<media:text>For the fourth consecutive day, Egyptians protesting the exoneration of key regime figures have settled into sit-ins. In the cities of Suez, Alexandria, and Arish, organized sit-ins are growing in size and formulating their demands. Meanwhile, former presidential candidates deemed revolutionary by some joined in the demonstrations. On Monday, the former hopefuls spoke to protesters in the iconic Tahrir Square, proposing the formation of a presidential council that would rival the military junta's elections. Political groups, organizations, and campaigns endorsed a march of millions scheduled Tuesday afternoon.</media:text>

<media:text>Protests have erupted across Egypt following the sentencing of ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and other former regime officials. On Saturday, an Egyptian court gave Mubarak and his former interior minister, Habib el-Adly, life in prison for failing to stop the killing of unarmed demonstrators during the protests that ended Mubarak’s nearly 30-year rule. However, the court dismissed corruption charges against Mubarak and his sons, Alaa and Gamal, on technical grounds. The court also acquitted six former police chiefs for their roles during the uprising when 840 protesters were killed and more than 6,000 injured. No one was found guilty of actually ordering the killing of protesters. The verdicts sparked demonstrations across the country, with tens of thousands rallying in Cairo’s Tahrir Square and in other cities.

The pursuit of corrupt officials and those who stole the country's wealth, as well as retribution for the martyrs' blood, were and remain the Egyptian people's most important demands since the January revolution. For this reason, everyone is eagerly waiting for this Saturday, the day to unveil the verdict in the "trial of the century," the trial of former President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons, in addition to his interior minister and senior aides. The following report takes us back to the night of February 11, 2011, the night when Mubarak stepped down, and the subsequent proceedings of his trial.

Reporter, Female #2
The people's will brought him down. It was the mere beginning of his journey from the regime's rule to the judiciary's rule. Aboard this helicopter, Hosni Mubarak and his family left the presidential palace on February 11, 2011, and headed to Sharm al-Sheikh as a final destination. That was Mubarak's wish.

Reporter, Female #2
However, the square wanted to punish Mubarak and his henchmen for the destruction and theft they were involved in, but most importantly, for the bloodshed they caused. As soon as the dust settled in the square on the Friday of Victory, the crowds returned on the following Fridays to call for retribution. This prompted Mubarak to appear on April 20, 2011, on al-Arabiya channel to deny all the embezzlement accusations he and his family faced. The Egyptian attorney-general quickly responded to this statement by announcing Mubarak and his two sons will be interrogated.

Reporter, Female #2
As the probe began, Mubarak faced a health crisis, which caused his transfer to Sharm al-Sheikh Hospital. He remained there until the attorney-general issued a decision on April 13th to imprison Mubarak for 15 days during the investigation. After the medical reports blocked a motion to move him to Tora Prison, Mubarak was transferred to the International Medical Center and was remanded in custody. On May 24th, 2011, the attorney-general decided to refer Mubarak, his two sons, and fugitive businessman Hussein al-Salim to the criminal court, on charges of profiteering, exploiting and abusing power, and killing revolutionaries. On August 3rd, Egyptians were in awe in the face of a scene that astonished the world.

Muhammad Hosni al-Sayed Mubarak.

Sir, I am present.

Guest, Male #1
You heard the accusations the public prosecution has charged you with. How do you respond?

Guest, Male #2
I completely deny all of these accusations.

Reporter, Female #2
Mubarak absolutely denied all the charges he faced in the first session that was presided over by Judge Ahmed Rifaat at the Police Academy. The session was aired live on television. The judge then decided to combine the trial of the killing of protestors that Mubarak is accused of, to al-Adly's case, and end the televised broadcast of the proceedings. The trial of the century continued, with some sessions unraveling the evidence, and others listening to the testimonies of the witnesses. Presiding judge Rifaat called on Field Marshal Tantawy, Lieutenant General Sami Anan, General Omar Suleiman, and Generals Mansour Essawy and Mahmoud Wagdy to testify in secret sessions.

Reporter, Female #2
On their scheduled sessions, Suleiman, Essawy and Wagdy gave their testimonies, while the session to hear Field Marshal Tantawy and Lieutenant General Anan was postponed for security reasons. On September 24, Field Marshal Tantawy gave his testimony. That session was followed by calls for a change of court judges, which led the trial to be suspended. After a legal marathon, the court of appeals issued a decision on December 7th, rejecting the calls to change court judges.

Reporter, Female #2
The sessions were resumed on December 28; the court heard the Defense Attorney's argument starting on January 3rd for 3 days, and ended by calling for applying the maximum penalty on the defendants. On January 9 and 10, civil plaintiffs' lawyers also demanded the harshest penalty. That was followed by the defense's arguments for an entire month. And after much commotion and the submission of testimonies, everyone is quietly waiting for a fair verdict.

June 2nd is the date set for the verdict and sentencing of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, his sons, and the former head of the Interior Ministry, Habib El-Adly. They are charged with killing protesters during the revolution. During Wednesday's court hearing, Mubarak confirmed he is in agreement with his defense attorney. El-Adly blamed outside forces for killing the protesters and claimed it to be a foreign conspiracy against Egypt. This statement was rejected by the families of the martyrs who gathered outside the court room. Tawfiq Ahmed reports from Cairo.

Reporter, Male #2
It is the case of killing protestors during the January 25th revolution, known as "the case of the century" in Egypt. The trial of former President Hosni Mubarak, his sons, the former head of the Interior Ministry, and six of his aides, which has lasted seven months, has come to an end. On June 2nd, the Egyptian people will hear the verdict that will be publicly announced. Some lawyers representing the families of the martyrs expected the people's retribution to take effect if justice is not served on that day.

