Sociale medier er medier for social interaktion, hvilket vil sige at der er et socialt sammenspil online. Det er altså kommunikation der går begge veje. Dette gøres ved at bruge lette og stærkt tilgængelige kommunikative teknikker. Sociale medier kan også siges at være brugen af webbaserede og mobile teknologier, der gør kommunikation til en interaktiv dialog. Det kan være gennem en blog og kommentarer til disse. Det vil altså sige, at sociale medier er kommunikation mellem medie og bruger.
Andreas Kaplan og Michael Haenlein definerer sociale medier som ”en gruppe af internetbaserede applikationer, som er bygget på det ideologiske og teknologiske grundlag for web 2.0, hvilket muliggør skabelsen og udvekslingen af brugergeneret indhold”. En rød tråd, der går igen i alle definitioner af sociale medier, er en blanding af teknologi og social interaktion for indsamling af nyttige informationer for brugeren. Sociale medier skal være nemme at finde rundt i, og det skal også være nemt at skabe en dialog.
