Dezember ihre Stimmen für die Ämter des Präsidenten und des Vizepräsidenten abgaben. Gleichzeitig fanden die Wahlen zum US-Kongress, elf Gouverneurswahlen und Wahlen von Parlamenten in zahlreichen Bundesstaaten sowie ein Status-Referendum in Puerto Rico statt.
Noch vor Auszählung der Ergebnisse in allen Bundesstaaten konnte der demokratische Amtsinhaber Barack Obama die Mehrheit der Wahlmänner-Stimmen auf sich vereinen und wurde wiedergewählt. Sein republikanischer Herausforderer Mitt Romney gestand seine Niederlage ein.
