<media:text>The conflict in Syria has raged on for so long -- 18 months -- that for children there, war is now the stressful norm. For these children, political chants and the sounds of explosions are becoming a part of daily life, even as shortages in baby formula and vital medications mean surviving day to day has become a challenge in and of itself. But now there are concerns that an entire generation of children could be left with psychological scars. Al Jazeera's Sue Turton reports from the mountain town of Deir Sunbuul.</media:text>

In Syria, the Syrian Revolution's General Commission said 16 people were killed today by the gunfire of Assad's brigades in various areas, including a first lieutenant and two civilians who died under torture in Homs.

Reporter, Male #2
After Assad's brigades intentionally targeted civilians in various neighborhoods and areas of Homs, the Free Syrian Army attacked the military and security centers in Rastan with machine guns and rockets. The Syrian security forces suffered large human and material losses.

Reporter, Male #2
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 23 regime soldiers were killed and dozens were wounded. It noted that three armored troop carriers were destroyed; two of them were seized and the soldiers of the Assad brigades were imprisoned. In light of these developments, Assad's brigades launched retaliatory attacks using artilleries, killing and injuring dozens of civilians, and destroying houses with their occupants inside.

In Aleppo, the event is ongoing on the city's university campus. Hundreds of students demonstrated demanding the release of their schoolmates, who were detained by security forces on charges of participating in anti-Assad protests. However, the shabeha soon attacked the student protestors and assaulted them using batons and tear gas.

Reporter, Male #2
Meanwhile, a number of international observers arrived in villages in the countryside of Aleppo, and saw the tanks of Assad's brigades still deployed on the roads. In Hama, Assad's brigades and the shabeha stormed a number of villages in the countryside and carried out wide-scale arrest campaigns against the civilians amid heavy and arbitrary gunfire terrorizing the residents. As the UN observers' delegation arrived in Hama, hundreds of citizens waiting for them chanted slogans demanding freedom.

In Idlib, in the northern parts of the country, a number of residents were killed and injured by the regime's violent killing machine. There was also a massive crowd greeting the international observers. Clashes were reported between Assad's brigades and defectors from the regime army in al-Quriya, of Deir az-Zour Province. Meantime, Assad's brigades were deployed in neighborhoods of the capital Damascus and their forces pounded several villages in the countryside of the capital, leading to deaths. The heated developments on the ground did not prevent the demonstrators from taking to the streets of the Syrian cities and towns as usual, chanting anti-Assad slogans.</media:text>

<media:text>Campaign group Human Rights Watch has accused the Syrian government of committing war crimes even as it was negotiating details of a UN-brokered peace deal. The organization says government forces killed at least 95 civilians and destroyed hundreds of houses during a two-week offensive in the northern region of Idlib in late March and early April. In this video, an HRW researcher visits one of the towns said to be hit hardest by the violence, Taftanaz, and details evidence found there of summary executions carried out on civilians. "While diplomats argued over details of Annan's peace plan, Syrian tanks and helicopters attacked one town in Idlib after another," said Anna Neistat, associate director for program and emergencies at Human Rights Watch. "Everywhere we went, we saw burnt and destroyed houses, shops, and cars, and heard from people whose relatives were killed. It was as if the Syrian government forces used every minute before the ceasefire to cause harm."</media:text>

<media:text>Syrian forces have stormed a university in the town of Aleppo, killing at least four students and arresting dozens of others. The raid came shortly after the students held an anti-government protest. It’s the latest reported attack by government forces as the regime of Syrian President Basher al-Assad holds talks for a U.N.-brokered ceasefire. Human Rights Watch, meanwhile, is accusing the Syrian government of conducting a wave of killings just as it began negotiating with U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan on the terms of a truce over a month ago. In a new report, HRW says it documented the slayings of at least 95 people and the burning or destruction of hundreds of homes in the northern province of Idlib. Field researcher Ole Solvang said many of the victims were executed in their homes.

Ole Solvang: "Government forces surrounded [Taftanaz] and started shelling it with tank fire. They then moved into the city, burned and destroyed several hundred houses. In addition they committed numerous extrajudicial executions. In one of the places we visited we found 11 dead bodies. We were able to see marks from bullets on the walls where the people had been lined up and executed."

In Syria, dozens of people were killed by the gunfire of al-Assad's brigades. Most of the victims were killed in Idlib Province, where its town of Ariha is enduring heavy and indiscriminate shelling, similar to the shelling of Homs' neighborhoods and other towns in the Daraa province. Meanwhile, the head of the international observers' team said their mission is "not easy," and requires the coordination of all Syrian sides.

