likud party, and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, the head of Yisrael Beitenu, announced they will run on a joint list in the upcoming election under the name Likud Beitenu.

Reporter, Female #2
A new surprise was revealed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he announced he will run in the next election with his foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman on one list. The Likud party, and the right-wing extremist Yisrael Beitenu party will unite on the ballot under the name Likud Beitenu.

Guest, Male #1 (Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister)
We are facing major challenges, and this is the time to unite the lines for the state of Israel. So we decided that Likud and Yisrael Beitenu will compete under one list in the upcoming elections.

Reporter, Female #2
The coalition comes as a result of secret negotiations between the two sides that would enable Lieberman to choose the cabinet as he wishes if Netanyahu heads the new government. The coalition that requires the approval of Likud primarily, comes after polls showed the power of Likud recently declined, and suggested that the Likud and Yisrael Beitenu parties would receive about 47 seats in the next Knesset.

Guest, Male #2 (Shalom Yerushalmi, Israeli Journalist)
Netanyahu was concerned and worried about the possibility that his party may not hold the majority in the upcoming election, which would not allow him to form the new government. Polls showed that the Labor party was able to minimize the gap between it and the Likud.

Reporter, Female #2
This is how Netanyahu was able to promote the right-wing forces in Israel, and to capture the attention of the Israeli political circle, as some are predicting this merger could unite poles such as Tzipi Livni and Ehud Olmert. On the other hand, the new coalition pointed to some of the policies the new government will implement if Netanyahu leads it.

Guest, Female #3 (Haneen Zoabi, Palestinian Member of the Knesset)
He doesn't only want control after the upcoming elections, he wants a government that is not subject to blackmail from outside the Likud bloc. He doesn't not want an unstable coalition, because Netanyahu wants to continue his right-wing policies without any threats from the coalition.

Reporter, Female #2
The coalition's most notable priority is to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, and its agenda lacks any mention of negotiations with the Palestinians. Lieberman is the biggest winner of this coalition, and Netanyahu has a good chance of remaining in the post of prime minister as he promotes the image of Israel as a state that is controlled by a government of war, not peace. <media:text>While making a previously unscheduled visit to an Iron Dome battery station near Ashkelon in the afternoon, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised local residents that Israel will fortify all homes within seven kilometers of Gaza, a larger area than the previous 4.5 kilometers, and stated that Israel did not initiate the current round of violence, but is prepared for a wider operation if needed. The prime minister said that he decided to accept the recommendation of the Defense and Home Front Ministries to widen the areas around Gaza that will receive full protection against rocket and mortar fire. The fortification will affect some 1,700 homes near the border.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu is expected to meet with visiting EU Foreign Minister Catherine Ashton, who held talks earlier today with Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, and spoke to reporters afterward about the situation in southern Israel.</media:text>

Today, the Rafah border crossing was partially reopened following several days of closure in observance of the Eid al-Fitr holiday. The Rafah crossing usually witnesses a high turnout of Palestinian travelers due to the frequent closures. The crossing was also closed early in the month following the recent attack on an Egyptian military post in Sinai.

In a related development, Palestinian official Raed Fattouh, who coordinates the flow of goods into Gaza, said the Kerem Abu Salem commercial crossing was also partially reopened today to allow the entry of aid, cooking gas, and other goods used in the agriculture, trade, and transportation sectors.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has escalated his war of words against Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Lieberman sent a letter to his counterparts at the Mideast Quartet, urging them to remove Abbas, whom he described as an obstacle to the peace process. The letter, which was released by the Israeli Haaretz newspaper, is part of a relentless campaign launched last year by Lieberman against Abbas in a bid to delegitimize him. For its part, the Palestinian Authority downplayed the significance of this latest extremist Israeli position. Our correspondent Mohammed al-Sayyed reports from Ramallah.

Reporter, Male #2
It's a new escalation in the Israeli war of incitement against Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman called on the Quartet to topple Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas through new elections in the Palestinian Authority.

