Vārda brīvība ir vienas no pamattiesībām, ko paredz Vispārējā cilvēktiesību deklarācija. Plašākā nozīmē ar to saprot tiesības brīvi un publiski jebkādā veidā paust viedokli vai ierosināt darbību, šo tiesību izmantošanas procesā tiekot aizsargātam no jebkādiem centieniem šī viedokļa paušanu nepieļaut. Vārda brīvība sevī iekļauj cenzūras aizliegumu.
Vispārējās cilvēktiesību deklarācijas 29. pantā minēts, ka, realizējot savas tiesības paust viedokli, cilvēkam jāpakļaujas likumā noteiktiem ierobežojumiem, kuru nolūks ir nodrošināt citu personu tiesības un brīvības, kā arī morāli, sabiedrisko kārtību un vispārējo labklājību, turklāt šo tiesību un brīvību izmantošana nedrīkst būt pretrunā ar ANO mērķiem un principiem. Starptautiskajās tiesībās vārda brīvības ierobežojumiem jāatbilst trim punktiem: 1 šiem ierobežojumiem jābūt paredzētiem pēc likuma, 2 ierobežojumu mērķim jābūt likumīgam, 3 ierobežojumiem jābūt nepieciešamiem šī mērķa sasniegšanai. Par likumīgiem mērķiem uzskata, piemēram, citu personu tiesību un reputācijas aizsargāšanu, nacionālās drošības, sabiedriskās kārtības, veselības un morāles aizsargāšanu.
ANO cilvēktiesību sistēmā vārda brīvību nostiprina Starptautiskā pakta par pilsoniskajām un politiskajām tiesībām 19. pants, Eiropas Padomes sistēmā — Eiropas Cilvēktiesību konvencijas 10. pants, Latvijā — Satversmes 100. pants.