Five days have passed since the "cooling-off period" was announced. Meanwhile, the Syrian regime continues to violate the ceasefire, ignoring its commitment to the joint UN-Arab envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan. Even with the presence of international observers on the ground, al-Assad's brigades launched a new round of heavy shelling targeting Homs' neighborhoods, especially al-Bayada and al-Khalidiya where mortar shells fell on residential homes.

Reporter, Female #1
The situation was not much different in Homs' Jawbar and al-Sultaniya neighborhoods, which are witnessing heavy and indiscriminate shelling, amid a dire humanitarian crisis caused by the absence of food and medical supplies. This has led to additional problems, especially for the injured and the sick. A number of ceasefire violations were also reported in Idlib, where dozens of residents were killed and dozens of others were wounded. This comes as Syrian security forces continue to carry out fierce military operations across various villages in the eastern region of Jabal al-Zawiya. The army deployed dozens of armored vehicles and tanks, amid heavy mortar and artillery shelling. The operation was concentrated in the towns of Ariha, Saja, Bathabur, and Kifar Lata. The latter was stormed by al-Assad's brigades, deploying helicopters and opening heavy fire.

The Syrian Revolution's General Commission said that several people were executed by the shabiha in the city of Idlib. In Daraa, several residents were killed or injured due to the regime forces' artillery and rocket shelling that targeted Basr al-Harir in their attempt to take control of that village. In addition, the area of Lija in Daraa witnessed heavy gunfire and artillery shelling, amid sounds of powerful explosions. Lija, which is a steep rocky area, is home to a large number of defectors from the regime's army. In Hama, snipers were heavily deployed on school rooftops in the area of Qilaat al-Madiq. Armored vehicles were also entrenched in al-Qisour neighborhood, amid heavy gunfire.

Meanwhile, al-Assad's brigades stormed the town of Lahaya in the countryside of Hama, and carried out indiscriminate home raids and arrests. In the countryside of Damascus, particularly in Thaqba, the army continues to display a military presence and has set up barriers on the city's streets, as helicopters flew overhead in a blatant violation of the truce. Amid the fragile ceasefire, the international observers continued their mission in Syria by touring areas outside the capital Damascus. On their first day, the observers held intensive talks for hours at the Syrian Foreign Ministry's headquarters. The head of the international observers' team in Syria, Colonel Ahmed Himmiche, said their mission is "not easy."</media:text>

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 40 people were killed today across different Syrian cities. Most died in Homs and Idlib. Meanwhile, Joint UN-Arab League Special Envoy Kofi Annan told the Security Council no tangible progress has been achieved in regards to the implementation of the ceasefire. Annan has given the Syrian government a deadline of April 10 to implement his plan; diplomatic sources at the United Nations say Damascus agreed to the deadline.

Clashes continue in the besieged cities, with Idlib receiving the largest share. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, residents of the city's neighborhoods woke up to artillery fire that killed and injured many civilians and army defectors. According to the same source, regime forces burned homes and arrested dozens of people in the village of Hass, which witnessed a widescale military operation. Syrian forces also shelled the villages of Deir Sonbul and Frekya. Regime forces received their share of the losses in clashes in the town of Kherbet al-Joz in Jisr al-Shughur on the Turkish border.

As for the official Syrian media, they showed images attributed to Idlib, where life looks normal. They also showed videos of weapons, saying they were confiscated from groups described as "terrorist." As for Homs, the shelling was renewed for the 22nd consecutive day amid ongoing violent clashes between regime forces and armed defectors. The shelling led to the killing and injury of a number of civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. In Dara'a province, the scene was similar. Protests continue as different parts of the province are witnessing raids and arrest campaigns, which were carried out with the support of the army's armored vehicles, and led to burning and destroying some homes, mostly in the areas of Dael and Jassem, according to eyewitnesses. And while military operations continue in Dara'a, cries for help are growing louder as many are warning of a deteriorating humanitarian situation.

Yes, right now, the regime is adopting a scorched earth policy. Today, in the city of Ankhel, after the Free Syrian Army attacked two checkpoints, security forces and the shabeha stormed some neighborhoods in Ankhel, and even stormed bakeries. They also threw the dough to deprive the residents from having bread. So there is a systematic policy adopted by the regime, and it aims to starve the Syrian people.

According to estimates by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the year-long violence in Syria has led to the death of over 10,000 people.</media:text>

There is enough evidence to indict Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, as cited by UN Human Rights commissioner Navi Pillay. Pillay said the acts of violence committed by security forces must have received the approval or involved complicity at the highest level, and they could end by an order from al-Assad. The UN commissioner also accused Syrian forces of committing acts she described as "horrendous," such as opening fire at children and denying them medical treatment.