Guest, Male #3 (Hani al-Masri, Writer and Political Analyst)
If the president doesn't respond, Israel is seriously considering his removal by replacing him with a loyal Palestinian leadership that's willing to meet Israeli demands and orders. However, this will be nearly impossible to achieve.

Reporter, Male #2
Lieberman's call, which reminds us of a similar position taken by former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon against the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, comes under the context of mounting Israeli pressures on the Palestinians in an attempt to sway them from heading to the UN to seek recognition of their state, especially since the policy adopted by Abbas has embarrassed Israel before the international community.

Guest, Male #4 (Dr. Wasel Abu Yousef, PLO Executive Committee Member)
They are trying to prevent the Palestinian leadership from heading to the UN, but they know that the Palestinian leadership has already made its decision to seek UN recognition of the State of Palestine. The PA wants to resume its efforts with the international community while holding this right-wing extremist government responsible for any political stalemate.

Reporter, Male #2
The unequivocal Palestinian position on the construction of settlements and the Judaization of Jerusalem has prompted the Israeli side to explore ways to get rid of President Abu Mazen. Israel has relentlessly sought to eliminate Palestinian leaderships through various means, and that includes the last move by Sharon to oust Yasser Arafat. And today, in an innovative way, Abu Mazen's turn has come, and is an attempt to drag the Palestinians into a new Israeli-engineered battle, which may further fuel their division.</media:text>

Iran has held Israel responsible for the suicide bombing that claimed the lives of five Israelis in Bulgaria. In a stormy session at the UN Security Council, Tehran and Tel Aviv exchanged blame over the attack.

Reporter, Male #1
This suicide bombing, which claimed the lives of five Israelis, took place a week ago in the Bulgarian city of Burgas. Israel quickly responded, and officially accused Iran and Hezbollah of being behind the attack. Days later, the US President's counterterrorism adviser visited Bulgaria and expressed concern over the terrorist activities of Iran and its Lebanese ally.

Reporter, Male #1
During a press conference with his American guest, the Bulgarian foreign minister refused to point the finger at any side, saying that the investigation is ongoing. However, both sides continued to exchange blame, but this time it was at the UN Security Council.

Guest, Male #2 (Haim Waxman, Israeli Deputy UN Ambassador)
Eighteen years ago, a bomb exploded in Argentina's Jewish center in Buenos Aires. Iran, in cooperation with Hezbollah, was responsible for this attack. Last week, a suicide bombing targeted Israeli tourists. This time Iran and Hezbollah were also responsible.

Reporter, Male #1
In direct response, Iran denied the accusation.

Guest, Male #3 (Mohammad Khazaee, Iranian Ambassador)
It's amazing that just a few minutes after the terrorist attack, Israel accused Iran. We have never and will not engage in such despicable acts. Such terrorist operations could only be planned and carried out by the same regime whose history is full of state terrorism operations and assassinations aimed at implicating others for narrow political gains.

Reporter, Male #1
In Bulgaria, the coroner who examined the remains of the person the authorities say is the suicide bomber has unraveled more details. The medical examiner said the bomber has light skin, but could be of Arab decent. The authorities said the suspect came from another European Union country.

Reporter, Male #1
However, the EU said it would rather wait until the investigation is complete. This is the message that was conveyed to the Israeli Foreign Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, who met with EU officials in Brussels. Lieberman called for blacklisting Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. For its part, Bulgaria hopes to collect enough evidence to complete its investigation and close the case, which seems to cast its shadow beyond the border of this small country that has never witnessed this type of incident before. Hours after the withdrawal of the Kadima party from the Israeli government, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman vowed to stay in the coalition, despite differences with the prime minster over proposals to change the draft law to include ultra-Orthodox Jews in the army. The disagreement over the draft law is what prompted the Kadima party to withdraw from the coalition, in a move that may lead to early parliamentary elections in Israel. Our correspondent, Sheruk Asa'ad, reports from occupied Jerusalem.

