An act of defiance or objection by an individual or group of people. Protests can take many forms: peaceful or violent, direct or indirect, large or small. Protests in the news are often political in nature, as groups of citizens voice their disagreement or dissatisfaction. Protests can also be individual gestures, such as a hunger strike or an act of self-immolation. Famous protests include the Boston Tea Party, the occupation of Tiananmen Square, Rosa Parks refusal to give up her seat, Ghandi's Salt March, and the Arab uprisings of 2011.