Meanwhile, the Syrian armed forces continued their military campaigns across several Syrian cities, killing 21 people. Most of the victims were killed in clashes between the regime's forces and army defectors. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said fierce clashes have been raging since yesterday in the countryside of Hama, killing four civilians, five defectors, and four regime soldiers in the area of Qalat al-Madiq. In addition, dozens of regime soldiers were injured in the clashes. Luai Ghabra has more details.

This is Syria, where today is not much different than yesterday, and where the sound of gunfire is echoing louder than the voices of protests. There also, the news of killing, shelling, and displacement is continuing to dominate the scene. This comes as the scene of armed confrontations between regime forces and army defectors is continuing to expand. In the countryside of Hama, military and security operations are raging amid fierce clashes that claimed several lives. This news came as reports confirmed the death of two regime soldiers in an attack on their military truck.

Reporter, Male #2
In the area of Qalat al-Madiq and surrounding villages, many homes were looted and set on fire amid heavy gunfire. In "Green Idlib" as it's known, the squares were turned into battlefields amid the sounds of powerful explosions and heavy gunfire. Today, military forces stormed several villages in the eastern countryside of Maarat al-Numan, killing several civilians.

Reporter, Male #2
Meanwhile, clashes erupted in the countryside of Damascus. Also, fierce confrontations broke out between regime forces and defected armed groups in Wadi Qak and Kafr Amer in the area of al-Zabadani. A powerful explosion was heard in the city of Harasta, and columns of smoke were seen raging near an army checkpoint. To the south of Damascus, fierce confrontations erupted near al-Diwar al-Jadid in the city of Dael in Dara'a province, injuring eight regime soldiers and destroying an armored troop carrier, as regime forces continue to impose a tight siege on several neighboring villages. Images and news, which are made available on opposition websites and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, seem to offer a painful glimpse of the daily Syrian life.</media:text>

Today, more lives were added to Syria's death toll, which the UN estimated at over 9,000. The Syrian army stormed the town of Qalat al-Madiq in the countryside of Hama. Meanwhile, military operations continued in Homs and Dara'a. Yesterday, more than 80 people were killed by the gunfire of the regime's forces. Most of the victims were killed in Idlib province. Luai Ghabra reports.

Reporter, Male #2
The rain in Homs couldn't wash away the remnants of the shelling or soothe the wounds of its residents. From Baba Amr to Bab Hood, and from al-Khalidya to al-Rastan, and others, death reports continue to emerge every day. Syrian army brigades are taking turns shelling these neighborhoods, firing dozens of shells every hour. As usual, the Syrian regime claims it was pursuing armed groups. And as usual, the number and names of the victims are not immediately made available.

Reporter, Male #2
Alongside civilians, the death toll includes soldiers killed in combat zones in battles raging between the regime's army and the Free Syrian Army. In the latest incident, three regime soldiers were killed and dozens of others were wounded in fierce clashes that erupted near the entrance of al-Rastan, following failed attempts by the armed forces to storm the city. In the countryside of Dara'a in the south, clashes broke out between Syrian regime forces and armed defected brigades in the town of Busr al-Harir. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said this comes after the army warned the residents it would storm the town unless they hand over army defectors.

After several attempts, Syrian military forces were able to storm the town of Qalat al-Madiq, backed by dozens of heavy machinery and armored vehicles, forcing army defectors to withdraw, following two weeks of seesaw battles. Shelling by the regime's forces inflicted massive damage to the ancient al-Madiq Castle.

Now that the Syrian regime has accepted Kofi Annan's plan, the Syrian opposition called on President Bashar al-Assad to immediately withdraw the tanks from the cities. This news comes after the opposition in Turkey signed an "oath" document, calling for drafting a new constitution that doesn't discriminate between Syrians, holding fair elections, and establishing multi-party rule. The organizers announced the formation of a committee to restructure the national council so it includes all opposition groups. The committee is expected to file a report on its findings within three weeks. However, the council's final statement was read as the Kurdish bloc withdrew.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's acceptance of a peace plan by the Joint UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, must be matched by "immediate actions".

Guest, Female #1 (Hillary Clinton, US Secretary of State)
The Joint Special Envoy Kofi Annan and the Syrian National Council agreed that the Assad regime's written acceptance of the initiative is a vital step. However, given Assad's history of over-promising and under-delivering makes me say that his commitment must be matched by actions. Tight reporting restrictions have limited the international media's access to Syria. However, Anita McNaught and her team managed to get into Idlib, and were there when the military assault began.</media:text>