Reporter, Female #1
This was the quickest collapse of the largest coalition in the history of Israel. This comes after the Kadima party withdrew from the Netanyahu-led government without achieving its specific goals, notably the revival of the peace process with the Palestinians, and the expansion of the draft law mandating that ultra-Orthodox Jews serve in the Israeli military.

Guest, Male #2 (Khalil Shahin, Center for Political Studies)
This government has failed to launch a political process with the Palestinians. It also failed to enact a new draft law for ultra-Orthodox Jews.

Reporter, Female #1
Netanyahu is keeping one eye on the current government, and the other on early elections, by reaching out to ultra-Orthodox Jews who receive money under the pretext of enrolling in religious schools, in a bid to avoid being drafted in the army.

Reporter, Female #1
The religious groups represent a majority in Israel that Netanyahu depends on, similar to his dependence on the settlers who continue to build settlements in Jerusalem and the West Bank, which was the main reason for the collapse of negotiations.

Guest, Male #3 (Ahmad Rafiq Awad, Professor of Israeli Studies)
It's clear that the Likud party is bowing more and more to pressure from the Israeli right and far-right parties. Likud's main supporters come from the far-right, and the religious extremists.

Reporter, Female #1
These are the reasons that appear on the surface. But down below, there are a number of personal reasons behind the collapse of the coalition. Shaul Mofaz is eyeing the upcoming elections, and is seeking to secure a position by proposing secular ideology. Amid all this, Israeli officials seem to have no time to explore ways to resume the peace process with the Palestinians.

Reporter, Female #1
Israel is heading towards early elections, most likely in February. Netanyahu has a better chance to win, especially after pleasing and securing the support of right-wing and religious extremists, which comprise the majority of Israeli society. A sense of relief is dominating the popular and political scene in Egypt. This comes after Egypt decided to terminate a controversial gas deal with Israel. Under the terms of the deal, Egypt would supply Israel with nearly half of its gas consumption at below market prices. In Egypt, conflicting reports have emerged over the reason behind the termination. While the Egyptian Oil Ministry attributed the halt to the terrorist attacks on the gas pipeline, others said the decision was caused by a delinquent payment, in which an intermediary oil company owed Egypt USD 100 million. In the spring of 2008, Egypt agreed to export natural gas to the Hebrew state for two decades, as mandated by a deal signed in 2005. Tawfiq Ahmed reports from Cairo.

Amid the state of turmoil sweeping Egypt, overwhelming joy has dominated the popular and political scene. This comes after Egypt terminated a gas deal with Israel, a deal that has been widely rejected by the Egyptian street.

Guest, Male #2
This decision should have been made a long time ago. If people don't have enough gas for their homes, then why export it abroad?

Guest, Male #3
We have waited for this for a long time. This was a good decision.

Reporter, Male #1
Egyptian officials attributed the abrupt halt to a commercial rather than a political dispute. The East Mediterranean Gas Company, which exports gas to Israel, has failed to make monthly payments in the amount of USD 100 million to the General Petroleum Corporation and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company, rendering the deal null and void. The decision has raised several legal issues, which include the possibility of imposing sanctions on the Egyptian side due to a breach of contract.

Guest, Male #4 (Ali Hassan, Deputy Director General of the Middle East News Agency)
Egypt will not face any sanctions in case an international arbitration is launched. Egypt has every right to terminate this deal due to Israel's failure to meet its financial obligations toward Egypt.

Reporter, Male #1
Egypt started supplying Israel with natural gas in 2008, as mandated by a deal signed in 2005. The gas deal was widely rejected for several reasons. Among them is the price that Israel is paying for the gas, which is less than half its cost. The decision may further fuel the Egyptian-Israeli relationship that has been strained in post-revolution Egypt, which toppled Mubarak and his regime. However, the decision, though it was late, has brought comfort to the Egyptian scene regardless of its reason, be it commercial or political. Tawfiq Ahmed, Dubai TV, Cairo.