Guest, Male #1 (Dr. Othman al-Hafanawi, Civil Rights Advocate)
The verdict is in the hands of the judge, and the blood of the martyrs is in the hands of the judge. If his verdict does not meet the people's demand for retribution, or fails to bring justice to the deceased, the injured and the martyred, then the people will take the law into their own hands and seek retribution, just like the Libyan people did by killing Muammar al-Gaddafi.

Reporter, Male #2
Outside the courthouse, Mubarak's supporters and opponents continued to gather, amid calm that wasn't devoid of the rage and anger of the families of the revolution's victims and injured.

Guest, Male #2
The verdict is taking too long, and it's not looking good. We are starting to look bad; we want an end to this so we can focus on our lives and help the country get back on track.

Guest, Male #3
As youth, we are waiting for the judiciary's decision, which, God willing, will issue a death sentence to these corrupt men, who spread injustice and corruption in the country.

Guest, Female #1
When will we see the fair verdict that we have all been waiting for? We want justice brought to our rulers by the Egyptian judiciary and God's law. We want our children who died to rest in peace, because they didn't die in vain.

Reporter, Male #2
Since the trial began in August of last year, and even before, thousands of demonstrations and protests witnessed in Egypt, after the revolution, have demanded retribution for the murderers of the revolutionaries. The bloody events that followed the revolution, especially the events of Maspiro, the Interior Ministry, and Port Said did not keep the Egyptian people away from following the trial with great interest. The case of trying the murderers of demonstrators during the Egyptian revolution has entered its final stage, with everyone holding their breath amid an anticipated unrest following the verdict, regardless of its outcome. But the Egyptian people are hopeful they will overcome that day, especially since they are on the verge of establishing a modern, democratic country. Tawfiq Ahmed, Dubai TV, Cairo.

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is being tried on charges of killing protestors during the popular uprising that toppled his rule. His defense lawyer said there is no evidence proving that his client gave orders to open fire on protestors. During the closing arguments of the defense today at the Cairo Criminal Court, his lawyer said Mubarak devoted his life to serving his nation and was a victim of hatred. Meanwhile, the court decided to suspend the session until tomorrow to complete the defense proceedings, which are expected to continue for a number of days.

Reporter, Female #1
The Cairo Criminal Court began hearing the defense's argument for deposed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. The defense has five days to prove the innocence of Mubarak, who is facing charges of corruption and incitement to kill protestors during the popular demonstrations that Egypt witnessed in January and February of 2011. Also being tried is former Egyptian Interior Minister Habib al-Adly, six of Mubarak's aides, and his two sons Alaa and Gamal. The public prosecution demanded the death penalty for the defendants, who deny all charges. The defense lawyer says Mubarak's trial is a political one.

Guest, Male #2 (Nadir Mohamed Hisham, Defense Lawyer)
The public prosecution's case can be considered to a large extent to be political, not criminal. The public prosecution said gathering evidence was very difficult since the investigations were of no help to them; means of research at all the other cases' disposal, such as detectives, were not available to them? So, such talk is false because many reports were issued but since they did not please the public prosecution's office they were not presented.

Reporter, Female #1
Outside the court, Mubarak's supporters gathered amid heightened security measures. They carried his picture and chanted slogans affirming his innocence.

Guest, Female #2
We are expecting good news. We rely on God first and foremost. It will be proven that the president is innocent and he didn't do anything wrong. One who fights the Israelis cannot hurt his people.

Reporter, Female #1
On the other hand, a number of Mubarak's opponents demonstrated, demanding he get the maximum penalty.

Guest, Male #3
See what he did to me? I will return here if he's declared innocent.

Reporter, Female #1
The public prosecution accuses Mubarak of being a tyrant who imposed a dictatorship during his thirty years of reign in Egypt and seeking to pass the presidency on to his youngest son Gamal. It also asserts that certain government institutions, including the Interior Ministry, deliberately avoided providing help to the investigators. The Cairo Criminal Court has given a full month to listen to the defense proceedings, which will end on February 16. Youla Zahar ad-Din, BBC.

<media:text>In Egypt, ousted President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons are back in court. Their trial resumes for the second time after a two month delay. The chief prosecutor said during the hearing that Mubarak devoted the last ten years of his three decades in power to ensure his son would succeed him. The former president, his sons Alaa and Gamal, as well as former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly faced charges ranging from corruption to the involvement in the deaths of hundreds of protestors in the uprising that unseated Mubarak last February. Mubarak could face the death penalty if found guilty.

At the Cairo Criminal Court, Chancellor Ahmed Rifaat has ordered that former President Hosni Mubarak's trial be merged with proceedings against his former interior minister, Habib el-Adly, into one case for the murder of protestors. The Chancellor also decided to end live television coverage of the court sessions. He adjourned the case until September 5. This decision was announced during a brief session following a long recess that lasted over an hour. The Cairo Criminal Court held its second session today for the trial of the former president and his two sons, Ala'a and Jamal, on charges of murder and power abuse. Chaos and altercations between lawyers erupted during the session. Elsewhere in Egypt, one person was killed and ten others detained during a predawn sweep operation by the Egyptian army and police in northern Sinai. The suspects are members of an Islamic group suspected of carrying out the attacks on the pipelines exporting gas to Israel and the attack on a police headquarters in the city of Arish at the end of last month.

<media:text>A court in Cairo has decided to put ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his ex-Interior Minister Habib al-Adly on trial together. The two are accused of ordering the killing of protestors during the revolution that finally toppled the Mubarak regime. The two sons of Mubarak will also be facing the court along with their father on the same charges. Earlier a judge had postponed the trial until at least August 3. The decision came as former Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif was being questioned by prosecutors for alleged fraud.</media:text>
