<title>Democracy Now! Headlines: Julian Assange Loses Extradition Appeal</title>
        <link>http://news.linktv.org/videos/democracy-now-may-30-2012?start=93</link>
<description>In a divided decision, Britain's Supreme Court has upheld the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to Sweden over alleged sex crimes. Assange's attorney says the ruling sets an alarming precedent for judicial independence in Europe. With the global spotlight on the Assange case, WikiLeaks whistleblower Bradley Manning marks two years behind bars. Journalist Glenn Greenwald argues that Obama's secret &quot;kill list&quot; is &quot;the most radical power a government can seize. And, after the United States and 11 other countries formally expel Syrian diplomats following a massacre of more than 100 people in the village of Houla, does this incident mark a tipping point in favor of foreign military intervention? Plus headlines, and more.&lt;br /&gt;</description>

<media:text>Britain's Supreme Court has upheld the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to Sweden after a more than year-long legal fight. Swedish authorities want to question Assange over accusations of rape and sexual assault made by two women. He has been under house arrest in Britain since December 2010. Assange's lawyers had argued that the Swedish public prosecutor did not have the legal authority to issue the arrest warrant, but earlier today the British judges sided with Sweden in a 5-to-2 decision. Assange's supporters have voiced fears he will wind up in the hands of the United States should he be deported to Sweden. He has been given 14 days to leave Britain and return to Sweden.

        <media:text>Presenter, Female #1
The International Criminal Police Organization, Interpol, issued today an international arrest warrant demanding the arrest and handover of Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, who is currently in Turkey.

Presenter, Male #1
This warrant is viewed as the latest chapter in the political conflict between al-Hashemi and the head of the Iraqi government, Nouri al-Maliki.

Reporter, Male #2
These are the most recent images of Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. They were taken prior to December 17, 2011, before the al-Hashemi case started to appear. The Iraqi government believes that al-Hashemi and his bodyguards were involved in what it refers to as terrorist crimes. To prove these accusations against al-Hashemi, the government aired confessions it said were from the vice president's bodyguards. And after a ripple of events, al-Hashemi decided to leave Baghdad for Iraq's Kurdistan Region, where he settled in the capital Erbil under the protection of the president of the region, Massoud Barzani. On April 1st, he visited Qatar, which rejected the Iraqi government's request to hand him over to Baghdad. Qatar considered the request an infringement on diplomatic protocols, especially since al-Hashemi is still a government official and enjoys diplomatic immunity. Afterward, al-Hashemi visited Saudi Arabia, and his itinerary included Turkey, where it is speculated he has been staying for a month. From Turkey, al-Hashemi announced a few hours ago in a press statement that he decided to postpone his return to Erbil, where he resides, as advised by certain political leaders.

Reporter, Male #2
Meanwhile, as al-Hashemi is still in Turkey, the Central Criminal Court of Iraq ended the first session of the vice president's trial in absentia; he is facing 300 charges. The trial is scheduled to resume on May 10th, even though al-Hashemi reiterated several days ago he lacks trust in his country's judiciary. He confirmed a campaign against him is being waged by the head of the government, Nouri al-Maliki, who aims to politically purge him and remove the Sunni representation from Iraq's state institutions. It appears the case is escalating on the international front, as Interpol issued a Red Notice to arrest al-Hashemi, and significantly restrict his ability to travel across international borders. This raises many questions on the course of the conflict and its ramifications on Iraq.

Presenter, Female #1
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the defense team of Iraq's vice president said Interpol's arrest warrant for Tariq al-Hashemi is not a judicial verdict based on definitive rulings.

Presenter, Male #1
Attorney Muyyiad al-Ezzi added that al-Hashemi still enjoys rights and privileges as the vice president of Iraq.

Guest, Male #3 (Attorney Muyyiad al-Ezzi, Member of al-Hashemi's Defense Team)
First of all, we know that any warrant issued by Interpol, is usually issued based on judicial verdicts that are perceived as final rulings. But we believe that these warrants only have political dimensions. Mr. Hashemi is still the vice president of the republic, and he fully retains the legal and political rights of his political position in the state of Iraq.

Presenter, Male #1
For his part, a leader in al-Iraqiya bloc, Dr. Thafer al-Ani, said measures taken in the case of Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi were politically motivated, adding that witnesses were obviously coerced.

Presenter, Female #1
Al-Ani added the case requires two solutions, one judicial and one political.