Presenter, Female #1
Israel, which imports nearly 40 percent of its gas needs from Egypt, said that termination of the gas deal was a business dispute, as confirmed by Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. Lieberman added the Egyptian decision was "not a good sign," but it would be a mistake to turn it into a diplomatic dispute. He also affirmed Israel's commitment to upholding the peace treaty with Egypt. The 20-year-old gas deal was signed in 2005 between Egypt and Israel, under the context of the peace treaty brokered between the two sides. The deal sparked fierce protests before the former regime's ouster. This prompted the current government to review the gas export contracts with Israel. Critics argued that gas is being sold to Israel at a price far below the international market value.</media:text>

American President Barack Obama warned of great risks if there's a military attack on Iran. He expressed his wish for a diplomatic solution to the crisis related to the Iranian nuclear program. In Iran, the deputy head of the Revolutionary Guards, General Hossein Salami, warned that his country's forces will attack any country from which the flames of war on Iran are launched.

Reporter, Female # 2
The message might have reached Washington and its allies that the Persian Gulf region is no longer open for them to come and go as they please to flex their muscles. And with the presence of Iran's growing force, it is no longer possible to disregard the country as it is ready for those tempted to attack it. And, it seems, it is for this reason that American President Barack Obama made statements ruling out that the Israeli occupation entity has decided to attack Iran's nuclear facilities. Obama expressed his desire to solve the crisis around Iran's nuclear program through diplomatic means.

Guest, Male # 1 (Barack Obama, US president)
I don't think that Israel has made a decision on what they need to do. I think they, like us, believe that Iran has to stand down on its nuclear weapons program. But, again, our goal is to solve this diplomatically.

Reporter, Female # 2
In an interview with the American channel NBC, Obama warned of the great risks that must be considered before militarily attacking Iran. He said he does not want more conflict in the oil-rich region; he considered any additional military activity to be problematic for the US. As for Tel Aviv, it is aware that it is weaker than a spider's web, lacking the most basic strategic military defense elements, as made clear in its latest wars on Gaza and Lebanon. So it has backpedalled on suggestions by some of its officials that the decision has been made to attack Iran. Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense chairman Shaul Mofaz described public statements by Israeli officials on the possibility of attacking Iran as "irresponsible." He confirmed the need to take objective decisions. This comes as Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman is on a trip to Washington to meet with his counterpart Hillary Clinton and members of the US Congress to discuss their stance on Iran. Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu warned against Israeli officials threatening to beat the drums of war in the confrontation with Iran. He said launching an attack on the country will be a catastrophe. This comes as deputy head of the Revolutionary Guards, General Hossein Salami, threatened that any piece of land used by the enemy to launch an operation against Iran will be the target of a revenge attack by the Iranian armed forces. On the sidelines of the ground maneuvers in southern Iran, Salami confirmed that any site from which the flames of war and aggression on the Islamic Republic are initiated will be subjected to a response by the Iranian forces. This warning leaves no room to doubt that war will not be limited to one area if Iran is attacked. And this explains the clear hesitation around the decision to launch war. </media:text>

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman criticized the European Union's recent report on the miserable situation of citizens inside the Green Line, saying it was infested with hypocrisy and stemmed from anti-Jewish sentiment and a refusal to acknowledge Israel as a Jewish state. Lieberman claimed in an interview with Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot that the Arabs in Israel enjoy freedoms that residents of Arab countries do not. He referred to Arabs being allowed to protest, without mentioning how these protests are dealt with. The Israeli foreign minister claimed that Arab university students enjoy better conditions than their Jewish counterparts. As for the Palestinian plight, Lieberman said it is impossible to resolve in the coming years. Joining us over the phone from occupied Jerusalem to discuss this subject is the chairman of the Arab Movement for Change Dr. Ahmad al-Tibi. Dr. Ahmad, welcome.

Guest, Male #2 (Dr. Ahmad al-Tibi, Chairman of the Arab Movement for Change)
Good evening.

Presenter, Male #1
Do Arab students enjoy better conditions than their Jewish counterparts, Dr. Ahmad, as Lieberman said?

