'Yes We Scan,' Chortles German Media Over Obama Snooping

Where has the love gone? Protesters yelled and a stern Angela Merkel scolded President Obama during his visit to Berlin for losing a sense of "proportion" in balancing security and snooping, including spying on German citizens. Obama isn't anyone's favorite any longer in Germany, where one newspaper has snidely changed his campaign slogan of "yes we can" to "yes we scan." <br />

G8 Protesters aren't laughing, though. They're back on the streets shaking it up with cops.<br />

<media:text>Regarding a negotiated solution over the Iranian nuclear program, there will likely be a military confrontation in 2013 with Iran-- this was the warning sounded by former US Ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk in an interview with CBS. He explained that Israel sees the turmoil around them from a much closer perspective than the US, making them "very nervous."

Despite the lack of progress so far, the IAEA will hold further talks with Iran aimed at clarifying concerns about its nuclear energy program. IAEA chief Yukiya Amano made the announcement at the member state gathering, stressing that the agency is committed to further dialogue with Iran. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton is scheduled to meet with Iran's chief nuclear negotiator as well. German Chancellor Angela Merkel also said that a political solution is still possible to the Iranian nuclear issue.</media:text>

An international warning of a full-fledged civil war has been issued for Syria. Syrians held demonstrations on a Friday titled "The children of Houla are the torches of victory," and a new massacre was committed in the countryside of al-Qusayr, targeting workers.

Reporter, Female #1
The international community has heightened its warning to a looming civil war in Syria. During a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Russian President Vladimir Putin said there are emerging elements of a civil war in Syria.

Guest, Male #2 (Vladimir Putin, Russian President)
Today, we are seeing emerging elements of civil war in Syria. It is extremely dangerous. Russia doesn't support any side of the conflict, and does not supply Damascus with weapons that could be used in a civil war.

Guest, Female #2 (Angela Merkel, German Chancellor)
We both made clear that we are pushing for a political solution, and that Annan's plan can be a starting point.

Reporter, Female #1
For his part, British Foreign Minister William Hague stressed the importance of implementing the Annan plan and reiterated his country's fear of a civil war in Syria. This came during talks held by Hague with the Syrian opposition and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Istanbul.

Guest, Male #3 William Hague, British Foreign Minister)
The United Nations secretary-general and I, as well as the Syrian opposition, believe that Syria is on the edge of an all-out civil war and a collapse into sectarian strife.

Reporter, Female #1
For her part, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, said a full-fledged conflict in Syria would put the entire region "in grave danger." She also called on the international community to support the Annan plan. In a statement read by her representative at the UN Human Rights Council's special session on Syria, Pillay said Syrian forces and militias accused of committing a massacre in Houla could face prosecution for crimes against humanity.

Reporter, Female #1
In response to a call by the opposition, Syrians held anti-regime demonstrations on a Friday titled "The children of Houla are the torches of victory." The demonstrations were held in honor of the children killed in the Houla massacre in Homs Province. The participants chanted anti-regime slogans.

Reporter, Female #1
On the other hand, Syrian state television broadcast scenes of al-Gha'eb, or the missing prayers, for the martyrs of al-Houla massacre. The prayers were held at the Great Umayyad Mosque in Damascus and other mosques in Aleppo and Latakia. On the ground, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 12 workers were killed on a bus while traveling across the countryside of al-Qusayr. The victims were shot to death after their hands were tied behind their backs. The Observatory called on the international observers to visit al-Qusayr and investigate the killings. In Homs, activists uploaded videos online showing neighborhoods being shelled as international observers toured the city.</media:text>

Merkel and Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan's president, hailed a "milestone" in relations on Wednesday in Berlin after signing a a partnership agreement that ensured support for Afghanistan's police and military following the expected pullout of the foreign coalition. The pledge came a day after Australia, which also has troops in the international alliance in Afghanistan, pledged to provide Afghan security forces with $300m over a three-year period after the withdrawal. The funding by countries involved in NATO's war against Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters aims to secure Afghanistan's future amid fears that unrest and turmoil will spread further after the foreign forces hand over full responsibility to the country's security forces.</media:text>

The former pastor's appointment means that former east Germans hold the country's two highest offices for the first time since reunification in 1990. Both Gauck and Chancellor Angela Merkel, herself the daughter of a pastor, were raised in the old German Democratic Republic. Gauck used his swearing-in speech to tell the Bundestag "more Europe" was the answer to the current economic crisis. The post of president is largely ceremonial and its holder is supposed to be a source of moral guidance. Gauck is widely respected in Germany for his past as a anti-Communist activist. He replaces Christian Wulff, who resigned over allegations of financial impropriety and suggestions that he granted political favours during his tenure as premier of Lower Saxony. </media:text>

German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived to Afghanistan on a surprise visit. Merkel met with German troops stationed at the country's northern region of Mazar-e-Sharif. Germany has the third largest army contingent of the NATO-led international forces. Berlin reduced its troops to 4,900 last February, with plans to completely withdraw by the end of 2014. Merkel's visit to Afghanistan comes as tension continues to rage between the government of Kabul and the Afghans on one side, and the US-led ISAF forces on the other over the Kandahar massacre, in which 16 Afghan villagers, all of them women and children, were killed by a US soldier. The incident prompted the Afghan government to hint that it may delay the signing of a strategic deal with Washington. Meanwhile, the Taliban movement vowed to seek revenge for the victims. Al-Seghair Salam has the details.

Reporter, Male #1
The rift between Washington and Kabul seems to be widening, especially amid the incidents of gunfire repeated from the air and the ground. Most of the incidents are usually committed by US troops working under the auspices of the International Security Assistance Force, ISAF, and most of the victims are usually Afghan civilians. In the latest incident, described as the "Kandahar Massacre," a US soldier, said to be "insane," opened fire on Afghan villagers, killing 16.

Guest, Female #2
The Americans killed my 2-year-old son. Was my child a member of the Taliban? Believe me, I have never met a 2-year-old Taliban fighter. The Americans are humiliating us.

Reporter, Male #1
The intensifying rage of the residents was echoed by the government of Kabul, which said the Kandahar incident may harm the US-Afghan strategic agreement, authorizing a long-term US troop presence in the country. Meanwhile, the Taliban vowed to seek revenge and escalate its retaliatory attacks on Americans. In a phone conversation with his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai, US President Barack Obama described the Kandahar incident as "shocking." A similar statement was issued by NATO.

Guest, Male #2 (Anders Fogh Rasmussen, NATO Secretary-General)
Obviously, incidents such as these undermine the population's trust in the Coalition forces. We are here to help the Afghan people, who must understand that they need our efforts in order to create a better future. But it is clear that burning the Quran and this type of attack on civilians undermines the trust they have in us.

Reporter, Male #1
The repercussions of that broken trust between the two sides was visible on the ground, especially as NATO troops continue to come under friendly fire by Afghan soldiers trained by international forces. This indicates that rebuilding trust is becoming a very difficult task to achieve.</media:text>