Guest, Male #4 (Thafer al-Ani, Iraqiya Bloc Leader)
Al-Iraqiya, as a political party, along with other partners, believes that al-Hashemi's case should be solved within two frameworks: the judicial and the political. Within the political framework, it can be resolved by having the three leaders meet and determine the course and means to resolve this case; and judicially, by preventing the politicization of the judiciary and resisting the pressure it faces by the government.</media:text>

<media:text>The Iranian terror cell that accidentally detonated explosives in Bangkok were planning to attack Israeli diplomats. That's the word from Thai security officials who cited the similarity of the bombs used in New Delhi, Tbilisi, and Bangkok. Thai authorities are holding two men, a third is now in custody in Malaysia, and a fourth suspect has been named. Mohamed Khazei was remanded in a Bangkok court and has reportedly confessed to his involvement. The second is Saeid Moradi, whose leg was blown off in the blast. The third Iranian, identified as Masoud Sedaghatzadeh, was detained in Malaysia, where he fled after the blast. Thailand is now demanding his extradition. A Bangkok court has also issued an arrest warrant for an Iranian woman named Laila Rohani, who rented the house where the bomb exploded.</media:text>

Israeli leaders have been forbidden from traveling in fear of arrest as the siege on Gaza has been tightened following the Freedom Flotilla.

Reporter, Female # 1
Israeli leaders are avoiding travel to Europe and a number of countries around the world. As part of the isolation campaign waged against Israel, Freedom Flotilla activists petitioned Spain to issue arrest warrants as a result of last year's bloody attack. The request includes Netanyahu, Barak, Liberman, Dan Meridor, Moshe Ya'alon, Benny Begin, and Israeli Navy commander General Eliezer. They are accused of committing crimes against humanity and the imprisonments, expulsion and torture of individuals. In Belgium, four Freedom Flotilla activists presented similar summons. In France, a criminal case was filed against Ehud Barak. It includes abduction accusations and use of violence claims. In Greece, flotilla activists presented a case against Barak, Ashkenazi and Marom. The accusations include the violation of international conventions and piracy. The request was also extended to Turkey. However, Israel's major fear is for the claims to reach England, where rules are more stringent, especially since Tel Aviv has already experienced attempted arrests that it avoided in the last minute. Former Defense Minister Amir Peretz escaped from London last month because police there intended to arrest him for war crimes. Tzipi Livni also escaped months ago. Last year, Member of the Knesset Avi Dichter intended to attend a summit in Madrid to look into peace in the Middle East. However, he cancelled his participation after the Spanish Ministry of Justice informed him that it cannot grant him immunity if he comes to Spain due to the warrant out for arrest. Among those who escaped, or were aided in escaping, or avoided travel in fear of arrest, is Defense Minister Ehud Barak, General Doron Almog, Netanyahu's Secretary Yohanan Locker, who accompanies the prime minister on all of his European travels. Recently, Israeli officials have resorted to falsifying their travels. IDF Spokesperson Avi Benyahu admitted to visiting London last March by using another name in fear of arrest over war crime charges against the Palestinians. </media:text>

The state prosecutor today confirmed he has received the indictments and arrest warrants from the UN-backed special tribunal for Lebanon. He declined to name the four Hezbollah agents charge with orchestrating a massive bombing that killed Hariri and 22 others in 2005. Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir arrived in the Chinese capital Beijing. He begins a four-day visit during which he will meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao. Al-Bashir is seeking to reassure his most important economic partners that Chinese investments in his country will not be affected by southern Sudan's secession from the north in a few days. China called on al-Bashir to visit despite the International Criminal Court's warrant for his arrest.

Indifferent to international warnings and criticism, China opened its doors to the Sudanese president. In a strike against the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for al-Bashir, who is accused of war crimes, Beijing warmly welcomed him.

Beijing is pursuing quite ruthlessly its interest over the general wellbeing of the Sudanese people. It's shielding Bashir, who is facing very serious charges of genocide and war crimes at the International Criminal Courts by giving him this sort of royal treatment in Beijing. This is a wrong kind of signal.

China has repeatedly confirmed, however, it maintains the right to invite the head of a state with which it has diplomatic relations. In addition, China is not one of the parties of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. It has indicated that its foreign policies are built on non-intervention in others' internal affairs and that it attempts to maintain a neutral position in internal struggles.

Guest, Male # 3 (Liu Guijin, China's special envoy for African affairs)
China has created a kind of new type of engagement with Africa that is of quality mutual benefit instead of just putting pressures, and also China has never actually attached any political constraints to our development assistance.

Sudan is considered to be one of China's most important crude oil suppliers and Beijing fears an interruption to its supply if southern Sudan secedes from the north. The visit comes as the two sides have not yet resolved a way to manage the oil sector after the secession. Most of the oil is in the south, however most refineries and pipelines are located in the north.

Guest, Female # 2 (He Wenping, Expert on African affairs at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences)
Even if the south becomes independent, its relations with China will remain very solid. The south needs to continue the exploration of its oil sources.

And while China works on attracting the south, it maintains its important economic ties with Sudan. China is an important ally for al-Bashir, who is protected from international pressure by China's veto power at the UN Security Council. Khoulud Amer, BBC. </media:text>