Guest, Male #2
That was nonsense and a ridiculous statement. It's easy for "fascists" to tell lies in order to cover up the truth and mislead the general public. Arab students are suffering from inequality in all aspects. I'll give you an example. In the medical colleges in Tel Aviv and Be'er Sheva there's a minimum age requirement for admission. Only people over 21 years old can apply. This stipulation aims at preventing the Arabs from enrolling and being admitted into medical schools or programs when they graduate from high school at the age of 18 because they do not serve in the Israeli army. In addition to that, a majority of Jewish students have special student bodies, which are semi-public or public or official, that support them by giving them scholarships. Therefore, even as a joke, Lieberman's statement was tasteless and absurd and should not be taken seriously. But he was annoyed by this the European Union ambassadors' report to Israel, which was unprecedented because it speaks of inequality and discrimination against 20 percent of residents, the minority and the Arab citizens. This did not appeal to the Israeli foreign ministry and its chief, Avigdor Lieberman. Therefore, they tried to exert strong pressure on the European Union to not publish the report, through the ambassadors of Holland, Chechnya, and Czech.

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, voted to grant Palestine full membership. It's a new step toward winning international recognition for the state of Palestine. In response, Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas, said that acceptance of Palestine at UNESCO is a "victory for right, justice, and freedom." However, Israel said the decision harms the chances of resuming peace talks. The US said that the move doesn't serve the peace process, and deeply damages to UNESCO.

Ladies and gentlemen, the general conference voted unanimously to accept Palestine as a member of UNESCO.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman called for the launch of a wide-scale military operation to end Hamas authority in Gaza. Two Palestinian activists were killed in an Israeli raid in the southern Gaza Strip, in the latest breach of the Egyptian-sponsored truce signed between the Palestinian factions and Israel. Our BBC correspondent Shuhdi al-Kashef reports from Gaza.

This is one of the Israeli surveillance war planes patrolling the Gaza skies day and night.
Despite the new Egyptian-sponsored truce signed between the Palestinian factions and Israel, the latter's war planes have not left the skies of the Gaza Strip, and often fly at low altitudes. These planes, referred to in Gaza as "Zananah" due to their loud sounds particularly at night, are being used by Israel to target armed Palestinians in Gaza. This morning, one of these planes targeted two activists in Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip, killing both of them.

I believe that the situation is headed toward further escalation. However, the ball is in Israel's court; if they want escalation, we are ready to respond, but if they want calm, we are ready for calm.

Reporter, Male #1
The Egyptian efforts exerted over two full days succeeded in convincing Gaza and Israel to restore calm. However, the agreement didn't hold more than a few hours, with both sides blaming one another for violating the ceasefire.

Guest, Male #3 (Fawzi Barhum, Hamas Spokesman)
Hamas and the remaining Palestinian factions cooperated with the Egyptian efforts to end the aggression on the Gaza Strip. We always display the Zionist's violations before the world so it can take action against this continuous aggression and escalation.

Reporter, Male #1
The streets of Gaza appear to be normal despite the ongoing escalation, as most residents are gearing up for the Eid al-Adha holiday amid fear of intensified confrontations between the two sides.

Guest, Male #4
We don't want an escalation because it harms the Palestinian people, especially in Gaza.

Guest, Male #5
God wiling the situation will not escalate to war. People in the Gaza Strip don't wish to see a repeat of the incidents witnessed during the latest war on Gaza.

Reporter, Male #1
Many questions remain unanswered about which party is responsible for breaching the agreement for a cooling-off period signed by both sides. Why is that?

Guest, Male #6 (Mukhaymar Abu Sa'da, Professor of Political Science at Azhar University)
It's clear that Israel wants to escalate the security situation in the Gaza Strip, especially in light of the public pressure mounting on the Israeli government after the prisoner swap deal.

Reporter, Male #1
Despite the heated statements and exchanges of blame launched simultaneously by Israelis and Palestinians, many expect the Egyptian efforts to restore calm between the two sides, but not for long. Shuhdi al-Kashef, BBC, the Gaza Strip.</media:text>

<media:text>The Israeli foreign minister's recent threats against Turkey have caused alarm across the region. Avigdor Lieberman has said Tel Aviv may back the terrorist group PKK against Ankara. The recent deterioration in the relations between Turkey and Israel let to the right-wing Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman telling a newspaper that he had planned meetings ion Europe with PKK leaders to discuss ways of cooperating against Turkey. The PKK, which stands for the Kurdistan Workers' Party is a left-wing militant group listed by much of the international community as a terrorist organization and which engages in armed conflict against the Turkish state for autonomy in the country's southeast.

The final full court press is underway to persuade the Palestinians to change course ahead of the next week's UN meeting on the creation of a state of Palestine. A series of high-level diplomatic delegations are sweeping through Jerusalem and Ramallah this week. European Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton met today with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, and Defense Minister Ehud Barak. Israeli leaders have been forbidden from traveling in fear of arrest as the siege on Gaza has been tightened following the Freedom Flotilla.

Reporter, Female # 1
Israeli leaders are avoiding travel to Europe and a number of countries around the world. As part of the isolation campaign waged against Israel, Freedom Flotilla activists petitioned Spain to issue arrest warrants as a result of last year's bloody attack. The request includes Netanyahu, Barak, Liberman, Dan Meridor, Moshe Ya'alon, Benny Begin, and Israeli Navy commander General Eliezer. They are accused of committing crimes against humanity and the imprisonments, expulsion and torture of individuals. In Belgium, four Freedom Flotilla activists presented similar summons. In France, a criminal case was filed against Ehud Barak. It includes abduction accusations and use of violence claims. In Greece, flotilla activists presented a case against Barak, Ashkenazi and Marom. The accusations include the violation of international conventions and piracy. The request was also extended to Turkey. However, Israel's major fear is for the claims to reach England, where rules are more stringent, especially since Tel Aviv has already experienced attempted arrests that it avoided in the last minute. Former Defense Minister Amir Peretz escaped from London last month because police there intended to arrest him for war crimes. Tzipi Livni also escaped months ago. Last year, Member of the Knesset Avi Dichter intended to attend a summit in Madrid to look into peace in the Middle East. However, he cancelled his participation after the Spanish Ministry of Justice informed him that it cannot grant him immunity if he comes to Spain due to the warrant out for arrest. Among those who escaped, or were aided in escaping, or avoided travel in fear of arrest, is Defense Minister Ehud Barak, General Doron Almog, Netanyahu's Secretary Yohanan Locker, who accompanies the prime minister on all of his European travels. Recently, Israeli officials have resorted to falsifying their travels. IDF Spokesperson Avi Benyahu admitted to visiting London last March by using another name in fear of arrest over war crime charges against the Palestinians. </media:text>

<media:text>Any unilateral Palestinian step toward statehood may bring unpredictable consequences. So warned Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman during a visit to Croatia amid an ongoing mission that will also take him to Albania and Austria in his attempt to derail international support for the Palestinian bid for statehood. The Croatian foreign minister said that his nation's response will be issued following consultations with the European Union and the United States. Lieberman emphasized that the revival of direct talks with the Palestinians is the only way to break the deadlock. </media:text>

<media:text>Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said today that the biggest issue facing Israel is Iran, which has continued to advance its nuclear program, defying the international community. Liberman charged that the world has forgotten about the Iranian issue and its desire to achieve nuclear weapons. <media:text>We open with the arrival of European Union Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton to the region as part of efforts to revive peace talks with Israel and the Palestinians. This morning Baroness Ashton held a breakfast meeting with Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman in Jerusalem during which she offered to initiate a session of the Middle East Quartet to help re-launch negotiations. Lieberman bluntly informed the top European diplomat that he believes the chances for resuming talks is near zero at this point in light of recent views and actions by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, whom Lieberman said is far more interested in conflict than agreement. The foreign minister added that United Nation's recognition of Palestinian statehood in September would render the Oslo peace accords null and void as Israel would view such a unilateral declaration as a violation of all previous agreements signed by the two parties over the past two years. </media:text>
